Welcome Help for jobseekers Welcome to the latest issue of Heart of Harrow our newsletter for residents of central Harrow, west Kenton and Wealdstone. As debate rages in Haringey about what good development means in the 21st century we here in Harrow are quite clear. This Council is building Homes for Harrow People. Our residents who are looking for somewhere to live will get the first chance at everything we build flats and houses, to rent or to buy. That s a promise. I especially hope to see you at the consultations for Poets Corner, the redevelopment of the current civic centre site, later this month. We ve been working hard to wring every penny out of this development so it offers as much affordable housing, parking and investment value back to taxpayers as it can. Cllr Sachin Shah Leader of Harrow Council Dozens of jobseekers have landed interviews or pursued training after attending our Xcite Employment and Training Fair. Nearly 200 people came to the event making it our most successful council jobs fair to date. They chatted to employers, took part in workshops on everything from start-up advice and money management, and got tips from CV advisors on standing out from the crowd. They join the 250 residents Xcite, the Council s employment project, has supported into work in the last nine months, of whom more than 100 are working on local construction sites. If you are looking for work call Xcite on 020 8416 8192 or email xcite@harrow.gov.uk. TwoWindow Shop We ve teamed up with London Business Partnership, a business support and advice organisation in Harrow, to launch the TwoWindow Shop project. The scheme gives entrepreneurs a space to display their products in town centre shopfronts. So far, 7 retailers in Wealdstone and Harrow town centres have committed to sharing their window shopfronts with local entrepreneurs. 12 new start-ups, ranging from cake-makers, Community safety meeting sculptors and artists, will take part and occupy window space with the participating businesses. Feedback from participating businesses has been positive with increased footfall, sales and overall greater publicity on both sides. If you would like to showcase your startup in a Harrow shop window, or are willing to open up your shop to budding entrepreneurs, email info@londonbp.co.uk Wednesday 28 February l 6.30pm l Harrow Civic Centre, Members Lounge, First floor, Station Road, HA1 2XL Find out what the Safer Harrow Partnership is doing to tackle community safety issues in your area specifically central and South Harrow, Wealdstone and Rayners Lane. We plan to continue engaging with the community and other potential users of the building to ensure it fulfils its purpose as an asset to Wealdstone and the borough Wealdstone Project Designs submitted After a year of design work and extensive engagement with local residents and community groups, the design team have submitted a planning application for the proposal to move the Civic Centre to Wealdstone. Our plans for the new building include a more efficient, compact work space for the Council, a customer service hub and new democratic spaces. The plan also includes outline proposals for a replacement temple, and detailed proposals for car parking and improvements to the surrounding streets, complementing the improvements taking place at nearby Wealdstone Square, and opening the route towards Byron Quarter. Significant work has taken place to design the building to become a distinctive part of Wealdstone, bringing much-needed investment and footfall into the area. We plan to continue engaging with the community and other potential users of the building to ensure it fulfils its purpose as an asset to Wealdstone and the borough.
