CONTENTS ON THE COVER While a celebratory atmosphere prevailed at 'Iolani Palace during the August 12, 1898, ceremony marking the United States annexation of Hawai'i, the scene was quite different at nearby Washington Place, where family, including Princess Ka'iulani, and loyalist supporters gathered with the deposed Queen Lili'uokalani, who had declined to attend the ceremony. The somber mood of the day is captured in this photograph by Frank Davey. A prolific photographer, Davey had worked in London, Paris, and California before coming to Hawai'i in 1897. He remained for three years, returning to California in 1901. Photo from Hawaiian Historical Society collection. 1998 Hawaiian Historical Society. Printed in the United States of America.
