Rea Jacobs Scholarship for Dance 2018 The Rea Jacobs Scholarship for Dance is a competitive scholarship for Nassau and Suffolk High School Graduating Seniors who are pursuing a four year college degree with a major or minor in Dance. The scholarship is funded by the Long Island Dance Consortium and the Jacobs Family. One award of $1000 will be given in 2018 to a male or female student. *The winner will be invited to perform with member companies of the Long Island Dance Consortium in Kaleidoscope of Dance I and II at the Summer Arts Festival in Heckscher Park in 2018. About Rea Jacobs Rea Jacobs dedicated over 60 years of her life to working in and supporting the arts in all its forms. She was well known and respected for directing innovative theatre productions and creating and producing the Performing Arts Series on Long Island and in Middletown, NY where she was the Director of the Orange County Arts Council. She was also the creator and director of the International Jewish Arts Festival, the largest of its kind in the world, which ran joyously for 19 years in Commack, NY. She served as the Long Island Dance Consortium s Festival Coordinator and dedicated the last 12 years of her life to helping to create and direct LIDC s Celebration of Dance performances as well as performances at the Huntington Arts Council's Summer Arts Festival at Heckscher Park. It is a great honor for her family to be a part of this scholarship in order to continue her support of the Consortium and young artists and to help her legacy live on. About the Long Island Dance Consortium Long Island Dance Consortium consists of members of the Long Island dance community committed to provide education, develop awareness and increase understanding of all forms of dance in order to expand and cultivate the dance audience on Long Island. Members include dance companies, dance professionals, dance advocates, dance studios and Arts Councils. LIDC is an IRS 501 3 non-profit organization. www.dancelongisland.org To Apply: Who Should Apply: The Rea Jacobs Scholarship for Dance is funded by The Long Island Dance Consortium and the Jacobs Family and is intended for a High School Graduating Senior (Male or Female) who shows exceptional promise in dance. The winner will be chosen based on the evaluation of a submitted DVD of a solo dance performance (approximately 2.5 minutes) and an essay. Prospective students who have demonstrated a strong interest in dance throughout high school (parochial, private and BOCES schools are eligible) and are pursuing a four year college degree with a major or minor in dance are encouraged to make an application for this award. Please plan in advance to have packages in our office on Friday May 4 th, 2018. Portfolio Materials to be included with the Application: 1. Solo Dance Performance- One 2.5 minute solo dance. Online submissions allow for an upload in multiple formats. Mailed in or handed in samples must be in DVD format. Please label length and title of work. 2. Essay - A typed, double-spaced, one-page essay expressing how dance has enriched the student s life and describing the student's future goals as they relate to dance. 3. Additional Details: Submitted application materials will be reviewed and rated by the Long Island Dance Consortium s Scholarship Committee. We cannot accept attendance at a live performance as part of the application process. Scholarship applicants should follow the application process outlined above.
