Confidence runs high for the Marquette men s tennis team in 2002-03. The squad is a delicate mix of veterans and capable newcomers. The returning players are out to put last year s 6-13 season behind them while the freshman have hopes of hoisting the Conference USA Men s Tennis Championship Trophy in April. The veterans will be depended on to mold the mix of newcomers into a team. Seniors Kent Davies and Justin Holsen have been through the rigors of three fall and spring seasons and can impart wisdom on their freshmen teammates. You can t underestimate the abilities of our seniors, said head coach David Staniford. They have a drive to see Marquette be successful. Returning to the team for his third season is Raj Gill. Gill will likely spend most of his season playing the no. 1 position, a spot he is very confident in. Last season, Gill finished 7-6 at the top of the Marquette lineup. The early part of the fall season, Gill battled injury but is expected to be 100 percent by the spring. Raj is a very dependable player, Staniford said. We need him to be healthy to be successful. Sophomores Troy Delmege, Creighton Macy and Matt Mueller round out the Marquette returning players. Delmege is a physically imposing player who can win matches with brut strength as well as adept skill. Macy returns after stellar freshman season, going 11-9. Playing lower in the lineup last season, he definitely served as a bright spot for Marquette, owning the second-best singles record on the team. Mueller played sparingly, but proved he knew how to win, going 3-1 in dual match play last season. Our talented sophomores will add depth to our team, Staniford added. We certainly expect good things from them this year. Three freshman dot the roster, all with promise. Eigintas Vedrickas, Ian Kawas and Ricky Servoss all bring wellrounded games to the Marquette lineup. Vedrickas and Kawas also have international success, with each being highly ranked in their respective countries. I m very glad to have been able to bring players with the talents of the three freshman to Marquette, Staniford said. They will make us a better team. The team will have to get its feet wet early. Six home matches are on the schedule and five come in the first seven matches of the year. Staniford hopes his club peaks at the end of the season and hopes that the Conference USA Tournament will be a great place to showcase the team s talent to the local audience. Marquette hosts the tournament April 16-19 in Waukesha. Along the way, MU tangles with some of the best teams in the region and country. 1 Season Preview....................1 Head Coach David Staniford...........2 Meet the Team....................3 2000-01 in Review.................6 MU Singles Champions..............7 All-Time Roster....................8 Milwaukee Tennis Classic.............9 Helfaer Tennis Stadium.............10 Athletics Facilities.................11 This is Marquette.................12 Marquette Athletics................14 Conference USA..................15 Milwaukee, Wis...................16 Strength & Conditioning.............18 Athletics Staff....................19 Location.............. David Staniford began his 11th season as Marquette's head men's tennis coach in 2002-03. Marquette has earned rankings in the Midwest Region poll in eight of the last nine years, while several singles players and doubles teams have been regular participants in regional and national level tournaments. His 16-year overall record is 203-192. At Marquette, he has earned a 96-88 record in 10 seasons. An outstanding junior player in his native Australia in the late 1960s, Staniford went on to play no. 1 singles at the University of Oregon. In Australia, he was coached by legendary Australian Davis Cup coach Harry Hopman. In the early 1970s he played in numerous tournaments on the world circuit, including several Grand Slams, while continuing with graduate school. Staniford continues to play in national USTA tournaments and has been ranked No. 1 in the 35 and 45 divisions in central Illinois, including ranking No. 1 in the region. He was the third-ranked men s 35 player in Canada in 1982 and was a doubles finalist at the 1983 Canadian national tournament. Many of Staniford s juniors have gone on to state, national and international honors. Most recently, he has coached such juniors as Kaylan Caiti (three time state champion) and David Iancu (ranked second in the state) for the past 10 years. He has also developed such players as Ben Davis and Tammye Speil, both on scholarships at Wis.-Green Bay and Wis.-Milwaukee respectively. He continues to coach many Staniford s Coaching History 2 of the better juniors in the state, in his community outreach programs, developmental clinics and camps. Dr. Staniford holds three degrees from the University of Oregon. He earned a bachelor s degree in physical education in 1970. Staniford received a master s degree in physical education and recreation from Oregon in 1970. A former Rotary International Graduate Fellowship recipient, he went on to earn a doctorate degree in physical education and leisure studies in 1975. He has authored many articles and several books including Natural Movement for Children, and his latest work, Natural Tennis. Staniford conducts a camp at Marquette each summer and works with several of the better young juniors players. Staniford also frequently conducts local, national and international clinics.
