Repository: Tennessee State Library and Archives, 403 Seventh Avenue North, Nashville, Tennessee, 37243-0312 Administrative/Biographical History The Tennessee State Library was established in 1854 and combined with the Department of Archives and History in 1919. This unification created the Tennessee State Library and Archives (TSLA) as a division within the Department of Education. In 1982, the responsibilities of the division were transferred to the Secretary of State. The State Library and Archives is responsible for the management and preservation of state records and publications as well as books, manuscripts, maps, and audiovisual materials related to Tennessee. Organization/Arrangement of Materials The collection is organized by Library of Congress classifications, which reflect topical areas. Although now an archival collection, the decision was made to retain the topical arrangement as it existed. A large section of unprocessed materials were incorporated during archival processing following this same organizational scheme. Acquisition and Appraisal Provenance and Acquisition: From its opening in 1953 to reorganization in 1985, Library and Archives operations were separate within the Tennessee State Library and Archives building. Librarians formed a Special Collections area in which to house ephemera, small publications such as brochures, pamphlets, and the like, and other items of interest that remained unbound. Upon reorganization, Library and Archives operations were consolidated and such items were generally added to existing archival holdings, leaving Library Special Collections closed to additions. In order to provide greater access to the materials, the collection was transferred to Archives custody in 2008 and prepared for public use as an archival collection. Processing and Administrative Information Preferred Citation: Library Special Collections, 1787-2007, Tennessee State Library and Archives Processing Information: This collection was processed and arranged by Tom Lamb, Library Technical Services Section, and Kimberly Wires and Kate Williams, Archival Technical Services Section. Responsibility for the collection was transferred in 2008 from Library Technical Services to Archival Technical Services. Duplicates and items unrelated in any way to Tennessee or the South were removed during processing. Electronic Location and Access: Finding Aid Web Address (if Available)
