VBSN APPLICATION PACKET APPLICATION DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 1 FOR FALL APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS Be admitted to Southern Miss Gulf Park as a health sciences major and to the VBSN Pathway (students must have Gulf Park campus as their home campus). Be sure to include your medical training on the application as noted on your military transcript(s). YOU MUST REQUEST THAT YOUR MILITARY TRANSCRIPT(S) BE POSTED TO YOUR STUDENT RECORD. Have a healthcare specialist rating while serving in the military and (if a veteran) be discharged within the last three (3) years (within five (5) years for those who have been employed in a civilian healthcare role). If a veteran, provide a DD-214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty form showing proof of healthcare specialist rating and honorable discharge. Have a minimum national composite ACT of 21 or above. Have a GPA of at least 2.5 or above on a 4.0 scale in non-nursing prerequisite courses and at least a 2.0 in each course. If needed or desired, may repeat a required science course one time. Be in good academic standing at Southern Miss (cannot be on probation, probation continued or suspension). Call your VBSN academic adviser (228.865.4555) for transcript evaluation before applying for admission to the VBSN Pathway. PRE- ADMISSION ADVISEMENT You will receive guidance about o Which courses are needed to complete prerequisite requirements, o Online options for taking prerequisite courses, o Financial aid and scholarships, and o Information about ACT preparation and exam (if needed). Written verification of minimum composite national ACT score must be attached. If a veteran, attach a copy of form DD-214 "Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty" showing proof of healthcare specialist rating and honorable discharge. This is the applicant s responsibility. The College of Nursing and Health Professions will not be responsible for obtaining transcripts/act scores for applicants. Even if transcripts/act scores have been sent to the Admissions office, students must also attach copies with the completed application to Southern Miss College of Nursing and Health Professions. Unofficial copies are acceptable. ACT information can be requested at actstudent.org. This information should be attached and not sent separately. Licensure Information for Applicants: Any individual having been convicted of a misdemeanor or felony may not be allowed to write the NCLEX for RN licensure. The Mississippi Board of Nursing has the discretion and authority to refuse licensure to anyone convicted of a misdemeanor or felony. (See State of Mississippi Laws, Rules and Regulations, Mississippi Board of Nursing Section 73-15-29 (1) (b).) Criminal Background Check: Pursuant to an amendment to Mississippi House Bill HB 1077, Section 43-11-13, Mississippi Code of 1972, all applicants to the College of Nursing and Health Professions must undergo a criminal background check before beginning clinical experiences. Students without a clear criminal background check will be disqualified for clinical training, which is essential to complete the nursing program. Routine Alcohol and Drug Screening: Every student enrolled in a clinical nursing course is required to undergo a drug screen at least every 12 months to determine the presence of alcohol, drugs and/or controlled substances. If the results of a drug screen are positive for alcohol, drugs and/or other controlled substances, the student may not continue in clinical nursing courses. The student is responsible for costs associated with drug screening and confirmation.
