WASSUP?? April 2014 VOLUNTEER AWARD WINNERS Volunteer of the Quarter: Darrell Rohrbeck nominated Jerry Zinger who has been selected as our Volunteer of the Quarter Award winner for January thru March 2014. Jerry has been working with us since he contributed to the fabrication of the top gun turret on the A/B-26 then worked on the A/B-26 engine detailing restoration. He helped fabricate parts for the F-89 Scorpion and played a major role in the rebuild and restoration of the large-scale F-16 model and the LINK trainer. Jerry has become our expert on plugging holes in our display aircraft to keep insects, birds, and critters from making their homes in our displays. Jerry is dependable and a great guy to work with. Thanks for all your help Jerry we really appreciate it. Team Chiefs are reminded that nominations for the Volunteer of the Quarter awards should be submitted to Lou Nigro no later than the 15 th day of March, June, September, and December. If no one is nominated, a Volunteer of the Quarter award will not be made. NEW VOLUNTEERS We continue to be blessed with new people volunteering their time to help us here at the Museum. Since the last issue of the WASSUP, we ve added the following: Michael Young, a US Army Vietnam veteran who now works for the City of Port Huron. Mike has a real job so with his availability and interests, he s a perfect fit for our weekend Host Team. Mike lives in Port Huron and officially joined us on 18 February 2014. Mike s hobbies include bicycle riding, hiking, and helping veteran s organizations. Thanks for joining us Mike you ll be a real asset to our operation. And we promise not to hold the fact that you re a friend of Bob Kozloff against you.

LONG TERM MUSEUM VOLUNTEERS ACCESS CARDS For those who do not use a Government ID card to access the Base, your Visitors Passes expired on 31 January 2014. I sent a revised list of volunteers (and, if applicable, their spouse or, for those that don t drive yet, the person bringing them to/from the Museum) to the Base Access Control Officer on 16 December 2013. If you re wondering about the information that was submitted for you, see Lou. The AF-mandated background checks have been completed. Expect to be issued a Defense Biometric Identification System (DBIDs) card rather than the paper pass previously issued. When you come thru the Gate with your new DBIDS card, just show them that card, they ll scan the bar code on the back, and you ll be on your way. REMEMBER that: (1) Only the persons on the validated list will be issued a DBIDS card and allowed access to the Base. (2) If your spouse may need unescorted access to the Base to drop you off or pick you up, he/she will need to get their own DBIDS card. As a reminder, DBIDS cards are issued at the Vehicle Registration desk in the Visitor s Center north of the Main Gate adjacent to our Main Gate at the intersection of M-59 and Jefferson Avenue. Their hours are from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm on Monday and from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm on Tuesday thru Saturday. They are closed on Sundays and Federal holidays and they close for one hour on Saturday for lunch. I would recommend that you call before you try to get your pass, regardless of the day you plan to arrive, as they frequently close for an assortment of reasons and their lunch hour on Saturday varies depending on the workload. Their phone number is 586-239-6849. The DBIDS cards requested on 16 December 2013 will expire on 31 July 2014. An updated list of Museum volunteers, spouses, and drivers will be sent to Security in early June 2014 requesting the cards be renewed to show an expiration date of 31 January 2015. DBIDS cards have been requested solely for participation in Museum activities, the performance of Museum business at other on-base locations, and transportation to/from on-base eating establishments. Use of the pass for other reasons is not authorized. SELFRIDGE GOLF GATE OPEN The entrance to Selfridge off North River Road in Harrison Township, or the Golf Gate, has reopened for ID card holders only from 5:30 a.m. until 9:30 p.m. daily, and closed on federal holidays. Until scanning technology is available at that Gate, DBIDS card holders should use the Main Gate (even though some of our volunteers that have DBIDS cards have been allowed access). The Joy Road Gate, which was available during the closure of the Golf Gate, is closed. It never ends 2014 GOALS Purge our storage areas of assets that are excess to our current and future needs, a long-term and ongoing effort. Finish ongoing organization efforts in Bldg 1007. Everything in the building is now ours and we are working on deciding what is worth saving and how to divest ourselves of that which is not. Training more of our full-time volunteers on aircraft corrosion control. Cataloguing, digitizing, and filing historic photos. Finishing up some small items for the restoration of the F-89. It is almost completely restored, painted, and on display in the Air Park. A thing of beauty! The AT-6 Texan has been delivered! It has been put in Bldg 1045 (the pole barn) for assembly and painting and then will be placed to the left front of the door that leads from the Museum to the Air Park near the Mobile Tower.

SELFRIDGE AIRSHOW - 6 & 7 September 2014 Blue Angels to Headline Selfridge Open House 2/6/2014 - SELFRIDGE AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE, Mich. -- The highest-flying free airshow in the Motor City returns to the skies of Macomb County this September. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels - led by Clinton Township native Commander Tom Frosch - will headline the 2014 Selfridge Open House and Air Show at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, Mich., Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 6-7. The show will feature a wide assortment of military aircraft and equipment displays, along with a number of civilian acrobatic aerial performances. Admission to the show on the military base is free and the parking is free. Tens of thousands of visitors typically attend the show on the air base, with thousands more watching from boats on Lake St. Clair or from neighborhood viewing parties. Officials recommend arriving early to beat the traffic and spending the day on the base. Refreshments and other vendors will be available. The gates to the Open House open at 8 a.m., with flying to start late morning. The Navy Flight Demonstration Team - best known as the Blue Angels - will showcase the pride and professionalism of military aviation with aircraft performances each day of the Open House. The Blue Angels last performed at Selfridge during the base's 2005 Open House. Selfridge Air National Guard Base is home to 127th Wing of the Michigan Air National Guard, which flies both the KC-135 Stratotanker and the A-10 Thunderbolt II. The base is also home to units of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and Dept. of Homeland Security. All of the various types of aircraft assigned to the base, including several military and DHS helicopters, will be on display during the open house. Selfridge Air National Guard Base is located east of Mount Clemens along the shore of Lake St. Clair, accessible for the open house from Interstate 94 exit 241 (21 Mile Road) or exit 237 (North River Road). No camping or other overnight accommodations are permitted on the base. For more information on the Selfridge Open House, visit www.selfridgeopenhouse.com or follow the Open House on Facebook at www.facebook.com/selfridgeopenhouseandairshow

TIDBITS All of our phones and fax machines should have a DD Form 2056 (little red sticker) on them that say Do not transmit classified information over unsecured telecommunications systems. Official DoD telecommunications systems are subject to monitoring. Using DoD telecommunications systems constitutes consent to monitoring. Consider yourself notified that big brother may be monitoring phone calls and faxes sent from our Museum phones. And if you have a phone that does not have that DD Form 2056 affixed, notify me and I ll get you as many of them as you need. GOLF SHIRTS One of the ways we say thank you to our volunteers who do more than just say they want to volunteer and then either don t show up or come in one time and then leave is to provide them with a golf shirt in a size of their choice with the Museum logo and their name embroidered on it. The initial golf shirt is free. If additional or replacement shirts are needed, we ll order and mail them to you with an invoice for just our cost for the shirt(s) requested. It s hard to keep track of who wanted a shirt (some don t) and who received one already so until I hear to the contrary, I m going to assume that all of our current volunteers have already received their shirt. If my assumption is incorrect, and it probably is, please call me and we ll get it on order. A-10 parked at Selfridge ANGB

FUNCTIONAL LINK TRAINER: Our functional LINK trainer will only be operated by those trained to do so. Darrell Rohrbeck will do the training and right now we have only two people so trained (Darrell Rohrbeck & Russ Valeri). We ll have a list of authorized operators on the LINK. It is in the cockpit room with the A-7 and F-16 cockpits and will be cordoned off so guests cannot get into it unless an appointment has been made and a qualified operator is available. The non-functional LINK trainer is where the Space Shuttle model was and will be available for all guests to get into. Hopefully our weekend floater will keep an eye on it because if it gets trashed we may have to cordon it off as well. The news release announcing our 2014 season stated that the functional LINK can be operated for groups by appointment only. No appointment or no qualified operator available? The functional LINK will not be operated and guests will not be allowed inside it! AN EDITORIAL I need a place to vent. Please don t take these ramblings personally I ll say it again and keep saying it until everyone gets the word! ONLY THE CURATOR (DICK SOULES) OR THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR (THAT S ME) CAN ACCEPT A DONATION TO THE MUSEUM! Do not bring anything from your home or from others that is to be donated to the Museum unless you first come thru me or Dick! We keep getting stuff that I have to back door thru the review, acceptance and inventory process and it s getting a little old trying to figure out what happened and when after the fact. For those of you who have our Museum Master Card number memorized or on a piece of paper, it has changed! See me or call me and I ll share it with you. Although membership in our parent organization, the Michigan Air Guard Historical Association (MAGHA), is certainly not a requirement to be an Air Museum volunteer, the membership donations we receive are a significant part of our yearly income and provide us with the financial wherewithal to reimburse you for purchases you make on our behalf and to fund needed improvements to our operation. We presently have over 110 volunteers on our rolls and over 50% have chosen not to become members of MAGHA. Please consider joining our Historical Association a membership application is on the last page of this newsletter. For those of you that purchase from Grainger, we now have our own account instead of sharing the Base Supply account. Our account number is 884941782. If I sometimes seem a little frazzled or annoyed, please forgive me as I sometimes feel like I m getting ready to fall into my full plate. I can t begin to count the number of times that a conversation begins with Wouldn t it be great if we and we usually translates to me!

IN CASE YOU EVER WONDERED WHAT ALL THE LETTERS AND NUMBERS SIGNIFIED ON THE TAILS OF OUR DISPLAY AIRCRAFT. ADVISORY: THE SIZE, DATA, AND SPECIFICS INCLUDED VARY DEPENDING ON WHEN THE MARKINGS WERE APPLIED.

MUSEUM PHOTOS THEN AND NOW Here s what our Museum site looked like before we were forced to move to our present location! This photo was taken in 1962 (LH). And a more current photo of the Selfridge Museum (RH) a lot of hard work and great volunteers have made the museum what it is today--- THANKS! BASE ACCESS PROCEDURES Base access procedures have been evolving since the procedures changed about a year ago. The latest requirements are on the reverse. If you have any questions, please call Lou.
