NATIONAL HISTORY DAY IN MISSOURI CONTEST OPEN TO 4-H YOUTH IN GRADES 6-12 4-H youth in grades 6-12 may be interested in developing a video, speech, website, or other 4-H project to enter and participate in National History Day in Missouri! National History Day in Missouri is the state affiliate of the national educational program, sponsored by the State Historical Society of Missouri, in partnership with the Missouri Humanities Council. The yearlong contest encourages young people to explore historical issues, ideas, people, and events. The contest is open to public, private, and homeschool students, and any youth participating in community-based programs like 4-H. Youth may become involved through their school, after school program, club, or individually, supported by a 4-H leader, parent, teacher, or other influential adult. Youth use both primary and secondary sources to produce sound historical research on any topic they choose related to the annual theme (This year s theme is Rights and Responsibilities in History. ) They then present their findings in one of five formats: Documentary, Exhibit, Performance, Paper, and Website. Projects are evaluated at a series of local and regional competitions before the top projects from each category advance to the state contest. Regional contests are held in February or March in Maryville, Kirksville, Independence, Jefferson City, St. Louis, Joplin, Springfield, Rolla, and Cape Girardeau. Over 2,500 students in Missouri participate in local and regional competitions each year, with nearly 600 advancing to the state contest at the University of Missouri, April 26, 2014. Top winners in each category receive the opportunity to represent Missouri at the Kenneth E. Behring National Contest in June in Washington D.C. Missouri is well represented, with an average of more than 60 students participating in the national contest each year, including several medalists. It is an unforgettable experience that youth will always treasure.
