William A. Pease Dear Friend, I wish I could sit down with you face-to-face instead of writing this letter. My name is Bill Pease, and I work for The American Legion which helps our wounded soldiers like Private Jim Thompson. I m sending you this urgent request I have even enclosed a reply envelope for your convenience. I know you will help if you are able. Please read on. On that day in Afghanistan, as the bullets ripped into his body, Private Thompson didn t know if he would make it home. But the same strength and love for country that led him to enlist, pulled him through the surgeries that saved his life. By the time his mother arrived at his bedside in Germany, she found him trying to pull out the IV lines so he could get out of bed. Yet despite his determination and drive, it will take months of rehab and more surgeries before Private Thompson can resume anything resembling a normal life. Jim has sacrificed so much for his country... for you and me. Don t you think it s time for us to do something for Private Thompson and the nearly 42,000
men and women who have been wounded in the fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan? That s where The American Legion and its Veterans Support Services comes in. I m writing you today and asking for your help because so many men and women like Private Thompson are dealing with the traumatic effects of wounds and injuries suffered in battle. Upon their return from war, they re faced with challenges and needs that not even our government institutions can adequately address. Your donation today will be put to use immediately to help our American veterans. A generous gift of $25, $50, or even $100 will help our wounded heroes find the physical, emotional, medical, and financial help they need to reclaim the lives they left behind when they so bravely answered their country s call. Thanks to you, The American Legion is there for our veterans when they need transportation to medical facilities, assistance finding affordable shelter, or simply a shoulder to lean on while enduring grueling physical therapy. In addition, your gift can help provide educational assistance to the children of those veterans who failed to return home. Your gift will help our veterans appeal disability claims and receive the VA benefits they have earned through their selfless service to country. Last year alone, The American Legion helped over 700,000 veterans through the bureaucratic maze of hearings and paperwork to reclaim
more than $23 million in VA benefits that had initially been denied. In short, when you send your gift TODAY (please use the enclosed reply envelope), you are helping our veterans get needed support through many programs that The American Legion provides... You are saying Thank you in the most practical and important way at the moment when they desperately need to know someone cares. It is ingrained in the ethos of our military culture that they never leave a comrade-in-arms behind. Today I m asking you to pick up those who have been injured in battle and make sure they are never forgotten or left behind. The truth is that the military has been overwhelmed by these needs. Advances in medical care on the battlefield mean that many who once would have died survive their wounds. But there is no magic cure to instantly heal and restore them. Many seriously injured members of our Armed Forces come home facing months or even years of continuing medical care and rehabilitation often without the support to help them through it. These courageous young warriors are proud. They have too much pride to ask for help, so I am asking for them. We must step up and answer their silent pleas for help. Will you help us answer that call today? Will you say to young men and women like Private Jim Thompson, You are not alone? Will you help our heroes on their journey of healing?
I hope and pray that your answer to these questions is YES! Yours for our wounded heroes, William A. Pease The American Legion P.S. Private Thompson has already taken the first steps on his long road to recovery...but he is being followed down that difficult path by so many more. I m asking that you use the enclosed reply envelope to send a gift to support our many Veterans Support Programs. Time is critical...so please send your gift today. Thank you in advance for your response.
