Believe You Can Achieve Iowa Educational Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired Spring Family Conference March 31 - April 1, 2017 Iowa Braille School Campus 1002 G Avenue, Vinton, IA 52349 Lauren J. Lieberman is currently a professor at the State University of New York at Brockport in the area of Adapted Physical Education. She is also the undergraduate coordinator of the Adapted Physical Education Concentration and Director of Camp Abilities: a developmental sports camp for children with visual impairments. Before attending graduate school, Lauren taught in the Deafblind program at the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown, MA. On Friday afternoon from 1:00 p.m.-4:30 p.m., Lauren will work with team members to understand the importance of providing appropriate physical education experiences from an early age. Professionals are encouraged to participate in this event to learn with parents about strategies for physical activities. Providing physical education promotes underlying skills for all children. Skills in the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) such as independence, self-determination, orientation and mobility, recreation, and social skills are reinforced as children learn to make choices of physical activities. All team members and families are invited to participate in this opportunity for learning about the importance of physical activity and choice-making at all ages and stages of life. Universally Designed Activities will be set up in the recreation building to demonstrate strategies for instruction. Professionals are invited to attend both days of the conference to learn about strategies for working with the children you serve as well as collaborating with family members on the inclusion of physical education and other areas of the Expanded Core Curriculum.

Throughout the conference you will have the opportunity to learn from a variety of parents and professionals. They will share individual experiences as well as some practical tips for making life a little bit smoother. You will gain information about living, working and playing in the community to improve quality of life. Strategies and resources to infuse recreation and physical activity throughout the life span will be highlighted in sessions. Professionals will share resources to support the educational process. Parents will share personal experiences, siblings and the blind and visually impaired youth will have an opportunity to interact and learn from each other as well. Join the fun starting with activities on Friday afternoon as we renew relationships and make some new ones! Arrive as soon as you can to join in the activities. Friday, March 31 All activities will take place in the Recreation Building. Noon 1:00 p.m. Registration in Recreation Building 12:30 p.m. 4:45 p.m. Childcare provided on second floor of Old Main Building 1:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Teams work with Lauren Lieberman; Ann Griffin, Adapted Physical Education Consultant; Carla Morrow, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) Activities will be set up in the recreation building to demonstrate Universally Designed Instruction. Team members will participate in activities to learn about what Adapted Physical Education is and is not. Equipment and strategies for motor skills, fitness, sports, and recreation will be included. Resources will be shared. 4:30 p.m. Pick up your children from childcare 5:00 p.m. 6:00 p.m. Dinner served in Dining Room of Old Main Building 6:30 p.m. 8:00 p.m. Aquatics Program in the Recreation Building, (Swimming Pool) Lauren will lead swimming instruction and strategies for parents to teach the visually impaired child swimming skills. Carla Morrow, Ann Griffin, and others will assist. She will share assessments for children with visual impairments. Participants will learn about programming for physical education. Training support staff will be included. She will address placement in APE, how to include PE and recreation into the IEP, and how PE is included in the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC). 10:00 a.m. - 10:15 am Break 10:15 a.m. - 11:30 am APH Products: Lauren Lieberman and Monica Turner Monica and Lauren will showcase products available from the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) which may be purchased with quota money for children with visual impairments, deafblindness, including children with multiple impairments. These items are available for student instruction and use when ordered by Teachers of the Visually Impaired who serve the children. The Federal Act to Promote the Education of the blind was enacted by Congress in 1879. This act is a means for providing adapted educational materials to eligible students who meet the definition of blindness. Professionals Session facilitated by Lauren Lieberman in the Auditorium of Old Main Lauren will address assessment in physical activity, training of support staff, new APH curriculum, and modification to the general physical education curriculum. She will share resources and sport opportunities with United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA). Dads Session - facilitated by Brook Nolin Brook is married to Kashia and the father of Brandon, Allison, Matthew, and Zachary (who is blind). Brook maintains the Facebook page Iowa Blind and Visually Impaired Children s Support Group. Brook has been active in educating and reaching out to families to make the world a better place for all children. Moms Session - facilitated by Stacy Simmons and Kashia Nolin Please complete the enclosed session form titled Mothers Group and return with your registration. This will help focus the session content. During this session you will have an opportunity to talk with other mothers who may have experienced something you are going through. Please come prepared to share helpful strategies you have tried as well as questions you may have for teaching your child. This will be an opportunity to learn from one another. Stacy is married to Dan and the mother of Klair, Ali, and Kyle (who is visually impaired). Kashia is married to Brook and the mom of Brandon, Allison, Matthew, and Zachary (who is blind). Siblings Session - facilitated by Brandon and Allison Nolin Brandon and Allison are siblings to Zachary. They will share some of the joys and challenges of being a sibling to a brother that is blind. They will share some of their experiences and help you share some of your experiences as well. Peer Group Session - facilitated by Kyla Billington and Alex Gillaspie Kyla graduated from high school in May 2016. She is currently enrolled at the Orientation Center with the Department for the Blind in Des Moines. Alex will graduate from Marion High School in May 2017. They will share some strengths and challenges of growing up blind. CrossFit Training with Bettina Dolinsek in Room 119 As a mainstreamed blind student Bettina was encouraged either not to participate fully in sports or to do alternative sports. While employed at the Iowa Department for the Blind, she co-chaired the Employee Health and Wellness Committee and was invited to join CrossFit workouts. Bettina will share her journey of becoming an athlete and Level 1 CrossFit trainer in July of 2013. She will share tips and tricks for working out that have helped her compete alongside sighted peers in CrossFit. 3:45 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. - General Session Panel of Young Adults with Blindness facilitated by Lauren Lieberman - Auditorium Panel members will share experiences participating in general physical education curriculum. They will also share experiences of participating in athletics and extracurricular activities. Many of the participants have participated in The North Central Association of Schools for the Blind (NCASB) competitions for the Iowa Rams, including goalball, swimming and wrestling. 5:00 p.m. Evaluations and wrap-up 5:00 pm Pick up your children from childcare 5:15 p.m. Childcare closes 5:30 p.m. Box lunches will be available outside the Dining Room. You are welcome to eat them in the Dining Room or take them with you. *Lauren will be available for discussions following the event. Hotel Rooms: General Information A block of rooms has been set aside at a group rate of $85 at Cobblestone Inn and Suites, 1202 West 11th St, Vinton, IA. You must make your own room reservations. Call 319-472- 2220 and ask for a room for the Iowa Braille School Spring Conference. Room reservations need to be made before March 14, 2017. This is a small hotel, so book your rooms early! Meals: All meals will be provided for conference attendees. Stipends: Stipend checks will be mailed to parents following the conference. For those parents living within 50 miles of Vinton, the stipend will be $50 per day (maximum $100) and for those parents living further than 50 miles from Vinton, the stipend will be $100 per day (maximum $200). You will be required to sign an attendance sheet each day to receive the daily stipend.

Childcare: Childcare is a service provided to encourage young families to attend sessions while knowing their children are in a safe environment. Your child can NOT be left in childcare without completing the enclosed Childcare Information Form. Parent(s) are responsible for medication administration. Respite care workers are welcome in the childcare area as additional support for your child. If a child displays behavior that is disruptive or poses a threat to the safety of other children or volunteer workers, parents will be requested to remove the child from childcare. Childcare will be available Friday afternoon and Saturday on a first come, first served basis. Limit of 30 children under age 12. Register early! There will be supervised activities for children over the age of 12 who are independent in personal cares in a separate area. Please provide information about these children as well in the enclosed Childcare Information Form, so activities and staffing can be arranged. Friday evening aquatic instruction is designed for the child that has blindness and the adult caregiver. Lauren will share methods on how to teach your child swimming skills (including aquatics resources.) Please bring swimsuits, life jackets, swim diapers, and floaties. Activities will be provided in the recreation building for other family members. On Saturday, childcare will be closed from 11:45 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., so children can eat lunch with their parents. If you put your child (ren) in childcare, they must stay with their childcare group until picked up by a parent, unless other arrangements are made between parents and the childcare director. Please mark your child s name on any items they bring, including canes, to the childcare room. Please bring any adapted eating/drinking utensils your child uses. A pack and play or playpen, high chair, or booster seat is recommended for younger children. If your child does not eat table food, please bring their food. Please include a phone number where you can be reached during the conference in case your child needs your assistance. The enclosed Childcare Information Form must be completed with registration to adequately staff for children s needs.
