Scholarship Descriptions The James Caldwell High School Scholarship Fund was founded in the early 1960 s as a non-profit organization. The fund administers monies received from direct contribution, fund-raising (such as annual mail campaigns), and memorial gifts. The Scholarship Fund Committee is made up of an Executive Board and representatives. All members are volunteers. Meetings are generally held on the last Monday of each month. In recent years the Fund has become multifaceted in the types of scholarships awarded. Several JCHS Scholarships of $1,500 are awarded to students with a grade average of 83 who are in need of financial assistance to attend an institution of higher education. The institution may be a two or four year college or trade school. The David Gould Memorial Scholarship is awarded in memory of a James Caldwell graduate who was killed in the Pan Am crash of 1988. It is based on an essay about leadership ability. Although the recipient must rank in the top 25% of the class, there is no financial need requirement. Details are available in the Guidance Office. The Jennifer Nesbitt Scholarship is a monetary award in memory of a 1990 JCHS graduate who died in 1993 in an accident while attending college. This scholarship is open to females who rank in the top half of the class and who are on the track and/or cross country teams. Details are available in the Guidance Office. The George Berisso Memorial Scholarship is a monetary award given in memory of the JCHS Science teacher who died in 1996 while volunteering on a Boy Scout mission. Applicants must be in the top 50% of the class and have the intent of majoring in science in college. An essay is required. Application details are available in the Guidance Office. The Allen Engel Memorial Scholarship is a tribute to a long-time JCHS English teacher. An essay is required. Application details are available in the Guidance Office. The Isabel Lynch/Wells Fargo Teacher Scholarship is awarded to a student with an average grade of 83 or higher and is not financial-need based. The student must be planning to major in education in college. A motivational essay is required. The John Lynch/Wells Fargo Scholarship for Health Sciences is awarded to a student with an average grade of 83 or higher and is not financial-need based. The student must be planning to enter into an area of the medical field, and attend college or technical school. A motivational essay is required. 3

Scholarship Descriptions (continued) The Jennifer Tino World Trade Center Scholarship is a monetary award given in the memory of Jennifer Tino who was a 1990 graduate of JCHS and a victim of the September 11 th World Trade Center terrorist attack. The Tino family has established this fund to commemorate her accomplishments in the field of Finance. The recipient of this award should demonstrate academic excellence along with participation in extracurricular activities and be planning a career in Business or Finance. Details are available in the Guidance Office. The Amanda McDonald Heart of Gold Scholarship of $5,000 ($1,250 for each of four years) is awarded in memory of Amanda McDonald, a 2003 JCHS graduate who died in an accident while attending college. Amanda was a very caring and generous person who helped those in need. This scholarship is available to students whose educational direction will support their pursuit of a career that will help to give back to the community. An essay is required and details are available in the Guidance Office. The Elmo E. Crump Memorial Engineering Scholarship is a scholarship awarded in memory of Elmo E. Crump. This scholarship is not financial need based. The recipient must intend to pursue a degree in Engineering. A separate application page is required (available in the Guidance Office) and a motivational essay is required. The Robert Hopf Memorial Scholarship is a scholarship awarded in memory of Robert Hopf. This is a need-based scholarship and is awarded to a working high school student intending to major in math or science. An essay detailing work history and college motivation is required. The Slattery Marketing LLC Scholarship is awarded to a deserving graduating senior that has demonstrated leadership skills and participated in extracurricular activities. The recipient must be in the top 50% of the class and planning to attend a college, vocational or business school. This is a need-based scholarship. The William Payne Memorial Scholarship is a scholarship awarded in memory of William E. Payne, the longest serving elected official in the Township of West Caldwell, serving as Councilman for 27 years. He was an activist in state and community affairs for social good throughout his lifetime. This is an annual award of $1,500 to a graduating senior from James Caldwell High School who has been admitted to a four year college and will major in any of the following: Political Science, Government Affairs, Social Services, Journalism, Natural Resources or Conservation. The award is not based on financial need and should be applied to tuition, books/supplies. The applicant should be a well rounded student who has participated in student and community affairs with a GPA of 85 or better and in the top 30% of the class. A motivational essay is required (Leadership, Community Service, Citizenship or Volunteerism). The Elin Johnston Memorial Scholarship is a scholarship awarded in memory of Elin Johnston, a long-time JCHS English teacher. The scholarship is awarded to a student with a grade average of 83 or higher who plan to attend an institution of higher education. The institution may be a two or four year college or trade school.
