ACAAA 2016 Annual Conference Tentative Agenda as of Tuesday, May 10, 2016 Tuesday, May 24, 2016 10:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. PRE-CONFERENCE SESSIONS Training for Community Action Boards of Directors Presenter: Veronica Zhang, CAPLAW Nuts and Bolts of Board Governance CAA boards are being held to increasingly high standards of accountability in their exercise of effective financial oversight and stewardship and their ability to comply with the many laws and regulations that apply to their CAAs' operations. In this case studybased session, we will: (1) Discuss the nuts and bolts of tripartite board composition and selection; (2) Explore how CAAs can conduct effective board meetings, and (3) Examine the board s roles and responsibilities in navigating gray areas of organizational leadership, including conflicts of interest, internal and external communications, and compliance with organizational policies. 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. Training for Staff: Family Development, Case Management, Head Start Family Engagement, etc. Presenter: Dr. Barbara Mooney Introducing an Effective Approach to Help-Giving Silver City 4 Helping families work towards self-sufficiency can feel like an impossible task. Frontline workers are often frustrated with their failed attempts to impact change in a family situation. Traditional approaches to help-giving just don t work and leave both the family and worker frustrated. In this session frontline staff will be introduced to a strengths-based approach to help-giving by reviewing the Effective Help Giving Cycle. Participants will reflect on what staff skills truly lead to empowered families and how to develop these skills.
