Grant Requests up t: $5,000 Special Thanks t Our Funding Partners: Intrductin The Chesapeake Bay Trust prmtes public awareness and participatin in the restratin and prtectin f the Chesapeake Bay and its lcal streams and rivers. Since 1985, the Trust has awarded mre than $100 millin in grants t schls, nnprfit rganizatins, and public agencies thrughut the jurisdictins in the Chesapeake Bay watershed (Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Delaware, New Yrk, and the District f Clumbia. The Trust is supprted by purchases f the Treasure the Chesapeake license plates, the Chesapeake Bay and Endangered Species Fund cntributin line ptin n the Maryland State incme tax frm, and dnatins frm individuals and crpratins. The Trust greatly appreciates the supprt that makes ur prgrams pssible! The Trust welcmes yur interest and encurages yu t learn mre abut hw t apply fr a grant. Gals f the Mini Grant Prgram fr pre-k-12 Educatin Requests River by river and stream by stream, pre-k-12 envirnmental educatin prjects are helping t raise public awareness abut the health f streams, rivers, and the Chesapeake and Castal Bays and abut the steps that can be taken t restre and prtect them. Thrugh the Mini Envirnmental Educatin Grant Prgram, the Trust seeks t increase student awareness and invlvement in the restratin and prtectin f ur regin s natural resurces thrugh increasing student access t prgrams that prvide Meaningful Watershed Educatinal Experiences (knwn as MWEEs). The prgram was established t prvide accessible funds t schls, rganizatins, and agencies fr pre-k-12 envirnmental educatin and specifically seeks t: 1) Educate students abut natural resurces and their lcal watersheds and abut hw students can becme envirnmental stewards and make a difference in watershed health; Fr questins, please cntact Emily Stransky: EStransky@CBTrust.rg, 410-974-2941 x101

p. 2 2) Engage schl cmmunities in educatin and restratin activities that benefit watershed health; 3) Prvide Meaningful Watershed Educatinal Experiences (MWEEs) fr students and teachers; 4) Prvide envirnmental educatin prfessinal develpment pprtunities fr teachers; and 5) Supprt envirnmental literacy gals within schls, schl systems, and ther educatinal institutins. *Applicants interested in small requests (<$5,000) t supprt general public awareness and invlvement prjects targeting adult cmmunities shuld refer t the Mini Grant Applicatin Package fr Cmmunity Engagement and Restratin Prjects available HERE. The Trust is cmmitted t the advancement f diversity and inclusin in its grant-making and envirnmental wrk. As a result, the Trust strngly encurages grant applicatins directly frm underrepresented grups and fr prjects that increase awareness and participatin f cmmunities that are traditinally underrepresented, such as cmmunities f clr. Fr a full descriptin f the Trust s effrts t engage under-engaged grups, please see ur 2015-2020 Strategic Plan. Eligible Prject Types and Assciated Criteria The Trust funds tw types f prjects in this prgram: Meaningful Watershed Educatinal Experiences (MWEEs) and prfessinal develpment fr educatrs. These tw types f prjects are described in this sectin and specific criteria against which applicatins will be evaluated can be fund belw. Prject Type 1 Meaningful Watershed Educatinal Experiences (MWEEs) fr students: A gd MWEE is nt just an utdr field trip. MWEEs are multi-faceted learner-centered experiences that fcus n investigatins int lcal envirnmental issues that lead t infrmed actin and civic engagement. Applicants are encuraged t review surces fr best practices fr meaningful utdr experiences. These can be fund at http://www.cbtrust.rg, then the Grants and Opprtunities tab, and then the Additinal Resurces page. Specifically, the Educatr s Guide t the Meaningful Watershed Educatinal Experience (MWEE) has tls and examples fr building a successful, impactful MWEE. There are fur steps (essential elements) and fur imprtant cmpnents (supprting practices) that teachers must incrprate t ensure success. These elements and practices, when cmbined, create a rbust MWEE. Any csts assciated with the fur essential elements can be requested thrugh the Mini Envirnmental Educatin Grant Prgram. Essential Elements 1) Issue Definitin (articulatin f a specific natural resurce prblem n which the students will fcus; serves as the driving questin ): Students chse r are fcused n a lcally relevant envirnmental prblem, issue, r phenmenn requiring backgrund research and investigatin. The driving questin is the big-picture questin that establishes the purpse f the learning and shuld create student interest, encmpasses bth natural and scial system tpics (envirnmental and civic engagement), allws fr activities acrss multiple disciplines and allws fr student investigatin f a lcally relevant envirnmental prblem, issue r phenmenn.

p. 3 Supprting questins are generated by the students and shuld uncver students current knwledge abut the issue, create curisity and direct the students t a specific investigative questin that addresses the rganizing questin in a lcal cntext. Students can be taught abut the issue in a variety f ways depending n the issue r grade level: thrugh classrm instructin, the cllectin f data, cnducting experiments, talking t experts, and/r reviewing credible publicatins. Students reflect n their persnal experiences and values related t the issue. Please nte, the Trust highly encurages as much student chice, as age apprpriate, in the selectin f the driving questin and thus issue investigatin (yunger typically needs mre guidance than lder). Nte: The prpsal narrative frmat is intended t serve as a planning tl fr the applicant t assist them in prviding a high quality envirnmental educatin experience fr their students. 2) Outdr Field Experience (students participate in ne r mre utdr experiences sufficient t investigate the issue): Students begin explring the chsen issue and answering the driving and supprting questins in a variety f ways: thrugh bservatins; data cllectin; field trips led by experienced envirnmental educatin field trip prvider; r utdr experiences led by the teacher r envirnmental prfessinal Regardless f the means, students are making and recrding bservatins t help them answer their supprting and rganizing questins. As data cllectin prgresses the students will begin t hypthesize answers t their questins. Inside study (e.g., classrm, cmputer, r library research) can be supprted t build backgrund knwledge and gain a deeper understanding f their issue. Unfrtunately, due t limited funding and Trust pririties, fully indr experiences will nt be supprted. 3) Student-led Actin Prjects (students identify, explre, and implement slutins t address the issue): Investigatins lead t student designed slutins t slve an envirnmental prblem, issue, r phenmenn identified in the investigatins. Students design slutins and cnduct a prject f their wn and/r participate in teacher designed prjects (fr mre structured inquiry and/r when age-apprpriate). Create a list f all ptential actin prjects and discuss hw each ptin will impact the issue; cnsider prjects that might serve as slutins in the cmmunity r n the schl campus An actin prject is selected based n an understanding f the ptential impact f the prject t address the issue. Actin prjects can seek t have natural resurce restratin benefits r cmmunity engagement benefits. Investigatins and prjects are (in part r whle) designed t take place in the lcal envirnment (utdrs). The Trust encurages students t extend their learning t civic actin like the nes listed belw. This pprtunity allws students t cntinue t slve a real-wrld issue and is an excellent pprtunity t invlve civics, scial studies, gvernment, etc. in the prject/unit. Actin prjects can create change and serve as a slutin at three different levels: a systems level, a cmmunity level, r an individual level. Actin Prject Examples: Example Prjects t affect Systems level change (systems level changes seek t affect pwer structures, rganizatins, and the envirnment in which decisins are made): Civic Actin (e.g., twn meetings, writing elected fficials/decisin makers) Educating rganizatins abut relevant lcal plicies Example Prjects t affect Cmmunity Level change (cmmunity level changes seek t affect cmmunity attitudes, nrms, awareness, r practices; and ften target entire cmmunities r large grups within the cmmunity):

p. 4 Cmmunity Engagement (e.g., presentatins, scial media, event-rganizing, messaging at cmmunity events/fairs/festivals, mentring, PSAs, flyers, psters t change cmmunity nrms, attitudes, and awareness) Example Prjects t affect Individual Level change (individual level changes seek t implement discrete prjects that influence the knwledge, attitudes, beliefs, and practices f individuals): Watershed Restratin r Prtectin (e.g., create schlyard habitat, planting trees r grasses, invasive species remval, cmmunity cleanup, strmwater management) Everyday Chices (e.g., reduce/reuse/recycle, cmpsting, energy cnservatin, water cnservatin) Habitat and Restratin prject requests must include: A native plant list (funds may be requested fr native plant species nly); A site plan/prject design; A pht f the planting/restratin site; A detailed maintenance plan indicating a cmmitment t the prject s lng-term success. Fr prjects n schl prperty, the grunds department and the Principal must sign the maintenance plan; and Fr prjects planned n prperties ther than that f the applicant, a letter stating that permissin has been granted by the entity wning the land n which the prject will be cmpleted. Prjects can be cmpleted n public prperty, prperty wned by nnprfit rganizatins, cmmunity-wned prperty, r schl grunds. 4) Synthesis & Cnclusins (students assess their understanding f the issue and have the pprtunity t refcus and reflect after a prject is cmpleted): Students share data and cmmunicate results t fellw students, teachers, parents, lcal prfessinals, and pliticians. Educatrs evaluate student prgress bth in knwledge and skills. Supprting Practices 1) Classrm Integratin: MWEEs shuld be fully integrated int what is ccurring cncurrently in the classrm, and shuld ccur where and when they fit int the instructinal sequence. MWEEs can be rich, multi-disciplinary units that have a unique pprtunity t make strng cnnectins amng subject areas and reflect an integrated apprach t learning. 2) Active Teacher Supprt: MWEEs shuld be cnnected t what is ccurring in the frmal classrm; therefre classrm teachers shuld lead r actively supprt all phases. MWEEs can be enhanced and supprted by partners, such as envirnmental educatrs and natural resurce prfessinals, but teachers have the sustained cntact with students thrughut the schl year that psitins them t better supprt and evaluate student learning. Teachers can als serve as envirnmental rle mdels. 3) Lcal Cntext: The lcal cmmunity shuld be viewed as a primary resurce fr MWEEs. Place-based educatin prmtes learning that is rted in the unique histry, envirnment, culture, ecnmy, and art f a students schlyard, neighbrhd r cmmunity, and thus ffering the pprtunity t explre hw individual and cllective decisins impact ne s immediate surrundings. There are a variety f lcal places that can prvide an engaging setting fr utdr learning including the Chesapeake Bay, a stream near a schl, a schl building and its grunds, lcal parks r undevelped areas, and even develped areas such as parking lts, ball fields, and marinas. 4) Sustained Activity: MWEEs shuld be a sustained activity that stimulates and mtivates the student frm beginning t end. Thugh a field experience may ccur n ne day the ttal duratin leading up t and

p. 5 fllwing the experience shuld invlve a rich learning experiences such as mnitring, research, and actin prjects that may spread ver weeks r even mnths. Experiences such as turs, gallery visits, simulatins, demnstratins, r nature walks may be instructinally useful, but alne d nt cnstitute a meaningful watershed educatinal experience. MWEE Evaluatin Criteria the fllwing criteria will be used t evaluate requests fr MWEE prjects: Cmpleteness f the MWEE (Scale f 1-25): Are the essential elements f a MWEE present and rbust? Supprting Practices (Scale f 1-25): Are the supprting practices f a MWEE present? Age-Apprpriateness (Scale f 1-10): This prcess shuld be age apprpriate with practices grwing in cmplexity and sphisticatin acrss the grades, starting with educatr guided investigatin and prgressing t student-led inquiry. As students mature, the level and cmplexity f inquiry will likewise prgress. Outdr Classrm Requests Using the MWEE narrative, applicants may request funds fr the cnstructin f utdr classrms. Applicants must demnstrate hw the prjects, during design and cnstructin as well as in the years after cmpletin, will supprt high quality instructin f students. Technical sundness (Scale f 1-30): Outdr classrm prjects must be carefully planned and technically sund, and invlve the assistance f qualified technical experts, agencies, r rganizatins, as necessary. The applicant must prvide infrmatin abut all technical assistance received and prject partners invlved in the design and implementatin f the restratin prject t enable reviewers t assess this criterin. Prject Type 2 Prfessinal Develpment fr Schl Staff: Applicants may request funds fr prfessinal develpment experiences fr teachers, administratrs, and ther schl staff t build understanding f envirnmental cntent and cmpetence in inquiry based and investigative instructinal techniques. Trainings and wrkshps shuld supprt elements f the MWEE mdel, such as the investigatin f a lcal envirnmental issue, using the utdrs (lcal cmmunities, schlyards and natural areas, watersheds and/r the Chesapeake Bay) as a cntext fr learning, and/r design and implementatin f an actin prject. The Trust encurages trainings and nging supprt t be at least 30 hurs, t ensure that participants are successful in using new infrmatin gained in the training. Mdeling f Envirnmental Educatin pedaggy in the delivery f prfessinal develpment as much as pssible, including use f the field and/r cmmunities fr instructin. Include strategies t increase the envirnmental literacy f the participating teachers, encuraging them t be envirnmental rle mdels fr their students. Existence f a plan r draft list f teachers by subject and grade level that are targeted t attend the trainings with an explanatin f why these teachers were selected fr the training.

p. 6 A draft agenda shuld be included. The absence f a draft agenda will need t be justified. A cmpnent f all prfessinal develpment trainings shuld be an verview f the MWEE mdel t ensure participants are able t use what is learned t design, enhance, and/r implement their wn MWEE. Prfessinal Develpment Evaluatin Criteria - the fllwing criteria will be used t evaluate requests fr Prfessinal Develpment prjects: Sundness f plan (Scale f 1-40): Des the length f the training ensure teacher success? Will teachers be supprted befre, during, and after the training? Is the draft agenda apprpriate?
