PROFILE 2018-2019 CEEB CODE #335290 School: A college-prep boarding and day school for students, grades 6-12, with dyslexia and similar language-based learning disabilities. The School's mission states: "A leader and innovator in dyslexia education with a commitment to the values of kindness, respect, honesty and hard work, since 1926 The Gow School has been helping students with language-based learning differences develop the skills and confidence to succeed in higher education and beyond as creative, compassionate adults and engaged citizens." The School is located in South Wales, New York, 25 miles southeast of Buffalo. The campus has more than 100 acres of fields and woodlands with 23 buildings, five playing fields and five tennis courts. The Gow School is a boarding school of 140 students (26 in the senior class), including an occasional post-graduate and 44 full and part-time teachers. Our students come this year from 17 foreign countries and 26 states. The average class size is six students. The School was permanently chartered by the New York State Board of Regents in 1978 and is accredited by the New York State Association of Independent Schools. It holds membership in the National Association of Independent Schools, The College Board, the International Dyslexia Association, and the Learning Disabilities Association. The Gow School is convinced that even non-standard (i.e., extended time or scripted) administrations of standardized testing will only provide a partial indication of the dyslexic student's intellectual potential, aptitude for academic work, and scholastic accomplishment. NOTE: The Gow School calculates Grade Point Averages using the quality points awarded for the grades earned in each course reported on the transcript. No distinction is made with regard to the institution granting credit or with regard to the levels or types of courses reported. Questions regarding student GPA calculations may be directed to the Director of College Counseling. Because of its small size and special mission, The Gow School does not rank students, though Gow will provide general decile ranks upon request. The Gow School has an established policy of discouraging so-called grade inflation, and works actively with its faculty to avoid awarding unduly high marks. 2018-2019 Course Offerings and Credit: This information demonstrates how we create the typical program of courses for our students. All courses are taught with an awareness of and accommodation for the learning differences of our students. Care is taken to distinguish between the educational "content" of courses and the skills required for mastery. Skills remediation is generalized throughout the curriculum, by specific programs, teaching strategies, and most especially by a highly structured environment. An important component of the academic program is the daily structured study hall time which occupies approximately three hours of the average student's day. There, students gradually learn to take ownership for their academic work. Teachers are available in study hall to answer questions or provide technical help. Each academic day, students are encouraged to request a 30-minute tutorial session with teachers in whose courses they may have questions. By graduation, Gow students have internalized coping, organizational and self-advocacy skills that will serve them for their college careers and beyond. *1) Reconstructive Language is the core course of The Gow School curriculum. Peter Gow designed it in the 1920s, in collaboration with renowned neurologist Dr. Samuel T. Orton. This curriculum undergoes regular revision in keeping with current cognitive and brain research. It continues to be recognized as an excellent approach to the structure and use of English. Reconstructive Language teaches analytical language skills, primarily with the printed or written word. In the earlier years, phonics is mastered in conjunction with vocabulary words, spelling, and practice in oral reading. In grades 11 and 12, Reconstructive Language covers advanced concepts in morphology, etymology, and linguistics. Linguistics Survey is a non-remedial Honors course option for seniors in Reconstructive Language. *2) Honors Advanced Humanities is a research seminar in advanced topics in recent U.S. history and culture. Within the course, strong emphasis is placed on logical and analytical thought, particularly as applied to recent national and world affairs. The course lays equal emphasis on college preparatory content and on critical research methods used at the college level. The culminating activity of the course is the completion of a major research paper. The course simulates the atmosphere of a college classroom. *3) PreCalculus, Calculus I, Calculus II, Economics, Advanced Writing, Laboratory Physics, Advanced Physics, Advanced Biology, Journalism, Linguistic Survey and Advanced Art are particularly challenging electives taught at the college level for well-prepared and motivated students. These courses carry the Honors designation. **Students in Economics, Calculus 1, and Advanced Physics courses are eligible to earn college credit through local colleges. These colleges issue transcripts separately upon satisfactory completion of their requirements.
