DIRECTORY Rotary International District 6450 The Birthplace of Rotary Jim Czerwionka District Governor 2009-2010

Cover Page Explanations The tone for the 2009-2010 Rotary Year is captured by the metaphor of the Rotary Team Train and by the Rotary Theme for this year. Rotary Team Train The Rotary Team Train dynamically depicts Rotary International s recommended structure for Clubs and Districts. For the 70 years prior to 2004, the recommended structure had been the Four Avenues of Service. The new structure continues to deliver Service based on Fellowship. However Membership and Foundation are the two engines that will power Rotary into the future, and it is Public Relations that fuels those two engines. The purpose of the new 2004 structure is to strengthen Rotary for the future. Teamwork is what it will take to make our Rotary Trains run. 2009-2010 Rotary Logo and Theme Whether Rotary will thrive, or whether it will falter; whether our service will mean much to many, or little to few; whether Rotary is known with respect, or seen as a relic of days gone by: all this is up to you. THE FUTURE OF ROTARY IS IN YOUR HANDS. RI John Kenny, San Diego, January 2009

Each one of us is standing on the shoulders of generations of Rotarians past, and it is our responsibility to determine Rotary s future. Everything begins and ends with our clubs. Our clubs can and do work together; they work through their own districts, in cooperation with other clubs and districts, and with the support of our Foundation. But at the end of the day, everything that we accomplish is done through the strength of our clubs. John Kenney, Rotary International, 2009-2010

District Simplified Grants can be matched by the District at a rate of $0.50 per club dollar up to $2000 for a single club or $3000 for two or more clubs. Foundation Matching Grants can be for $5000 to $150,000 (note above $25,000 the Grants are approved on a competitive basis). Foundation Matching Grants are matched by the Rotary Foundation at the rate of $0.50 per club dollar. Clubs can also get a District Designated Fund (DDF) match at dollar per club dollar up to $2000 for a single club, $4000 for two clubs, or $6000 for three or more clubs. DDF funds are then matched by the Rotary Foundation dollar per dollar. Background information and applications can be found on the District website (www.rotary6450.org). Go to the site and click on The Foundation and then select District Grants. You will have to go to a District Foundation Selection Committee meeting to present your project. Dates of these meetings are also posted on the website. Rick Thiernau (Donna) - Homewood Res: 708-367-0598 dgrick@thiernaufinancial.com Bus: 708-798-5828

25 Foundation Team II. FOUNDATION WAYS OF GIVING This is our Foundation and there are many ways for individuals and clubs to make contributions. The three most common are Annual Giving, Polio Plus, and Permanent Fund. Annual Giving Each club sets its own goal for member contributions to the Foundation. The District s Goal is that Every District Rotarian makes a Contribution! Rotary would like to see each Rotarian contribute at least $100 annually, the Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) Program See Club and Individual Recognition possibilities below. Public Relations Team 26 Public Relations Team Leader: Pat Merryweather (George) - Naperville Cell: 630-202-5579 rotarysolarpat@aol.com Public Relations (PR) help Clubs and the District promote Rotary and its projects both within and outside of our Rotary Clubs. The goals of promoting Rotary are 1) to increase awareness of Rotary s value and benefits for the purpose of increasing and retaining membership; 2) to raise awareness of Rotary s initiatives locally and globally; and 3) to increase participation and support for Rotary projects and fundraisers. The PR committee will work to support Clubs through educational opportunities and sharing of successful approaches to public relations. Initiatives will focus on PR with fellow Rotarians within the Clubs and on PR with the public in our local communities, on those within the District and on those outside of the District. Practical steps and approaches will be shared at the September seminar which has a target audience of all Clubs and District leaders, but particularly those who have special responsibility for PR in each Quadrant, in each Assistant Governor Area, and within each club. The District PR Team includes approximately 90 Rotarians led by District PR chairs and an Assistant Governor Quadrant Leader. Major Dates March 13 and 14 Elects Training Seminar April 4 District Assembly September 19 The District Seminar on Public Relations This event will be led by public relations and event promotion professionals. It is free to the public relations leaders in each club, in each AG Area, and in each Quadrant. Attendance is strongly encouraged as information will be provided on: - Public Relations grant opportunities - Templates for media releases - Panel discussion on successful public relations initiatives for Rotary awareness, projects, and fundraisers - Information and demonstrations of new communications technology and advanced social networking resources Grants Rotary International is making grants available to Districts only during the 2009-2010 Rotary year. The maximum amount of the grant that a District can receive is $10,000. Rotary International encourages Districts and Clubs to incorporate some of the Rotary Humanity in Motion public relations material in their plan as well as other public relations materials unique to their Clubs. District Clubs will also have grant opportunities available to them for promotion and public relations to spread the word about Rotary through grants and local projects. Ideally the AG Quadrant Leaders and AGs in coordination with their Rotary Clubs should come up with unified public relations approaches if they wish to pursue common goals and messages. 2009-2010 District 6450 and Club Goals - Every Club have a Public Relations Chair or dedicated person to public relations - Every Club have public relations goals for inside and outside of Club - Each Club is encouraged to have the PR Chair or designee at September 19 PR Seminar - Every Club reach out to their local media to promote Rotary International, Rotary Club projects, or Rotary Club fundraiser (one of the components for Club ial Citation) - Assistant Governors and District Quadrant Leaders work with the local Clubs to encourage use of the District PR grants - Utilize the newsletter and web for communications with members and encourage usage of modern technology to reach young and prospective members through YouTube, Facebook, and other social marketing strategies

The STL participates as a member of the District Management Team and helps design programs about participation in service areas for District Assembly, PETS, Grants Seminar and District Conference. The STL plays a role in helping the Foundation Team identify the funding needs of clubs working on service projects and in helping clubs understand the grant opportunities available for funding projects. COMMUNITY & INTERNATIONAL SERVICE WORLD COMMUNITY SERVICE occurs when two or more Rotary clubs from different countries collaborate on a community service project. This collaboration enables Rotary clubs to undertake projects beyond their local communities, develops closer ties between Rotarians in other countries, furthers international understanding, builds international goodwill, addresses global concerns, and makes a difference in our world. One resource for finding international projects is Rotary s ProjectLINK database on the RI website, where clubs can find projects to sponsor and advertise their own projects. Rotary clubs in disaster areas are often times looked upon as secondary relief responders. To provide the most effective, efficient, and immediate relief to disaster victims, Rotarians are encouraged to work with well-established international relief agencies, such as UNICEF, the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and Doctors Without Borders. Or Rotarians can work with Rotary club or district relief initiatives, such as ShelterBox, World Water Works, Aquabox, and LifeBox. The Disaster Relief and Recovery Rotarian Action Group also provides information and resources. Yet many of these health and hunger problems could be prevented through quality health care, affordable medicine, safe drinking water, and proper sanitation facilities. The Health and Hunger Resource Group supports Rotary club and district efforts to improve health in their communities, especially among children and mothers. It encourages projects that improve nutrition, reduce vulnerability to preventable and treatable diseases, and increase access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. It asks Rotary clubs to learn about literacy and education issues in their communities and help increase access to quality learning opportunities for those in need. Clubs are also encouraged to work with the International Reading Association to conduct literacy projects worldwide. Many District 6450 clubs are very involved in Dictionary projects aimed at providing dictionaries to 3 rd graders. Keith Cross (Helen) - Chicago Southeast Res: 773-468-2241 crossrotary@yahoo.com Bus: 877-569-8623 WATER is essential to human life, yet many people take it for granted. Today, 1.1 billion people nearly 20 percent of the world s population lack access to safe, clean drinking water, and 2.6 billion live without basic sanitation facilities. Contaminated water and inadequate sanitation exacerbate the spread of preventable waterborne illnesses, resulting in the deaths of about 6,000 people every day, the majority of whom are children. Moreover, these problems are leading contributors to worldwide poverty and social instability. The Water Resource Group has been appointed to support Rotary s efforts to address this important global issue. Besides providing information to Rotary clubs and districts, it urges every Rotarian to become aware of water-related issues and participate in a water or sanitation project. The group also works to identify, facilitate, and develop guidelines for major Rotary water and sanitation efforts around the world. Service Team 30 FELLOWSHIPS are one of Rotary International s nine structured programs designed to help clubs and districts achieve their service goals in their own communities and in communities abroad, fostering fellowship and goodwill in the process. Rotary Fellowships encompass a variety of interests ranging from recreational and vocational interests to medical and healthrelated concerns to specific humanitarian projects as a means of furthering international fellowship, friendship, and service. Each fellowship is operated independently of Rotary International, with its own rules, dues requirements, and administrative structure. There are more than 80 fellowship groups ranging from AIDS activists, to floral designers, to editors and publishers. Membership is open to Rotarians, and in some instances, to spouses and Rotaractors as well. The program is sponsored by a local Rotary club in the school district. The mission and operation of EarlyAct TM are closely linked to the ideals of Rotary and provide the foundation and natural succession into Rotary s high school level service club called Interact. EarlyAct TM provides young students the opportunity for gaining an increased awareness and knowledge of their community and the world. At a young age, all students can easily be encouraged to be caring and helpful. Their minds are open to recognize the dignity and worth of each individual, which builds respect for others. EarlyAct TM promotes understanding and the building of friendships among the club members. EarlyAct TM also engages students in character-building activities and prepares them for leadership roles to identify and carry out projects that benefit their school, local and global communities. The EarlyAct TM advisor is expected to facilitate at meetings, which can be held as often as once a week or as little as once a month, and to help the students develop two service projects during the school year. The sponsoring Rotary club members help facilitate and act as mentors and role models. The Rotary club is responsible for assigning a liaison, holding an induction ceremony when the club is formed, and for providing monetary support if needed. The Paul and Jean Harris Home Foundation Purchased May 16, 2005 104 The home Paul built for his bride, Jean Thomson, of Edinburgh, Scotland was named after a street near her home, Comely Bank. As you explore the writings or Paul Harris and read the history of Rotary, you'll find that the founder of Rotary was a visionary, romantic peacemaker. He loved his wife, his friends, and their "children" which were embodied in the creation and phenomenal success of Rotary International. What this home represented was a place of friendship, from the Garden to the many rooms in the house. Rotary today needs this haven of neighborliness to resume the healing, contemplation, and nurturing in our age. Comely Bank is a monument to friendship and more. The Paul and Jean Harris Home Foundation collects funds to continue the upgrade and maintenance of Comely Bank and to establish an endowment for preserving archival records. Paul Harris at Comely Bank, 1942 Comely Bank, today The Harris Home Comely Bank is located at: Paul Harris Home - 'Comely Bank' 10856 S. Longwood Drive Chicago, Illinois 60643 http://www.paulharrishome.com

105 The Paul Harris Memorial and ial Walkway Dedicated December 2, 1987 Paul P. Harris, the founder of Rotary, died in 1947. He was buried in a humble gravesite next to his lifelong friend, Silvester Schiele, first president of the first Rotary Club, at Mount Hope Cemetery in Chicago/Blue Island, Illinois. The Paul P. Harris Memorial and ial Walkway Committee was formed in 1986 by the then Governor of Rotary District 645, Cedric A. Pope, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Blue Island. Its purpose was to build a memorial garden site of beauty and Rotary inspiration worthy of the founder of Rotary and to honor alll past Rotary International presidents. A large plot of land surrounding the Harris-Schiele gravesites was purchased. An 8-foot granite memorial was erected and dedicated on December 2, 1987. Beautiful landscaping has been planted throughout the property. Granite benches have been appropriately placed to provide seating for visitors. An 80-foot walkway now extends from the road to the memorial. This significant project was accomplished with contributions from Rotarians and friends throughout the world. The Paul Harris Memorial and ial Walkway are located at: Mount Hope Cemetery 11500 S. Fairfield Ave. Chicago (Blue Island), Illinois http://www.rotaryfirst100.org/presidents/1910harris/paulharris/memorial/memorial.htm
