June 9, 2016 Dear marching band students, parents and guardians, As the current school year comes to a close, the new marching band season is about to get underway. Percussion and colorguard rehearsals start next week. As you may be aware, our musical theme for 2016 is Music of the Night The band will be performing All Night Long (Lionel Richie), Nights in White Satin (The Moody Blues), Late in the Evening (Paul Simon) and The Music of the Night (from Phantom of the Opera). We are looking forward to another exciting year with outstanding performances and life-long memories. Spring Lake High School marching band camp will be held at Grand Valley State University in Allendale from July 25-29. The cost of band camp this year is $250. In addition, all students must pay a uniform usage fee of $30 (a new pair of gloves for all students is included in the $30 fee). Students will be also need to order black Drillmaster marching shoes ($32-new, $12-used, if available) at the uniform fitting times. All checks can be made payable to Spring Lake Bands or Spring Lake Public Schools. Parents/guardians with multiple children in band should contact Mr. Truszkowski at mtruszkowski@springlakeschools.org for their discounted band camp rate. Students may use funds in their student fundraiser accounts to help pay for band camp. Student account balances are available for viewing at charmsoffice.com, however most accounts will not be updated until after July 1. The username is slhsband and the password is your child s Spring Lake issued student number. If you need help with the username and/or password for charmsoffice.com contact Mr. Truszkowski. Attendance at band camp is mandatory. All other scheduled rehearsals and performances are also mandatory. Since each band member has an individual spot in our show or is the only one playing their part, every absence hurts the entire group. Students, please clear your schedule so you are able to make all rehearsals and performances. Parents, please plan to pick up your child from band camp on Friday, July 29. If you cannot pick up your child please make arrangements with another parent to pick up your child or let Mr. Truszkowski know if your child needs a ride. There will not be a bus to return students to school after band camp. On Friday of band camp, the band will perform at 2:30pm at GVSU in lot D. It s always wonderful to see the performance and how much the band has accomplished in four and a half days! Students may go home with parents after their room is clean and they have checked out (with returned key). A band camp informational meeting for parents will be held on Thursday, July 14 from 7:00pm- 7:45pm in the High School Band Room. The meeting will begin promptly at 7:00pm. Band camp payment, including the uniform usage fee and medical forms (coming soon) can be turned in from 6:30-7:00 in the commons or following the meeting. If you cannot attend, please deliver payment and the forms to the Spring Lake High School Office. We hope that the information contained on the following pages will help answer most questions about the season for both new and returning marchers. Please review everything and most importantly, put the performance and rehearsal dates in your calendar ASAP. Contact us if you have any questions. Thank you, Mike Truszkowski & Mark Grevengoed Band Directors, Spring Lake Public Schools

STUDENT RULES AND REGULATIONS Band camp is a school-sponsored activity. All Spring Lake High School handbook rules including those regarding the use and possession of tobacco, alcohol, illegal drugs and weapons are in effect. In addition, GVSU rules and regulations apply as well. Any student found guilty of damage or destruction to GVSU property, Spring Lake Band equipment or another student s private property will be personally responsible to pay for damages. Violations of any rules will result in disciplinary action including the possibility of being sent home. The marching band will be housed in North Living Center A (Ella Koeze-Weed Living Center) and North Living Center B (Icie Macy Hoobler Living Center). Our band has outgrown most Living Centers on the north end of campus. Thus we will have boys in one dorm and girls in another. Boys and girls are allowed to hang out in either dorm s lobbies. However, boys are not allowed in the girls hallways and girls are not allowed in the boys hallways. No student is permitted to enter the room of another student. No student may leave camp without permission from Mr. Truszkowski and the head chaperones. No student vehicles are allowed at camp. No visitors are allowed at camp other than immediate family members. Others will be asked to leave - especially significant others. Please do not invite alumni to band camp. They are however welcome to attend the performance on Friday. Curfews and lights out will be enforced. Everyone needs to be in assigned rooms and are not to leave for any reason. Lights should be out and all games and activities should be done at 11:15 pm. Everyone needs enough rest to be able to work effectively during the day. Students are expected to be on time and prepared for all activities. Reporting five minutes early is considered on time. Students are to eat all meals at the Grand Valley dining hall or where designated. Everyone must eat something at all meals and drink fluids at each meal. The daily schedule, as well as changes to the daily schedule will be listed on a white board in the dorm room lobby. Review the white board whenever entering or leaving the dorm. Appropriate clothing must be worn at all times. Ladies are not to wear low cut tops. Shorts must also be at the appropriate length. You will be sent back to your room to change clothes if your clothing is deemed inappropriate by the band directors or head chaperones. Students are not allowed to switch room assignments.
