Carter BloodCare Scholars 2014-2015 Scholarship Program Show Leadership! Give Blood Give Life This scholarship was established to recognize excellence in participation in the high school blood drive program with Carter BloodCare. High school students donated approximately 30% of the blood collected annually in our service area. Our scholarship plays a vital role in encouraging donors to begin donating at a young age and through the education of their donation process will hopefully procure a life-long blood donor for the future. Donating blood is the first legal decision a student can make and we thank those students who step up to the plate and offer a life-saving gift. This scholarship will be awarded to an East Texas graduating senior, within the 27-county region served by Carter BloodCare, who plans on attending a post-secondary institution (e.g. colleges, universities, community colleges, institutions or technical centers). Eligibility Resident of an East Texas county Student at a participating East Texas secondary education facility (School must host two blood drives in the 2014-2015 school year) Graduating high school senior Maintained a grade point average of 2.5 or better in high school studies Demonstrated outstanding personal leadership among his/her peers by participating in the blood drive program at their high school during his/her senior year (Donating or Volunteering)**** Scholarship Amount Each scholarship awarded will be a minimum of $1500.00 Scholarship funds will be awarded as follows: $1,000 Awarded to the student for college tuition assistance, books, etc. $ 500 Awarded to the school for use in their senior graduation activities (ie. Project Graduation, etc.) Application Deadline Friday February 27, 2015 No exceptions will be made. Renewability This scholarship will be awarded for one year only.
Application Instructions The Carter BloodCare s Scholarship award is for East Texas area graduating seniors who have actively participated in their respective high school blood drive program. (Active participation is defined as donating blood, signing up potential donors and assisting the blood drive chairperson before and/or during the blood drive.) Students from these Texas counties are eligible for this scholarship: Anderson, Angelina, Camp, Cass, Cherokee, Delta, Franklin, Gregg, Harrison, Henderson, Hopkins, Houston, Kaufman, Lamar, Marion, Morris, Panola, Rains, Red River, Rusk, Smith, Titus, Trinity, Upshur, Van Zandt, Wood This scholarship will be awarded for one year only. TOPIC: This year s topic will focus on creative strategies for recruiting new blood donors and helping to build a life-long commitment to saving lives. Essay participants will interview a peer or an adult that has never donated blood before and analyze the reasons given for not donating blood. Participants will recommend strategies to overcome those objections. Please use the following questions in your interview: 1. 1 in 7 people will need blood at some point in their lives. Who do you imagine these people to be? 2. Do you believe donating blood is the right thing to do? 3. What is the main reason you don t donate blood? 4. Do you think you would be a blood donor at some point in the future? Why or why not? If so, what age? 5. If you were willing and able to give blood today, where would you go to donate? You may either submit a video of the interview OR conduct the interview and write an essay over the interview and answers given. Essay Instructions: All questions must be answered. Please type a minimum of 600 words in Times Roman 12 pt. font, double-spaced standard paragraph format is requested. Spelling and grammar are taken into consideration. Give a brief synopsis of the answers you were given during the interview and spend the majority of your essay sharing your strategies to overcome the objections you were given. Do not put your name in the header or footer of your essay. Do not mention your name or school anywhere in the essay. Essay should be mailed with your application and upon receipt, will be assigned an anonymous number for grading purposes. Failure to meet these requirements will result in disqualification.
Video Instructions: Video submissions should have two components: the interview and the applicant sharing strategies to overcome the objections they were given. Please post your completed video to YouTube as an unlisted video. The video must not be able to be searched and if it is found using a public search, it will be disqualified. Your video submission must be 2-5 minutes long. You are not permitted to use Carter BloodCare logos in your video. You cannot mention Carter BloodCare, your name, or what school you attend in your video. Post a link to your unlisted video submission in an email to mthomas@carterbloodcare.org. This email must also include a short synopsis of the video, your name and your school name. This must be emailed by February 27, 2015. Once received, your video will be assigned an anonymous number for grading purposes. Failure to meet these requirements will result in disqualification. **Your video will not be reproduced or shared by CBC. It will only be viewed by the executive management committee at CBC for grading purposes during the scholarship decision process.** In order to be considered for this scholarship, please submit the following: 1. The completed application. 2. A written essay OR video on the designated topic. 3. Letter of recommendation from the blood drive faculty coordinator, teacher, or principal. 4. An official current high school transcript. Please do not staple or bind! Applications must be received by February 27, 2015. No exceptions!
