Unit Education Officer Training MCCSSC MCRD/ERR Parris Island MCAS Beaufort
Welcome to the Unit Education Officer (UEO) Billet The following orders provide official guidance for the Voluntary Education Programs (UEOs included): MCO 1560.25 Depot Order P1560.5D MCAS Order P1560.25C
I would like to recommend some items each UEO may consider to support the Marine Corps, Depot, Station and Unit (YOUR) Voluntary Education (VolEd) program.
Education Briefs Hold a unit education brief at least once a year. Education briefs can be for the whole unit (preferred) or one section at a time. Please call local education office to set up a brief. We will work within your unit s schedule. (228-7421/2086)
Tuition Assistance (TA) The most popular program - provides service members with money for college. Units are responsible for ensuring the service member will be available the entire time frame of each class before approving TA forms. CAUTION: Service members can get in TA debt! Commands can deny TA on case by case basis. Commanding Officers must sign any TA waiver requests the unit submits. Waivers should be the exception, not the norm. Use standard format. Please see binder & call with your TA questions.
Tuition Assistance (TA) The TA application process is now Web-based. Commanding Officers designate who has their authority to approve TA applications within the command. TA applications approved by anyone not on the list of command approvers will not be processed by the Education Office Staff. The UEO is the link between the command and the education office and ensures the list of approvers is current. If you have not been a command approver of TA before, please familiarize yourself with the process at www.mccs-sc.com/mil-fam/voled/active.shtml.
Education Advisory Council (EAC) UEOs are members of the EAC. The EAC meets once each quarter (usually March, June, September & December) [now E- Meetings via Email. Simply review approve content and follow-up on action items.] The EAC is the official opportunity to liaison with VolEd Staff and resident college representatives to speak for your service members. We need UEO participation to tell us how we can improve our support of your Marines, Sailors, etc.
Marketing One of the most important things we can do is to get the word out. A common Marine complaint is, I didn t know about that [opportunity, etc]. Emails & Flyers Education Stations Education Newsletters Conversations / word of mouth advertising Please use your unit s leaders, NCOs & other networks to get the word out!
Recognize VolEd Programs can support the unit Participation in classes and other VolEd programs will enhance individual & unit capabilities, improve quality of life, and provide positive outlets for free time. College courses: on base, off base, internet, deployed, etc. We have MOUs with Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, Park University, USCB and TCL. Service members are not limited to these schools! Apprenticeship programs (USMAP) based on MOS and earn Department of Labor Certificate of Journeyman Status. (Web-based)
