This conference consisted of several long days of talking with very knowledgeable ER Doctors and Medical Directors all about cardiac arrests. I was dreaming of cardiac arrests as I slept. Here are the points of this conference. Please share these points with others throughout the medical community. 1) We need to encourage bystander CPR/AED use throughout our community. 2) We need to be focusing on BLS CPR, including good quality compressions of 100-120/min including full recoil of the chest. 3) We absolutely need to limit off the chest time as much as possible. 4) Defib quickly! 5) It s imperative we embrace some form of a pit crew approach to CPR and embrace teamwork. 6) We often believe we are doing better CPR than we really are, we need to accept this! We need to re-train more often than we currently do in both BLS CPR and ACLS. 7) Leaders and medics need to be reviewing the resuscitation with the entire crew, as soon as possible, after the call. What went right? What could we have done better? All of these have been proven time and time again to improve the chances of survival for cardiac arrest patients. We need to embrace these points and/or changes to increase our survivability of these patients. Below are some links you may find helpful: http://www.fiercecert.com/cpr-360---full-view-of-cpr-effectiveness.html#.u6ts841dvfi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vwso_gdqf8y Our Vision We are the leader in the emergency medical services field and the community is confident in our services. Our Mission The mission of the Department of Emergency Medical Services is to deliver valued services to the community that preserve life, improve health, and promote the safety of citizens and visitors, who live, learn, work and play in our community while maintaining a sustainable systems approach that is focused on dynamic resource utilization to enhance the overall quality of life in Virginia Beach. VBEMS Recruitment and Retention Recruitment Check your email for assistance with Recruitment Events. Please contact Susan Palmer if you are available to assist with any events at spalmer@vbgov.com or 757-385-5004. Retention If you feel that one of your co-rescue members has gone above and beyond their responsibilities as a pre-hospital care provider, please advise your Squad Commander so they may refer the member for a class act award or a service award. Thank you for all you do for your community. - Susan Palmer 2014 Page 3 of 33

VBEMS Operations OSCAR Online Scheduling System The OSCAR Online Scheduling System Duty Requests are due by the 10 th of the preceding month. Submit your Duty Requests on www.frompaper2web.com/oscartrack By Christi Budy Captain Are you documenting your procedures? Make sure that you are listing all of the procedures that you perform for your patient in the EMR. Choices include wound care, splinting, BVM, oral/nasal airways, LBB, suction, KED, time of extrication, CPR, intubation, IV and many, many more items. Remember that skills and procedures completed by engine crews should also be included here. The section where you can list things prior to arrival is for bystanders and police. A good rule of thumb is if the person is listed in the EMR (fire and EMS), the skill they perform should be listed in the detailed procedure section with the time, size, location, etc. Page 4 of 33

VBEMS Training WWW.VBEMS.COM/TRAINING Submitted By John Bianco Division Chief Trainees at Special Events and Standbys After reviewing the rules regarding EMT students, the Department of EMS has determined that EMT (Academy) students may not function as patient care providers at special event standbys, including the Amphitheater. A trainee (not a student) could be assigned to a standby ambulance crew, but that requires the AIC of that ambulance to fill out an evaluation just like any other duty. The trainee must function as part of the ambulance crew and not a roaming EMT. Page 5 of 33

To all Providers, We have an excellent and unique course that will be held here at EMS Training on August 26 th and 27 th from 0800 to 1700. We will be hosting a National Board of Diving & Hyperbaric Medical Technology Course called Diving Medicine First Responder. The course is a pilot program that will be free for qualified registrants. This course, after this pilot process is complete, will be approximately $400.00 per person. This is an excellent opportunity to gain a free certification and 16 hours of Category 1 CEUs (which have been applied for at the BLS and ALS level). Attached is the flyer for the course. You must register at EMS Training at 757-385-2970. We will be opening this up to neighboring EMS personnel shortly and have enough space for 75 registrants. You must be able to attend both days to register and have a minimum certification as an EMT. Thank you and please contact me via e-mail for any questions. Quick Glance Calendar of Events Based upon input (and some help from you tube videos) we have launched a Google calendar (Virginia Beach EMS Training Institute) with EMS classes and important EMS events. This is a calendar for classes offered by the Virginia Beach EMS Training Institute primarily for the EMS providers (volunteer, career and fire) of the Virginia Beach ERS system and EMS system events. You MUST preregister for all classes at least 7 days prior to the class by contacting the VBEMS Training Center @ 385.2970 or EMSTrain@vbgov.com. Additional preregistration items may be required. Classes start promptly: late, non-confirmed and walk up persons cannot be accommodated in classes that involve a defined student instructor ratio. Calendar subject to change. For the most up to date information, please go to https://www.google.com/calendar/embed?src=emstrain%40vbgov.com&ctz=america/new_york. We are working to provide this calendar on the VBEMS.com website also. Department items to be added should be directed to Mary Anne Blett-Myers. Input is still requested as we refine this method of communication, please forward to Chief Bianco directly. Thanks for all you do! Month August 2014 Page 26 of 33
