Joe Kimmel, Superintendent Prairie School P.O. Box 68 * New Raymer, CO * 80742 Phone: (970)437-5351 * FAX: (970)437-5732 Website: www.prairieschool.org Tabitha Piel, Principal Prairie Parents and Community, Welcome to the 2015 spring semester. Students and teachers have seemed to hit the road running and have adjusted well to school life after the nice break. Just a couple things to update you on as we move forward into the semester. We have a special congratulations to our 7th grade brain bowl team. The team placed first at the regional meet out of 34 teams. The team consisted of Mitch Dollerschell, Kathryn Schoemaker, Patrick Thompson, Ayden Marler, and Andrew Littlefield. They were coached by Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Schoemaker. They will be competing at the state meet on February 21. We will be having a Geo Bee for students in grades 4-8 and Spelling Bee for students in grades 6-8 at the school on Jan 22, 2015 starting at 1:00. We welcome all parents to come and be a part of our school competition. The Safe Touch presentation that was scheduled for the 15th of December was changed to February 16th. The state assessment windows will begin for students in grades 3-11 in March. Within the next couple weeks a schedule will be posted to our website. Please check the website and try to plan appointments on days when students are not scheduled for testing. Your help is much appreciated in this matter. The Prairie Secondary Staff would like parents to be aware of a new discipline procedure that we are implementing. Teachers are able to give students a lunch detention for behavior issues or due to grades. Students will get their lunch and go to a designated room during the lunch detention. Students will be contacting parents if they are given this form of discipline. Students will also be spending time in lunch detention if they are not eligible (2 D's or 1 F). It is important to all of us at Prairie to have well rounded students that not only meet academic requirements but also maintain behavioral expectations. I wish you a happy new year, Tabitha Piel Prairie Principal

Miss Birdy s Art Class Newsletter Welcome to Second Semester! This semester 6 th, 8 th, and 9 th graders will be having art class every day! I m so excited to get to know each and every student! Are you a parent who wants to keep track of what is due? Check out my website at http://prairieschoolart.weebly.com and scroll down to your student s grade level. I will have what is due on the first page as well as information about the projects we are currently working on. If you have any questions, please contact me via email at kbirdsall@prairieschool.org Thank you! What s on display this month? Kindergarten Snowmen- Kindergarteners got to make some snowmen while staying warm inside! They learned about stencils, collage, and painting. They made their snowmen unique by adding hats and scarves! Come check them out in front of the art room on the bulletin board! 1 st grade The Snowy Day Collage- 1 st graders read the story The Snowy Day by Ezra Keats. By looking at the way he illustrated his book, we chose to paint paper in a variety of ways and then cut it up into a collage! Students connected to all the things they love doing in the snow! See it in the library! 2 nd grade Da Vinci Robots Did you know that Leonardo Da Vinci invented robots? The 2 nd graders learned all about it! Then they created their own robot that would help them do something! After creating and painting their robots, we learned about print making. We made a symbol that represented what our robots did and carved it into a Styrofoam plate. Come check it all out on the bulletin board in front of the art room!

4 th grade Bug Stained Glass Windows Students have already created their own insect in their sketchbooks in the last project, but this time they had to think more about symmetry, translating their drawing into a silhouette, and warm and cool colors! These bright artworks can be seen hanging in the library window! 5 th grade Artist Self Portrait Students learned about the artists Vincent Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, and Frida Kahlo. We learned about how they drew many self portraits, but they all drew them in very different styles! Students chose an artist to model their own self portrait about and then they drew with colored pencil, chalk pastels, or oil pastels. Come check it out in front of the art room! 10 th grade Pixar Emotions Sculpture These students were inspired by the artists at Pixar and the new Pixar movie about emotions called Inside out. They chose to personify one emotion that they personally feel. After sketching many ideas, they built their sculpture out of clay. Once fired, students chose to paint or glaze their sculptures, carefully choosing colors that could represent the emotion they were trying to portray. Come check out their sculptures in the display case in the library! GeoBee & Knowledge Bowl upcoming events Prairie students to compete in GeoBee and Knowledge Bowl events The National Geographic Geographic Bee or GeoBee will be held on January 22 following the Prairie School Spelling Bee. The competition is open to participants in the 3 rd to 8 th grades and will cover all types of geographic topics. The Knowledge Bowl is a general knowledge competition and will take place at Pawnee on Feruary 9 th. Prairie will field five teams- three Junior High, one Junior Varsity, and one Varsity. Parents are welcome to attend and watch the teams compete with others from all over the league. If you have any questions about either of these events please contact Will Sander at wsander@prairieschool.org or 970-437-5351.
