May 2018 LEGION NEWS SAN LUIS OBISPO POST 66 COMMANDER S CORNER Legion Family: April was a busy month with one Wednesday night dinner and the annual Scholarship Awards Dinner. Our Monday night Socials have been a great time to gather, watch sports and have a $5.00 dinner. The Vietnam Memorial, THE WALL THAT HEALS, was on display through April 1. The Veterans Resource Fair, held at Cuesta College was a success for several hundred Veterans and our Post signed up 9 new members. Your representatives of the American Legion Riders, attended the ALR Convention. You should be receiving your annual Pancake Breakfast tickets in the mail shortly. Please, please support your Post on our only fundraiser that we put on each year! I send in $50 and give the tickets to families with children in the neighborhood. It is so good to see your neighbors when they come in for breakfast and find out what the American Legion is all about. Monday, May 28th, is Memorial Day. Post 66 will once again put out flags at the cemeteries on Saturday morning and on Monday we put on the 11:00 AM ceremony at San Luis Obispo Cemetery. Please come out to support this event and watch the Fly Over. COMMANDER DAN ADJUTANT MESSAGE July 1st is the beginning of the 2018 Legion year, so you will begin getting notices from the American Legion about renewing membership. You have some payment options as always, if you are of the computer world the easiest is to go to MyLegion.org and pay online. You can send a check with your renewal notice or there is the ever-popular cash at the Post. This year s membership dues are still $45.00. POST EVERLASTING G NEIL HOVIS MEMBERSHIP REPORT For the 2018 membership year we currently have 449 paid members, which means we have 101 unpaid members. I challenge each of you to recruit a new member this year. We all know of fellow Veterans out there who would make excellent Legion members. Bring them to a dinner or a Monday night social and let s show them what we are about. If you need a Legion name tag please call the Post and leave the information or call me 440-1551. If you are one of the 101 unpaid members you should have been contacted by our membership team as a reminder to pay your dues. Your 2017 membership is no longer valid. Please send your 2018 dues in ASAP. If you have a 2018 member s card and are still getting stuff from National disregard it. If in doubt call me. NEW LEGION MEMBERS John Cascamo, Air Force Gulf Jim Mikkelson, Navy Vietnam Charles Russell, Marines Lebanon/Granada If you know of any WW2 or Korean War Vets, encourage them to sign up for Honor Flight. It costs the Veteran nothing and if you would like to go as a Guardian you need to sign up. Guardian s cost is $1,500.00. To sign up go to honorflightccc@gmail.com. Timing is critical for our WW2 Vets. The Veterans History Project tells the Veterans story. The Library of Congress is collecting and preserving stories of men and women from all branches of the service who served during the Wars. The Veteran is interviewed for about an hour and receives a copy of the DVD and a copy is sent to the Library of Congress. If you know of a Veterans story you think should be told or your story should be told, contact the Central Coast Veterans Memorial Museum 805-543-1763 for more information. Yes that is the place right across the parking lot from the Post. If you have never stopped for a visit you are missing some great local history. Legion year 2019, which starts 1 July, begins the Centennial of the American Legion and Post 66. We have Centennial challenge coins and hat pins for sale at the Post. You can buy them on dinner nights or a Monday night at the Post. If that is not possible please e-mail the Post or call the Adjutant 805-440-1551. Coins are $10 and hat pins $5. If you have any questions or looking to help out at the Post let me know. RICH POWELL, POST ADJUTANT KEEP THE FAITH SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION, SQUADRON 66 Greetings Sons and friends!
