School Information Pack @wallabies2019

WELCOME For 35 years Hospice Isle of Man has been an integral part of our Island s community. In this special year we want to thank you for the support you have given us over this time and invite you to embark on this exciting project with us, supported by Wild In Art. Our focus over the next five years is to look beyond our building, to reach out and support more people in our community in a place of their choice at the right time for them. Wallabies Gone Wild provides the perfect opportunity for us to work collaboratively with our community to promote compassion, raise awareness of our services and generate the funds that will help us to continue to deliver care in the community. Getting involved in the education programme will provide your school with an opportunity to work with local artists, explore the Island s culture, engage with local businesses and work with us to develop life skills such as resilience and compassion amongst your staff and students. We look forward to working with you on this collaboration.

TELL ME MORE... Wallabies Gone Wild is a mass participation art event that will be held on the Island over 12 weeks from May to September 2019. During this time the Isle of Man will be brought to life by a mob of beautifully designed wallaby sculptures. The event will not only offer endless hours of fun for residents and visitors but will create community cohesion, and will have a positive impact on all those involved. The event will: Provide a free and engaging activity that appeals to all and creates excitement within the community. Create a platform for Hospice Isle of Man to work with local schools to deliver an education programme that encourages compassion and builds resilience within our community. Attract visitors to the Island. Increase footfall and spend across the Island amongst visitors and residents. Engage local artists to showcase the Island s heritage, architecture and culture. Provide an opportunity for businesses, their employees and customers to engage with schools, artists and the public in a unique way. Generate much-needed funds for Hospice Isle of Man through sponsorship and partnership working. About Wild in Art Wild in Art is one of the leading creative producers of mass-appeal public art events that bring together business and creative sectors with schools and local communities through the creation of citywide trails of uniquely painted sculptures. Since 2008, Wild in Art has delivered over 40 events across 4 continents including; London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic mascot trails, Go Superlambananas! for Liverpool Capital of Culture 08, Mali in the City as part of Melbourne Zoo s 150th anniversary, the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, plus art trails for Historic Royal Palaces and Penguin Random House. Individual trails have been followed by nearly 1 million people and in the last three years alone had an economic impact of over 46 million. Wild in Art events have: Enabled over 10m to be raised for charitable causes through auctions Injected 1.7m into local creative communities Engaged over 500,000 young people in learning programmes Helped millions of people of all ages to experience art in non-traditional settings www.wildinart.co.uk

WALLABABIES GONE WILD EDUCATION PROGRAMME Integral to the main event will be the schools education programme, open to all schools on the Island. Each school involved will be given their own medium sized wallaby sculpture to design, which will then go on display during the trail and will be returned to the school to keep afterwards. The schools exhibition will last the duration of the main public art event and will add real value to the Wallabies gone Wild Trail. This will be a great opportunity for your school to showcase the creativity of your students and will create a treasured legacy of your involvement for future generations. How it works Each participating school will receive a blank wallaby sculpture accompanied by an Education Resource Pack that is linked to the national curriculum. The pack puts creativity at the heart of a programme of study, designed to complement key stage specific teaching for numerous subjects. Central to this pack is our Compassionate Communities Programme, which will include resources and training opportunities that will enable teachers and school staff to address issues surrounding bereavement in a sensitive and age appropriate way. We will also help develop key life skills such as resilience and compassion and provide opportunity for your students, teachers and parents to get directly involved in some of our community-centred projects.

HOW IT WORKS PHASE 1 Schools and community groups are invited to sign up to the education programme. Businesses are invited to sign up as event partners, supporters or sponsors. Artists, both well-known and undiscovered, are invited to submit sculpture designs. PHASE 2 The education programme will start to be delivered to schools that have signed up. Artists will present their unique sculpture designs to key partners and sculpture sponsors, who will then be matched appropriately. PHASE 3 Schools will customise their sculptures and the schools exhibition will be planned. The main trail route will be planned whilst the artists get to work customising their sculptures. PHASE 4 The schools exhibition will open to the public. At least 25 wallaby sculptures will go on display through the streets and public spaces of the Island from May - August 2019. During this time there will be increased PR, media and marketing activity including a dedicated app, website, printed literature and merchandise. PHASE 5 A farewell event will be arranged where the wallabies will be brought together for a period of a few days for those who are unable to complete the trail. The large wallabies will then take centre stage and go to auction, to raise funds for Hospice Isle of Man. The medium wallabies will be returned to the schools involved.

WHY YOU SHOULD GET INVOLVED The education programme will seek to celebrate young peoples creativity and offers a platform to showcase artwork The project will help to meet educational targets within your school as it ties in to the national curriculum Children and young people will be given an opportunity to experiment with different art forms using creativity to meet core curriculum objectives Your school will develop links and strategic education partnerships Families will be encouraged to explore their Island and engage with the arts, cultural sites and green spaces of the Isle of Man You will become champions for creating a compassionate community on the Island The difficult subject of loss and bereavement will be explored in a sensitive and safe manner It will generate magical PR opportunities demonstrating your school s active role in the community All participating schools will receive: A blank medium wallaby sculpture approx. 83cm tall x 33cm wide A creative, cross-curricular, key-stage appropriate (KS1-3) programme of study with links to national curriculum including multiple teaching aides and resources that will encourage creative thinking Attendance for two members of staff at our bereavement information and training sessions due to be held in November 2018 and March 2019 at Hospice Isle of Man Resources to link class activities to key health and wellbeing learning opportunities, contributing to your PSHE objectives A dedicated local artist who can help and advise on the customisation of your wallaby Opportunity to become actively involved in delivering compassionate community projects across the Island

HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED To help Hospice to raise as much income as possible to support our patients and their families, we ask that each school pledges to raise 1,000 over a 12 month period from the date of application. Fundraising Ideas We will be on hand to support you with fundraising ideas and have a few examples below: MAKE CREATE INSPIRE MOVE OTHER Design, decorate and sell wallaby themed cookies and cakes in either a school wide bake off or a bake sale Textile work, make your own wallaby cushion/artwork and sell Wallaby inspired art exhibition, selling off the art to parents at a fundraising evening Pop up tuck shop to encourage budding entrepreneurs Ask your school committee to run an event such as a quiz or disco Organise a sponsored event such as a walk, run or wallaby hop Hold a scavenger hunt Hold a dress down day The key is to make fundraising accessible to all! How does Fundraising benefit young people? Fundraising can help develop a young person s self-esteem by: Increasing their confidence Giving them a sense of empowerment, achievement and social responsibility Building awareness to strive to make a difference in their local community Making them feel good about doing something worthwhile And perhaps most importantly of all, it s fun! In addition to the Wallabies Gone Wild Educational Resource Pack Hospice can provide: Fundraising packs Collection tins and buckets Competition ideas Sponsorship forms Balloons And lots more!
