2017 HONOR AWARDS for WASHINGTON ARCHITECTURE 2017

Design matters now more than ever. Once again, Seattle is recognized as one of the nation s fastest growing cities. Significant infrastructure projects, such as the viaduct replacement, the seawall reconstruction, expanding light rail and street car networks, and improvements to our ferry terminals are changing the way we move about the region. Public education funding aims to keep up with changing demographics. Neighborhoods are experiencing an unprecedented increase in density. Zoning changes and development incentives attempt to maintain affordable housing and keep our city livable for all. There has rarely been a time when architecture and design has mattered as much as it does today. The AIA Seattle Honor Awards are the ideal platform to recognize the diverse perspectives, scales, and typologies that encompass the practice of architecture in our region, recognizing discerning beauty, ingenious solution, and social and environmental impact. Our community has a well-established legacy of integrated design, environmental stewardship, and a deep commitment to design excellence, fueling a thriving design dialogue that has a far-reaching influence at the national and international level. Let s celebrate your voice and your values, demonstrated by the best of our collective work, by offering recognition for the inspirational, the intelligent and the evocative. As we strive to strengthen our collective commitment to building performance within the context of a changing climate, resource scarcity, and design excellence, AIA Seattle is pleased to once again offer an Energy in Design Award, commending projects that have made quantifiably significant strides in energy reduction while also maintaining the highest qualitative design caliber. The 2017 AIA Seattle Honor Awards offers submittal guidelines and judging criteria that recognize both our profession s changing conditions and our legacy of design leadership. If you ve never submitted before, now is the time. If you ve submitted a project in the past that you think should have won, submit it again. This is a new year and a different jury. Your viewpoint is more important than the photograph. Show us your thinking. Show us what is behind the marketing image; reveal the relationships and ideas that inform your design. What is its genesis? Who does it serve? How does the concept relate to real space? How did factors like site, culture, and material inform the project? Your successes can be measured. Demonstrate energy savings. Share with us your project s energy use and its energy savings story. What creates the balance between efficiency and design? Where are unexpected savings and opportunities? Your voice is essential to the conversation. Join us! JoAnn Wilcox, AIA & Tim Richey, AIA Chairs, 2017 AIA Seattle Honor Awards for Washington Architecture

The AIA Seattle Honor Awards represent the best of built and conceptual work for projects located in the State of Washington or by Washington based architects. Registered architects practicing in Washington are eligible regardless of the project s location. Out of state architects and their offices are also eligible provided that their submitted projects are located within the State of Washington. BUILT projects must have been completed after November 2012. CONCEPTUAL projects must have been initiated after November 2012. For BUILT submissions, professional license is required by at least one member of the design team. For CONCEPTUAL submissions, professional license is not required. If the design team includes more than one office of practice, any member of the project team may submit the joint project. All members of the design team must be acknowledged in the entry and should be aware of the submission. Firms are encouraged to re-enter projects previously submitted if they did not win an award. Projects that have received an AIA Seattle award are not eligible for another award. Any project that credits a juror or a juror s firm as architect, associate architect, consultant, or client is ineligible and will be disqualified if submitted.

AWARD LEVELS & SUBMISSION CATEGORIES

The AIA Seattle Honor Awards program recognizes four levels of achievement within BUILT and CONCEPTUAL categories: the Honor Award, Merit Award, Honorable Mention and Energy in Design Award. AWARD LEVEL CATEGORIES Honor Award: Represents the highest level of achievement Merit Award: Represents exceptional achievement Honorable Mention: Represents distinguished achievement Energy in Design: Represents a balance of design achievement and exemplary energy performance Energy data should be drawn from actual energy use measurements, such as utility bills. If actual usage data is not available, modeled performance may be submitted. If neither are available, submissions may be entered with code level targets. Refer to the Energy Calculator link in the Submittal Requirements section to download the Energy Calculator and instructions. ENERGY IN DESIGN AWARD The Energy in Design Award celebrates a commitment to energy reduction goals by awarding projects that demonstrate high-level energy performance, creative and innovative solutions toward energy efficiency, and exceptional design execution. We request that all entrants in the BUILT category submit energy use data in consideration of this award. We provide an easy-to-use tool, the Energy Calculator, to capture standard energy use information and measure the results against the Architecture 2030 targets. Each Built project is required to submit a completed Energy Calculator spreadsheet and related output, regardless of intent to achieve Architecture 2030 targets.

The AIA Seattle Honor Awards program seeks submissions in the categories of BUILT and CONCEPTUAL, two categories that encompass and celebrate the forefront of Washington architectural design. BUILT The BUILT category recognizes a diversity of scales, from smaller human-scaled work like installations or furniture, through more traditional building-scaled work like homes or institutions, to larger civic-scaled work like master plans or TOD districts. Project examples include, but are not limited to: Details Furniture Installations Unenclosed Structures Residential Institutional Commercial Civic Master plans/campus plans Urban District Plans Transit Oriented Development (not individual buildings) Civic Improvements Redevelopment Projects must have been completed after November 2012, and professional license is required by at least one member of the design team. CONCEPTUAL The CONCEPTUAL category celebrates unbuilt projects that inspire us and further our understanding of design and the built environment. Project examples include, but are not limited to: Competition Entries Research Projects Student or Thesis Work Unbuilt Projects CONCEPTUAL projects are eligible for Merit and Honorable Mention Awards only. Projects must have been initiated after November 2012, and professional license not is required to enter the CONCEPTUAL category. All BUILT submissions will be required to identify primary + secondary (if applicable) project typology and size in order to assist the judges in organizing the built work by type or scale. BUILT projects are eligible for Honor, Merit, and Honorable Mention Awards. In addition, BUILT projects are also eligible for a separate Energy in Design Award. Refer to the Energy in Design Award Criteria below.

The AIA Seattle community has identified the following considerations for the jury to contemplate in the selection of recognized projects, in addition to their own criteria. Inspiration: How does the project manifest its stated concept in form and function? Inspirational projects have a clear and well-resolved stance towards intended use, context, material, craft, and form, and are innovative in thought and practice. Problem-solving: How does the project creatively address challenges inherent in its site, budget, program, materials, collaboration, and context? Strong submissions clearly articulate the organizing principles and creative solutions influencing the design. Environmental Sensitivity: How does the project exhibit intent to minimize negative environmental impacts and enhance a relationship to the natural environment? Consider including metrics, narratives, diagrams/ sketches, or other clear evidence of modeled and actual performance, if applicable. Social Impact: Considering equity and social impacts, how does the project improve or enhance the community in which it is situated? Socially-minded submissions clearly articulate the project s response and contribution to its neighborhood, city and/or broader social context. All submissions should demonstrate clarity of idea, process, and execution through a combination of text, diagrams, drawings, photographs, and other illustrative materials. See the Submittal Requirements section for a full list of required components. Refer to past galleris for examples of submissions. Awards are the final determination of the jury. For the Energy in Design Award, the jury will take into account the reduction in energy usage derived by the project s design in addition to the jury considerations noted above. The award will be selected at the jury s discretion. For more information on the Energy in Design Award and the Energy Calculator, review the Energy in Design Award instructions.
