I am proud of how hard all our athletes work to prepare for games. I am proud of how the students celebrated being a Titan this week. It made me feel good about being an alum and the principal of the school. Now we start to look forward to the rest of the year. This week, we have Open House. Bowling Team Says Goodbye to a Great Coach in Search of Another I have recently been informed, and regret to inform you all, that Stevenson Girls Bowling Team Head Coach/Girls Program Coordinator Kim Maddy has elected to resign her position with the team and will not be returning this season. I'd personally like to thank Kim for all her years of dedication and service that she put in to the Stevenson Bowling Team, from her time spent as an Assistant Coach with the JV team to taking over the program a few years ago. Kim's knowledge and dedication to what we do each and every year will truly be missed but I understand her need to take a step back to be able to spend more time with her family and her desire to accomplish some personal goals that she has set for herself. We wish Kim the best of luck and hope to still see her around from time to time. With that being said, we now have an opening for someone to take over as the Girls Team Head Coach/Program Coordinator. If you know of anyone, or if you yourself may be interested in the position, please let me know ASAP and I will forward that information on to our Athletic Director. Sign your teenager up for free street safety driving program being held September 22 Teen Street Skills is a new community program, led by Robbie Buhl, educating teen drivers ages 15-21 with a legal driving permit on street safety. More than the typical driver's education program, teens will learn about how to maximize their car's performance in order to properly react to adverse conditions. This program puts teens behind the wheel to learn skills that will be used for a lifetime. Included in the program are the techniques teens need to be safe and responsible drivers on our community s streets, including: Driving Basics, Defensive Driving Behavior Skid Control Emergency Braking Accident Avoidance and much more! Student Textbook Fines/Fees Stevenson textbooks are electronically checked-out to students and are the students responsibility. Students should treat the books like money and make sure that don t lose them or cause the books to become unusable. If a student received a book at the beginning of this year and have since changed their schedule, the students should return the textbook immediately to the Media Center to remove them from their account. At the end of each semester, students will return their textbooks to the Media Center and the books will be removed from their account. Students who do not return the book at the end of the semester will be assessed a fine of the cost of a new book and a processing fee of $5. Avoid fines and fees and return your books on time! Support Girls Swim Stevenson Girls Swim and Dive team swam to third place (out of seven) this past Saturday in the L'anse Creuse Relays and were defeated in the water on Thursday when they hosted a meet at Henry Ford II. I started my teaching career at Stevenson 13 years ago and have taught at Jeannette Junior High for the past 10 years. My new endeavor includes teaching English in the Academy for Manufacturing, Automation, and Design Engineering (the MADE program) and I look forward to creating new and challenging ways for students to connect literature and the manufacturing industry. My husband is also a teacher and coach at Stevenson and we have two beautiful little girls that can often be seen running around the football field or basketball court. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, camping, reading, and being active. I look forward to my new chapter as a Titan! Safety, technology and infrastructure improvements highlight Nov. 6 Bond Proposal The Utica Community Schools Board of Education has unanimously (7-0) approved placing a $155 million bond proposal on the November 6 ballot to address safety and security, technology and infrastructure improvements identified through the district s strategic, long-range facility improvement program. The bond proposal will allow us to continue providing an environment that supports the academic excellence for students that our community expects and deserves, Board of Education president Gene Klida said. The bond projects address safety and security and infrastructure priorities that directly impact our classrooms. The projects also provide our teachers the tools they need to drive learning and develop the job skills that businesses need to build our economy. Voter approval of the bond proposal has been structured to keep the tax rate at or below the current level. The bond proposal will affect each UCS student and every UCS school and school facility. The ballot proposal states that that the bond proposal will provide for: 1. Making safety and security improvements, including cameras and door-locking systems. 2. Equipping, furnishing, re-equipping and refurnishing school district buildings, facilities, and structures, and acquiring school buses and technology equipment. 3. Constructing additions to and/or remodeling school district buildings. 4. Improving and developing sites, including playgrounds, athletic fields, facilities, and structures in the school district. Safe and secure schools are a top priority for our community and our district, Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns said. The improvements in this bond proposal are a key piece to our collaborative efforts with local law enforcement to continue to keep our schools safe places for students and staff.
Technology improvements provide students and teachers the resources to support learning, including key areas of Career and Technical Education (CTE) and the integration of skills that ensure success in college and career. The infrastructure projects also support the district s long-range improvement programs in key areas of roofing, paving and the replacement of buses. Board of Education Treasurer Dr. Robert Ross emphasized that voter approval of the bond proposal has been structured to not increase the current tax rate. Through solid fiscal planning, this bond issue has been designed to ensure we can address our facility priorities at or below our current millage level, Dr. Ross said. Dr. Ross added that the improvements will allow the district to extend the life of current school buildings and protect the investment the community has made in its facilities. Area realtors are clear that the strength of Utica Community Schools protects property values and draws new families and businesses to the communities we serve, he said. Dr. Ross noted that by law the bond revenue will be used only for capital improvements and may be not used for operating expenses, such as salaries or utilities. It is important that our taxpayers know that all revenue must be used for the purposes that are specified in the bond proposal and the expenditures are independently audited, he said.
