GLEN RIDGE NEW JEBSEY Glen Ridge is a small community of home owners. with a population of about 8,322. Over 90% of the 2,200 houses are owner occupied. All stores, garages and so on, are concentrated in one small area, with the bank, the Savings and Loan Association and Post Office nearby. There is only one industry in the Borough the Matchless Metal Polish Company. The area of the Borough is 1.4 square miles. There are 22 miles of paved streets and sanitary sewers, and 28 miles of water mains with 279 fire hydrants. Excellent water Is supplied from the Wanaque Water Shed. Of course Glen Ridge has its own fire and police departments. Tax ratables amount to about $56,000,000. Taxes are equitable and are generally accepted as reasonable, considering the services rendered. There are four public schools with a staff of 88 teachers for 2,008 pupils. The public library contains over 39,200 volumes plus over 4,000 recordings. There are three borough playgrounds in addition to the school athletic field and seven well-kept tennis courts at Freeman Field. The Freeman Field House on Hurrell Field provides excellent athletic facilities for Borough teams. In addition, the Glen gives Glen Ridge a beautiful park. Two hospitals are available to the Borough Mountainside on the Montclatr border in the north end and Montclair Community Hospital In Montclair near the south end of the town. Transportation facilities are unsurpassed. The Erie- Lackawanna Railroad provides service to the Hudson Tubes or ferries to New Tork. Buses run to New York and to Jersey City, and buses run to Newark in 20 minutes, two minutes more to Pennsylvania Station. Motoring to Times Square in New York is less than 40 minutes via State Highway 3. Bloomfield and Montclair to the East and West provide extensive shopping and amusement facilities. Municipal Parking Lots are adjacent to the two railroad stations. The character of the residents of Glen Ridge and their community spirit, have enabled the Borough to operate for over 70 years on a completely non-political basis. The Mayor and Council serve without pay, as do all other elected officials except the Tax Assessor and Collector. This unique feature in itself would establish Glen Ridge as an ideal place in which to live. No matter how far you may search, it is very doubtful if you could find another town with such a friendly atmosphere and such highly developed conxmunity spirit. It is a privilege to live in Glen Ridge.
