ENGINEERING SUPPORT@IC PolyU IC is a Technical Library equipped with a complete collection of engineering facilities, equipment and technologies for staff and students to realize their research and project activities. It is the only establishment of its kind among the local 8 UGC-funded universities. We don t just possess a collection of engineering facilities and equipment but also a pool of expertise in different engineering disciplines. Many students have made the best use of our facilities and expertise to pursue and realize their engineering innovations, research or even business ideas. Likewise you will also find academics and researchers making use of IC s facilities and expertise in pursuing and realizing their R&D projects and scholarly activities. We don t just offer technical help but also valuable advice or even networking. IC has supported and realized many successful research projects, including Sampling and Packing System (SSPS) for Chang e-5 Lunar Probe, Camera Pointing System (CPS) for Chang e-3 Lunar Probe and Soil Preparation System (SOPSYS) for Phobos-Grunt Mission in collaboration with PolyU ISE, Novel Brain Training Device for Stroke Patient in collaboration with PolyU BME, 3D Printed Surgical Guides in collaboration with local medical schools and hospitals. IC also extended its engineering support to the industry and the community. Some of the examples include Air Traffic Control Console Improvement Study in collaboration with HKSAR Civil Aviation Novel Brain Training Device for Stroke Patient SOPSYS for Phobos-Grunt Mission Department (CAD), Acid Deposition Monitoring Network in collaboration with HKSAR Environmental Protection Department (EPD), Mobile Detrainment Ladder for MTR and Novel Multiple-axis Machining of Turbine Blades in collaboration with Hong Kong Aero Engine Services Limited (HAESL). 2

SUPPORT SERVICE FOR STUDENTS Undergraduate or postgraduate students who undertake student projects, assignments, FYP, incubation or other curricular activities can approach IC for technical consultation, fabrication, manufacturing or engineering support. FREE TECHNICAL CONSULTATION Simply approach an individual workshop and consult the technical staff. If you are not sure of the appropriate workshop to approach, please contact staff under Technical Services Stream at Room W401e. FABRICATION & MANUFACTURING SUPPORT Step 1 Approach individual workshop to apply for facilities booking. If you are not sure which facility will be the best for your needs, approach our staff under Technical Services Stream for advice. Step 2 Complete IC Form IC-T01 Request for IC Facilities/Service (for undergraduate students) or IC-T02 Request for R&D and Postgraduate Project Support and return it to the workshop staff for confirmation. Forms are available from IC Student Enquiry Counter (Room W309), workshops and IC website (Student Corner Download Section). Step 3 If students bring in the materials they require, they complete the fabrication or manufacturing work at the workshop using their own materials during the time slot they reserved. Step 4 If students use materials provided by IC, they will be asked to settle the material charge payment at IC Student Enquiry Counter (Room W309) using IC Form IC-T21 Official Receipt - Sales to Student. The form is available from workshops, IC Student Enquiry Counter or IC Sore Office (Room W004d). Step 5 Job complete. 4
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: Do I need to pay for the service? A: Except for services using expensive tooling and consumables such as laser cutting, EDM wires, RP resins, most of the services rendered by IC to students are free of charge. Q: Do I need to pay for the materials? A: If you bring your own materials for fabrication and manufacturing, we will not charge for your materials. If you use our workshop materials, a charge will be imposed. Solar Car (Competition) PolyU FENG students Q: Do I need to do the fabrication or manufacturing? What if I don t know how to do it? A: Students who have undertaken IC hands-on learning activities should be able to do most of the fabrication or manufacturing. If students have not undertaken IC hands-on learning activities before, we can also offer a fabrication and manufacturing service. A charge will be imposed for such services. Vacuum-formed Modularized Shell CUHK Architecture students Q: I don t know which process, technology, equipment and material will be the best for my project. Can anyone offer advice to me? A: Our technical staff are able to offer you advice on which process, technology, equipment and material to use. Approach our Technical Services Stream directly to seek for advice. Star Wars Land for HK Disneyland PolyU FENG students Q: Can I come for service after day-time class, office hours or during Saturday, Sunday and holidays? A: IC workshops and facilities are open from Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.00pm and closed on Saturday, Sunday and public holidays. Students who have urgent and special needs may approach individual workshops to check the possibility of working after office hours and/or on holidays. Final Year Project PolyU ITC student 5
SUPPORT SERVICE FOR DEPARTMENTS Departments who undertake research, scholarly and consultancy projects and studies can approach IC for technical consultation, design, fabrication and manufacturing support. DESIGN, FABRICATION & MANUFACTURING SUPPORT Step 1 Complete IC Form IPU-015 Departmental Project/Job Requisition and return to our Technical Services Stream at Room W401e for feasibility study of the requested work. The form should be approved/endorsed by the project supervisor concerned. The form is available from Room W401e or IC website (Student Corner Download Section). Step 2 Our Technical Services Stream will issue a quotation to the department if the job or work is feasible and can be undertaken by IC. If not, the requisition will be declined. Both the cost and delivery lead time will be clearly stated on the quotation. Step 3 Department confirms the quotation by signing it and returning it to our Technical Services Stream within 4 weeks from the date of issue. Step 4 The design/fabrication/manufacturing is undertaken by IC. Step 5 Technical Services Stream informs the department to collect the product when it is ready. A delivery note is issued to the department upon the receipt of the product. Step 6 An invoice will be sent to the department. The department should sign and return the invoice to our Technical Services Stream within two weeks from the date of issue. Payment is settled via inter-departmental transfer by Finance Office. Step 7 Job complete. 6
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Q: Why does the project supervisor need to approve the job requisition? A: Approval by project supervisor is required to confirm: 1) it is a departmental project/activity; 2) the project supervisor fully understands and accepts the job requisition given to IC; and 3) the department will be responsible for the cost and liability, if any, (e.g. intellectual property) incurred. Camera Pointing System for Chang e Lunar Exploration Mission Q: Are there any charges on the job? A: Yes. The charges and delivery lead time will be clearly stated on the quotation. Q: How long is the delivery lead time? A: It varies greatly from job to job and also depends on our teaching activities loading at a particular time. Prior consultation with our Technical Services Stream would help to clarify the delivery lead time and give you a better planning on your project or research. Rebuild of clothes design by laser cutting PolyU Institute of Textiles & Clothing Q: Is the service limited to departmental projects/ activities only? Can an individual staff ask for such service for his/her personal interest? A: Supporting students and departments is our top priority. Individual staff can also ask for our service for his/her personal interest if our time and resources allow us to do so.
