General Information LOCATION San Diego is a vacationers dream, offering something for everyone. Coronado isn t actually an island, although many people think it is. It s connected to the mainland by the Silver Strand, which is a long isthmus that runs south of the island and connects it to Imperial Beach. 2. The sand on Coronado is among the softest in southern California and is ideal for building sand castles. In fact, a man named Bill Pavlacka, known as the Sandcastle Man, creates a large, intricate sand sculpture in front of the Hotel del Coronado every day. 3. Ronald Reagan was the first person to drive across the Coronado Bridge when it first opened in 1969. 4. The Hotel del Coronado was largest resort in the world when it opened in 1888. 5. San Diego is the second largest city in California and the eighth largest city in the United States. 6. San Diego is the Craft Beer Capital of the World with more than 100 breweries, microbreweries and brewpubs. The city is also the birthplace of the Double IPA, or Imperial IPA, also known as San Diego pale ale. 7. San Diego has more farms than any other U.S. city. There are more than 7,000 farms in the city and 347 organic produce growers in the area. Ninety percent of the nation s avocados come from San Diego County. 8. San Diego is home to the largest oceanographic museum in the U.S., the Birch Aquarium at Scripps. 9. San Diego was home to the first drive-in restaurant in the U.S. It opened in 1951 by the man who later founded Jack in the Box. 10. Wednesday, May 24 Evening Offsite Activities All attendees are to meet in the lobby of the Marriott for each event at 4:30 p.m. YACHTING AROUND Enjoy a beautiful San Diego sunset cruise complete with champagne and hors d oeuvres aboard the Hornblowers High Spirits Yacht. Sailing time is 5:00 p.m. 7:15 p.m. Hornblowers will pick up guests at the Coronado Ferry Landing Dock, which is within walking distance from the hotel. WINE AND DINE Experience a unique wine-tasting event in the resort s Bordeaux Cellar and on the Sunset Patio. When guests arrive they will be greeted with a sparkling wine. Throughout the evening there will be four additional wine tastings paired perfectly with gourmet party platters. The event runs 5:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. Guests will board the ferry to the mainland and then walk to the Wine and Culinary Event Center.
