Smart Buildings Tech Challenge Overview An opportunity for smart building innovators to pilot their technologies at the Brooklyn Army Terminal How to Participate: Review program requirements Submit an application for one or more challenge areas Applicants will be notified by August 15 th Finalists will pitch their solution to EDC in September Following the pitch event, winners will be notified, agreements between winners and EDC will be put in place, and pilots begin 4
Smart Building Tech Challenge Areas Proposed tech solutions should address one of the following areas: Metering: Technologies that increase accuracy and efficiency in electric or water metering Maintenance: Technologies that improve maintenance of on-site infrastructure, including elevators and water pumps Communication: Technologies that facilitate communication between BAT staff, tenants, and the surrounding community or applications that facilitate communication for other smart building solutions 5
Smart Building Tech Challenge Goals 1. Address three distinct challenges at BAT in areas of metering, maintenance and communications 2. Provide technology piloting opportunities to companies with market ready tech 3. Facilitate increased exchange between qualified and relevant technology companies and the Brooklyn Army Terminal community 4. Highlight the Brooklyn Army Terminal as a model for 21 st century innovation within urban industrial campuses 6
Brooklyn Army Terminal 4M sf historic industrial campus 3,500 employees, 100+ tenants from diverse industries including manufacturing, distribution companies, and offices Strategically focused on manufacturing and Made in NY creative production/media companies Direct access to Subway (N, R), Ferry, Bus, Gowanus Expwy 7
Challenge Area Details Electric Metering Details - BAT is a master-metered building, with electricity supplied by Constellation (supply ESCO). BAT tenants are sub-metered - There are approximately 225 electric meters at BAT, including tenant submeters Elevator and Water Pump Details - BAT features 25 freight elevators and 16 passenger elevators - There are eight domestic water pumps at BAT; each system has two pumps (lead and lag), a compression tank, and a controller Communication Details - Due to BAT s solid construction supporting loads of up to 250 pounds per square foot, wireless communication through the building s fortified interior can be challenging 8
Selection Criteria NYCEDC will base its selection upon the following criteria: Project Feasibility (30%): Market-ready technology, ease of technology implementation, and simplicity of technology maintenance Project Impact (30%): Alignment with the challenge areas; reduced or avoided costs; lower environmental impacts; increased connectivity; job growth potential Project Cost (20%): Reasonable costs given size and scope of the project Quality of Proposal (15%): Project team s qualification and preparedness Project Team Relationship to NYC (5%): Preference for project teams with a local presence such as NYC-based offices or staff 9
