Guiding Principles for Nonprofits Leadership How is your organization, staff or Board recognized as a community resource in your field? How is your Board involved in setting vision for your organization? Are your programs/services on the cutting edge in your field? 16

Guiding Principles for Nonprofits Evaluation Apply what you learn through evaluation to improve programming. Integrate evaluation into your planning. Talk about impact and cite examples of success (general operating and capacity building). Include quantitative and qualitative data to substantiate impact (project support). Include constituents in evaluation design and practice 17

Guiding Principles for Nonprofits Sound Management Does your revenue come from appropriately diverse sources? Do you have an adequate cash reserve? How is your Board involved in fundraising? Does your Board contribute financially? What financial reports does your Board review, and with what frequency? 18

Responsive Grant Types Project Support for a specific new or existing project Available to organizations that are new to either The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven or the Valley Community Foundation and those organizations that have received a Responsive Grant in the past 19

Responsive Grant Types General Operating Support to further the general mission and work of an organization, rather than for a specific purpose or project Applicants must be: incorporated for at least five years; have received a Responsive Grant from either The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven or the Valley Community Foundation; have a published givegreater.org profile 20

Responsive Grant Types Capacity Building Support for short term financial assistance to build the infrastructure of an organization for long term success Applicants must be: incorporated for at least five years; have received a Responsive Grant from either The Community Foundation for Greater New Haven or the Valley Community Foundation; have a published givegreater.org profile 21

Required Attachments All Responsive Grant Applications Signed statement of grant submission approval from Board Chair Signed statement from Board Chair indicating understanding and compliance with the foundation s anti-discrimination policy Budget and actual income and expenses for the most recent completed fiscal year Annual operating budget and actual year-to-date income and expenses for the current fiscal year 22

There is no cost to maintain a profile and no monthly fee for online giving access New Donors Nonprofits report receiving gifts from new donors Access to Special Trainings Nonprofits with a published profile can participate in special workshops, such as those created to help engage donors, strengthen marketing and social media outreach and properly account for gifts received during The Great Give. Multiple Uses givegreater.org nonprofit organizations report using their profiles to apply for grant funding; others use it as an outreach tool or for Board/staff orientation 25

Reporting Grant Progress The following are conditions of all responsive grants: Submission of an annual report on the progress made toward outcomes Updates to a grant recipient s existing givegreater.org profile or the creation of one to receive continued funding Subsequent years of funding are conditional based on performance and progress toward stated outcomes 27
