Be part of a world-leading centre of life-changing care for children, young people and their families

Our background Evelina London Children s Hospital is part of Guy s and St Thomas NHS Foundation Trust. Our history Evelina London Children s Hospital cares for children and young people from across south London and south east England. We offer a unique range of services from antenatal diagnosis through to childhood, into adolescence and on into adult life. Children s services at Evelina London are mainly located in our state-of-the-art building at St Thomas Hospital, but we also provide care to young patients in the community in Lambeth and Southwark. Our mission why are we here? To provide world-leading and responsive healthcare involving children and their families. Our vision what are we trying to achieve? To be a world-leading centre of life-changing care for children, young adults and their families. Our values Put patients first. Take pride in what we do. Respect others. Act with integrity. Strive to be the best. 2 The original Evelina Hospital for Sick Children opened in 1869 on Southwark Bridge Road, London. It was funded by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild in memory of his wife, Evelina, who had died along with their son who was born prematurely. In its first year, more than 300 children were admitted to the hospital s 30 beds. By 1900, bed numbers had doubled, with more than 1,000 admissions and more than 20,000 children visiting the hospital each year. During the Second World War, Evelina closed to inpatients to serve as a casualty post. It was hit by bombs three times during the Blitz in 1940, 1941 and 1944. Following the creation of the National Health Service in 1948, Evelina merged with Guy s Hospital and moved to the newly opened Guy s Tower in 1973. Designed by children for children In 2005, Evelina London moved to a new purposebuilt children s hospital at St Thomas. The award-winning building has been described as a hospital that does not feel like a hospital. Its floors are themed around the natural world and it has a huge, glass-roofed conservatory. The building was designed around the needs of the children and their families. Our young patients were involved in developing designs for the building, as well as our distinctive fingerprint logo. Evelina London was the first new children s hospital to be built in London for more than 100 years. It is now the second largest provider of children s services in London. Over the next 30 years, as hospital services for children became more specialised, the children s department developed a worldwide reputation in a number of areas, including children s heart surgery, nephrology and neurology. 3

Our services Evelina London is at the heart of a network of children s health services in Lambeth and Southwark and across south east England. We provide a comprehensive range of children s health services, so that we are able to look after patients from antenatal diagnosis through childhood, into adolescence and on into adult services. We are the only hospital in London to have highly specialised women s and children s services on one site. This means that our youngest patients can get the specialist care they need on the same hospital site as their mothers. Our specialties Neonatal care For the youngest patients, our neonatal intensive care unit cares for babies born prematurely and those with surgical, cardiac, neurological, renal and metabolic disorders. Staff within this unit have the opportunity to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, rotating through these areas to develop new skills and experience. Ambulatory care We provide a high quality service across all the specialties for children and families from birth to 18 years. Most children will gain their first experience of a hospital at our outpatient department. It is a busy, buzzing place that provides a good opportunity to introduce health promotion and listen to the families concerns. Within this service we offer staff opportunities to rotate and work within the different areas to learn and develop new skills and knowledge. Tertiary services We provide a comprehensive range of services, including cardiology, orthopaedics, neurology and inherited metabolic diseases. Young patients tend to travel from further away for this specialist care. We provide a holistic child and family-centred approach to the management of children with chronic lifelong conditions requiring complex care, building relationships with families and providing support at the most difficult times. Surgery Our surgical teams treat patients with a wide range of conditions, performing highly complex and specialist surgery. This multi-disciplinary team provides support to families before, during and after surgery. All our teams are highly motivated with excellent communication skills. They enjoy working in an energetic, challenging and, at times, demanding area. Research We lead a huge amount of child health research aimed at improving patient care, developing better treatments and increasing our understanding of disease. Our growing portfolio of more than 80 national and international studies involves more than 3,000 patients. Evelina London s clinicians work closely with families, charities and schools on all kinds of child health research including: Allergy Asthma Cardiology Neurosciences Orthopaedics Public health We are home to the Evelina Newborn Imaging Centre, part of the Centre for the Developing Brain, a major neonatal research facility in collaboration with King s College London. 8 Evelina London Children s Hospital Evelina London Children s Hospital 9
