Historical Over View of Nursing According to Islamic information about Nursing it is said Hazrat Muhammad (May peace be upon him) permitted Hazrat Ruafaida to take care of injured soldiers during war. So she prepared a group of ladies to take care of and as the regards of her services she was called first nurse in nursing history. 2
Cont According to Christian history some nuns of middle age in church felt the pain of their sick church fellows and they came in the field of providing care which was encouraged by many others so this association became useful for community and when it was organized was named nursing. 3
Florence Nightingale Era: She was born on May 12, 1820 at Florence in Italy and was named for that city. Her father gave her higher education. She could read and write in Italian, French and German. From early age when she was a baby she nursed the animals but at the age of nine she decided to be useful person for sick human being. As she was very religious so she may have this idea from nuns. 4
Lady o the Lamp As the historians has written she used to had her private round holding a little lamp in her hand so she was awarded with the title of lady of lamp. She opened a school of nursing with the title Florence Nightingale school of nursing in 1860. So she was called founder of modern Nursing. She died in August 1910 at the age of ninety. 5
Development perspective for nurses: (Before Partition) There were three main training institutions of nursing before partition where proper nursing training was started. 6
Civil Hospital Karachi: One of the oldest hospitals who offered nursing training in civil hospital Karachi. It offered nursing training in 1935. It was affiliated to Bombay Registration Act in 1939. 7
Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar: It was general hospital consisting of 372 beds. It offered nursing training for both male and female. It was affiliated with Punjab Nursing Council and Midwife Board 8
Mayo Hospital Lahore: It was the largest school of nursing. At the time of partition there was only one Muslim Nurse named Aulia Begum and she was associated with this hospital. This school was running with the collaboration of Lady Atchison Hospital. 9
Development perspective for nurses: (After Partition) After 1947 Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah, Begum Raana Liaquat Ali Khan and some other prominent women came in the field to encourage the other women to nurse refugee brother who were sick and injured. 10
1st Course Lady Assistant: On Preliminary basis title of Lady Assistant was created to meet the situation. Criteria for this training was middle and period of training two weeks practical course in elementary nursing procedures. 2nd Course Auxiliary Nurses Scheme: To meet the requirement of nursing another scheme was launched through which majority of women were invited in profession and this scheme was named Auxiliary Nurses Scheme. 11
The evaluation of an Organizational Structure Before 1950s Administration remained on ad-hoc basis 1984: Punjab Nursing Council was organized Mrs. Tiffany May was first registrar of Punjab Nursing Council The Sindh Nursing Council and NWFP Midwives Boards was also came into being. Nursing Council was also formed in East Pakistan 1952: PNC Act 1952 was passed a uniform system was passed for Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors 12
Cont 1954: The Post of chief Nursing Superintendent was created in the Directorate of Health. Mrs. Salma Tareen was first CNS in Punjab. 1961: The Post of CNS was re-designed as section Officer (Nursing) and Mrs. Salma Tareen continued the post till 1962. 1973: Provincial Nursing Council was dissolved and replaced with Pakistan nursing council. 13
