Geraud Staton, Executive Director The Helius Foundation strives to level the playing field for struggling business owners, particularly women and minority entrepreneurs. It is the Helius Foundation s first full year in operation and I couldn t be more proud of the work that we have done in that time. We have affected people s lives for the better, have made great partnerships with other organizations, and have put ourselves in a position where we can reach hundreds more people in the coming year! The Helius Foundation strives to level the playing field for struggling business owners, particularly women and minority entrepreneurs. Our clients are given free coaching and mentoring in the areas of business development, employee management, financial literacy, and networking support. This year we are working intimately with twenty entrepreneurs to move their side hustle into something that will support their families. You can meet a few of our clients on the following pages. The Helius Foundation has also held five entrepreneur workshops for the community. These workshops were held at Duke University s Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative and at the newly opened ReCity space in downtown Durham. These events hosted some amazing speakers, including Henry McKoy, Brent Droege, and Mildred Mama Dips Council. Thanks to these many community leaders we were able to reach necessity-driven entrepreneurs, students, seasoned business people, and those who were at the beginnings of their entrepreneurial journey. And, as if we weren t busy enough, we have made some great partnerships with local organizations, many of whom share a similar passion for allowing Durham citizens to become all that they can, despite the struggles that can often befall them. The full list can be found in our Highlights section, but include Bull City Forward, the Rotary Club of Durham, ReCity, the Community Empowerment Fund, and many others. This year has been uplifting, and I have been honored to assist so many amazing entrepreneurs and to work with so many wonderful partners. And I look forward to a 2017 that is even more illuminating.

Client Story Connell, Connell s Best A few years ago, he lived through a terrible accident that left him a quadriplegic and unable to speak. With little hope, Connell used the power of prayer to help rejuvenate his body, learning to speak a little at a time, while learning to use his limbs again. Prayer helped heal his body. It was baking that helped heal his spirit. Now, Helius is helping him to sell his cookies and candies so that he can spread hope and joy, two things that Connell believes the world could use more of.

Client Story Beatrice, Absolute Joy Beatrice is a North Carolina native and mother of four. She has worked a number of part-time jobs as well as serving on various advisory and executive boards. She has worked numerous jobs and that experience has given her the skills to start Absolute Joy, an event planning company in the Triangle. She has organized many events, and now Helius is helping her to expand her business and reach for higher quality clients.

Client Story Philip and Tyrik, Your Future Philip and Tyrik started Your Future an independent record label, but later put their focus on clothing because of the impact they could have around the inner city. Your Future promotes creativity and gets people thinking about their future. Helius is expanding their connections, and helping them to continue their outreach efforts, making Your Future a company known for giving back and positivity through their designs and volunteer work.

Our Social Innovation Fellows Why did you become involved with the Helius Foundation? To poke the Duke bubble, and combine entrepreneurship with quality community services. To meet and learn from thoughtful, bold local innovators, gain practical professional experience while transferring my past experience into something valuable for my community partners.
