Passion of Christ Strengthen Me Volume XLVII Number 7 Bishop Neumann Central Catholic Jr/Sr. High School 202 South Linden Avenue, Wahoo, NE 68066 (402) 443-4151 February 2018 Dear Neumann Parents and Friends: Our Lincoln diocese currently has 39 seminarians studying for the priesthood; 18 of them are at the college level at St. Gregory the Great Seminary in Seward. Of those 18, roughly 75 percent are graduates of the six Catholic high schools in our diocese. Another 15 percent were homeschooled, and the remaining ten percent graduated from a public high school. These are striking statistics, particularly when it is noted that most Catholic high school students in our diocese about 65 percent attend public schools. Facts like these are encouraging for me when I consider the work we are about here at Neumann, offering a solidly Catholic education that supports the formation in discipleship that takes place in the home. Even more so, over the years I have seen ever greater evidence of the influence of Catholic schools at the parish level. Catholic school graduates tend to grow into leadership positions at the parish, they take more hours of Adoration, they tend to volunteer more, they are more giving of their material wealth. This is only anecdotal experience on my part, but I definitely see it. First and foremost, passing on this life in Christ happens at home. If life in Christ is important enough to parents, they will see a Catholic school as a means of valuable assistance for them, which again is what we are about at St. John Nepomucene, St. Wenceslaus, and Bishop Neumann. It happens to be that at this point in time our three schools of Saunders County find ourselves in a serious but solvable financial crossroads. We are using a funding model for our schools that is in need of revision. The Advancement Committee the School Board of Saunders Catholic Schools has been looking at this problem for some time and is beginning to act. We invite you to attend an Open Forum on March 6 at 7pm at the Neumann Café (see the bulletin advertisement below). There we will present our current circumstances along with our planned solution. To have an affordable and available Catholic education for any family that desires that assistance in the formation of their children is such a precious gift. Join us in seeing what can be done to preserve that gift long into the future. In Christ, Fr. Mike Morin Saunders Catholic Schools Open Forum Meeting: Bishop Neumann will host an Open Forum Meeting on March 6 th, 2018 at 7PM in the Neumann Café. Please plan to attend to review an update on the Saunders Catholic Schools Strategic Plan, the financial projections for all three schools, the tuition and stewardship overview and the announcement of an annual appeal campaign. The majority of our current financial model for Catholic education is funded by the generous support of our local parishes, who contribute over 50% of the cost of education. There are 10 parishes that have generously supported our schools and students, which consistently enabled the schools to offer affordable tuition for our families. But, this is putting a burden on our parishes. Are you aware that seven of the parishes in the Saunders Catholic School system currently offer financial support to OUR schools in an amount that exceeds their total weekly collection? We will be hosting an open discussion on the financial requirements of the schools and how we can continue to offer affordable Catholic education in Saunders County, without putting such a heavy burden on our parishes. Please join us! Registration for 2018-2019 School Year in the Neumann teria Registration nights Monday, March 12th 7 th grade @ 6:30 pm in café Tuesday, March 13th 9 th grade @ 6:30 pm in café Wednesday, March 14th 10 th, 11 th, & 12 th Grades @ 6:30 PM pm in café

Campus Ministry continues to pray daily for our students and faculty. On Monday of Catholic Schools Week each grade attended a retreat at a different parish in the deanery. Students listened to talks, did service projects, and all were able to attend confession and mass. Bishop Neumann also experienced its first Eucharistic Procession throughout the school. Students prayed the Divine Mercy Chaplet as the Eucharist was carried through the building. This was followed by Adoration in the gym. It was a great time for prayer and thanksgiving for our Catholic schools. Financial Peace??? What if you could be debt-free with an emergency fund of 3 6 months of expenses saved, all while investing for retirement and planning for your family s future? Sound impossible? It s not! With Dave Ramsey s class Financial Peace University, you CAN take control of your money. If you re interested in learning more about the class, message me! Because we re offering it at Bishop Neumann just for you starting Sunday February 25 th at 4:00PM. John and Emily Kreikemeier will be hosting Dave Ramsey s Financial Peace Classes. E-mail John-Kreikemeier@cdolinc.net or visit https:// fpu.com/1059085 for more information. SENIOR PARENT INFORMATION Don t forget! If you haven t reserved a space in the yearbook for your son s or daughter s ad to congratulate them on all of their successes, you can still do so. Please send in your picture, write up and payment of $40, to the Journalism department by Monday, March 19th (or as soon as possible). Any questions please call the school and talk to Mrs. Unger. Or you can email Mrs. Unger at tracyunger@cdolinc.net Also Seniors need to bring in their senior pictures to Mrs. Unger for the yearbook, class board and newspaper as soon as you have them, and no later than April 10th. Vertical pictures work best for all three. You can email the digital forms to tracy-unger@cdolinc.net You will have to turn in at least one hard copy of a senior picture for the class board. We will not print them for the board.

Congratulations to seniors, Faith Chmelka and Therese Chohon, on both winning Honorable Mention for their artwork at the Scholastic Art Contest! Their work was selected by a jury of professional artists from contestants statewide! They will receive their award on February 24 th at the TAC building for OPS in Omaha.

Bishop Neumann High School s Drama Program is proud to announce its spring production, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Set during World War II, the first of C.S. Lewis Chronicles of Narnia, has been one of the most popular children s books since it was published in 1950. Our April production will faithfully recreate the tale of Aslan the great lion, his struggle with the White Witch, and the adventures of four siblings who wander into an old wardrobe that yields a passageway into the mysterious realm of Narnia.
