One pear contains only 100 calories. Pears are a good source of vitamin C and fiber. A fresh pear is ripe when the stem area of the pear is soft when gentle pressure is applied. If the middle of the pear is soft to the touch, the pear is overripe. Michigan ranks No. 5 in regard to harvesting pears. The top two pear varieties grown in Michigan are Bartlett and Bosc. Other pear types include: Anjou, sweet with a citrus flavor. Comice, sweet with a buttery taste. Concorde, crunchy with a vanilla flavor. Seckel, small in size and very sweet. Pears are available at all American House locations.
