Daily Rate of Gain Contest SAVE THE DATE 5/9/15 (first weigh in & must be present) This event is open to all enrolled junior fair participants and is a contest to recognize the young person with the best rate of daily gain with their market goat projects. Participants are encouraged to feed their animals to have a high rate of daily gain, to use feed efficiently and produce a good quality meat product. The daily rate of gain will be calculated by two weigh ins May 9 and July 25 with awards presented at the born & raised show on July 26. 1. Daily rate of gain will be calculated from two weigh ins: May 9th and July 25th. 2. All animals must be weighed in at the clinic on May 9, 2015, at the Butler County Fairgrounds. No exceptions. Goat must have a USDA Scrapie tag. A Butler County Fair ear tag will be placed in the goat s ear at this time for identification. 3. The same animal that was weighed on May 9th must be weighed in again on July 25th to complete the rate of gain contest. 4. An award for the top daily rate of gain will be given. 5. The top ten animals with the highest rate of daily gain will then be judged to determine the best overall meat carcass. This will take place after the Born & Raised Show. The program will begin on Saturday, March 21 st and run through July Harvest the Garden! For more information/flyer and application, click here! VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES 4-H CARTEENS Youth and Adult Volunteers NEEDED! Do you have to complete community service learning hours to meet your high school graduation requirements? Are you interested in assisting your peers with a great cause? Are you interested in developing life skills like teamwork, self-responsibility, leadership, and cooperation? Are you looking for scholarships to assist with college expenses? In 2014 4-H CARTEENS provided $7,200 in scholarships to nine 4-H CARTEENS members that are currently attending college this fall.

Then you might be interested in becoming a 4-H CARTEENS volunteer! Both teens and adults are needed. Teens that serve as teachers must be 15.5 to 19 years old and must have a driving permit for at least 60 days. The primary purpose of the 4-H CARTEENS program is to educate youth to have safe driving habits which will help to decrease the number of repeat juvenile traffic offenders. This is a great way to strengthen your life skills, make new friends, make a difference on the roads, learn the importance of volunteerism, and apply for scholarship opportunities. This will also look good on your annual report form and any job application. 4-H youth interested in becoming a volunteer are required to attend a CARTEENS program, with a parent. At the end of the program, both the 4-H youth and parent get to make the decision about the volunteer opportunity with CARTEENS. 4-H youth that sign up to volunteer with CARTEENS must commit to teaching at an assigned station twice a month. The program begins at 6:15 pm every Wednesday evening during the school year and bi-weekly during the summer. The April 2015 programs are scheduled for 8 th, 15 th, and 29 th. However, I would encourage you arrive by 5:45 pm in order to meet some of the current 4-H CARTEENS volunteers. Contact Kevin Harris via email at harris.2184@osu.edu or by phone at (513) 785-6650 for more information.
