The striking illuminations reveal unique insights into the spiritual and cultural lives of the nuns from the Cistercian Abbey of Salzinnes, Belgium. Written by hand in Latin on vellum, its 480 pages feature vibrant Biblical and non-biblical scenes and full length portraits of 34 nuns. The antiphonal was brought to Nova Scotia by Bishop William Walsh, the first Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Halifax in the 1840s or 1850s. In 1975 it was donated to the Patrick Power Library by Archbishop James. M. Hayes. It recently underwent extensive conservation and is now on exhibit at the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
