STERILE SERVICES CLINICAL EXCELLENCE IN OPERATING THEATRES Surgical interventions by their very nature pose a serious risk to the patient. We work in partnership with our customers to both improve the patient s experience and reduce operational risks through our integrated solutions. Our products promote good practice in the operating theatre and have been crafted alongside protocols developed by key organisations such as the Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP), The International Federation of Perioperative Nurses (IFPN) and Association of perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN), guiding clinicians on best practice. With over 40 years of clinical expertise, we re committed to working in partnership with operating theatres to develop solutions for operating theatres and give our customers the assurance that the products they re using are of the highest quality and from a trusted supplier. 3

SWABS AND GAUZE Made from the hightest quality materials, Detex X-Ray Detectable Swabs and Sofsorb Non-Woven Swabs are leading brands in the UK. Operating theatres in the UK and globally have been using them for over 40 years. Together, with our specialist ranges, including pledgets, throat packs and gauze packing rolls, we offer one of the most comprehensive ranges of gauze and non-woven products on the market. DETEX X-RAY DETECTABLE SWABS Four decades of constant improvement and innovation make this X-Ray detectable swab range one of the most effective for today s surgical teams. With features in packaging materials, traceability and special fold, the Detex range provides the scrub practitioner with the optimum solution. n Double wrapped in line with aseptic opening practice to minimise contamination n Unique removable 3-part traceability labels on outer wrap maximises patient safety n Swabs recognisable on all commonly used X-Ray media including plain X-Ray film and Image Intensifier Fluoroscopy* n All manufactured to BP and EN 14079 standards n Assures consistent quality of thread construction, absorbency and weight n Low linting, soft and highly absorbent for increased effectiveness n All taped swabs folded with tapes visible for ease and speed of counting n Extensive choice of sizes satisfies most surgical requirements from one supplier n All swabs quality controlled for weight and metal detection to minimise risk and ensure patient safety *Image Intensifier exercise undertaken at two large teaching hospitals in the UK 4

SOFSORB NON-WOVEN SWABS Sofsorb provides a soft close fibre construction swab with efficient wet friction, ideal for debriding and cleansing of surface wounds. Virtually lint free, Sofsorb provides excellent conformability and thermal insulation making it the ideal solution for wound dressings and conforms to EN 1644. PLAIN GAUZE SWABS Synergy Health plain gauze swabs are constructed from 100% cotton and are ideal for use in skin cleansing and debridement. SPECIALIST SWABS Our extensive specialist swabs offers solutions for a wide range of procedures with the assurance that they re constructed to the same quality standards as Detex and Sofsorb. The range includes; n Throat packs X-Ray detectable and available in paediatric and adult sizes. n Fast Edge Ribbon Gauze (FERG) for use in packing deep wounds. n Tampons X-Ray detectable and suitable for maternity and surgical use. n Pledgets X-Ray detectable, available in 3 sizes and in swab-safe holders to encourage best practice. With patient safety and risk management in mind, all our Detex, gauze and specialist swabs are manufactured to Synergy Health specifications, meeting BP 14079 and European Standards EN 14079. 5

PROCEDURE PACKS Our Procedure Packs meet the clinical user s needs for singleuse components in one sterile pack and provide a convenient way of managing surgical and ward interventions. Surgical and ward interventions involve and element of risk. Surgical Site Infections (SSI) and Healthcare Associated Infections (HCAIs) are a serious threat causing unnecessary suffering to the patient and increased costs to the care provider. PROCEDURE PACKS Our Procedure Packs can help clinical users to reduce the risk of SSIs and HCAIs. As well as helping to reduce waste, set up time and storage needs in order to deliver cost efficiencies. n All components for a procedure are presented in a single, sterile pack n Reduce the risk of patients developing an SSI or HCAI n Reduce the risk of cross contamination n Standardise procedures and working practices n Promotes the use of aseptic technique n Provides maximum sterility in non-sterile environments The introduction of Procedure Packs has been proven to reduce procurement costs by 76%, and releases time that would be spent setting up the procedure, to time spent with the patient. 6 Catheterisation pack It is estimated that each year within the NHS, one in ten hospital patients will be affected by a HCAI costing the UK taxpayer 1billion per year. 1,2 It is also estimated that up to 30% of HCAIs could be avoided with good practice and careful hygiene. 3 Infection may also occur by the introduction of bacteria by person-to-person contact or from microbes on medical devices. 1,4,5 IV lines have been identified as being responsible for introducing over 60% of blood infections that account for approximately 6% of all HCAIs. 1 6

Here are just a few: n Suture removal n Wound cleansing n Maternity n Polyware and bowls n Catheterisation n Peripheral IV cannulation n Vaginal examination (VE) n Mid-stream Specimen of Urine (MSU) n Sterile supplementaries n Renal dialysis n Oral hygiene n Eye care Wound care pack IV pack 7

ENDOSCOPIC TISSUE RETRIEVAL Our Bert bags for endoscopic retrieval of tissue have been developed alongside the advance of minimally invasive surgery and can prove invaluable in all types of laparoscopic procedures. The range is constructed from medical grade rip-stop nylon, with a polyurethane inner coating. This fabric, coupled with stitched and welded reinforced seams gives security and strength to aid smooth removal of tissue. BERT Impervious Bert bags for endoscopic retrieval of tissue are manufactured using medical grade rip-stop nylon with a polyurethane inner coating, reducing the risk of fluids leaking into the body cavity. Strong Tear resistant rip- stop nylon permits surgical manipulation during the procedure without the risk of the bag tearing. Safe Toxicologically tested, nickel and latex free and X-Ray detectable with patient traceability labels for patient safety. A blue identification tag indicates the angled opening to further aid specimen retrieval, while the tapered design not only minimises tissue bunching but also encourages automatic bag closure upon extraction. Bert bags can all be used with standard laparoscopic instrumentation, requiring no special introducers, opening or closing devices. Our range of Bert bags are manufactured within our state of the art cleanroom facilities in the UK, undergo rigorous quality testing and have been toxicologically tested to standard BS EN ISO 10993 (Biological Evaluation of Medical Devices). Nubert allows for the fast and easy removal of the gallbladder at laparoscopy, reducing the risk of lost stones and bile contamination. The strength of the bag allows tissue to be removed, often without enlargement of the port site. I consider the routine use of Nubert to be good surgical practice. Mr Rory McCloy, Consultant HPS Surgeon Formerly of Manchester Royal Infirmary. 8
