MNA CONVENTION REGISTRATION How to Register Online Registration: To register on-line, please visit our website at www.msnurses.org. Information for the 2018 MNA Annual Convention can be found on the Home Page and under the Events menu. Online registration requires a credit card payment. MNA accepts VISA, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. Registration Policies Late Registration: On-line, mailed or faxed registrations will not be accepted by the MNA office after Monday, Oct. 15. After October 15, additional registrations are encouraged, but must occur on-site. Cancellation/Refunds: Refunds shall be granted, according to the following: a. Refund requests must be made in writing. b. A $30 processing fee will be applied to all refunds issued. c. No refunds will be granted after October 12, but a pre-paid registrant may send a substitute. Racing to Meet Nursing Challenges TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23 PRE-CONVENTION SESSION 12:30 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. Knowing Me, Knowing You: Provider Self Awareness to Improve Patient Outcomes Roderick Green, MSN, PMHNP-BC Roderick Green has over 22 years experience as a health care professional, with over seven years of experience as a psychiatric RN. In 2012, Mr. Green graduated from UMMC s School of Nursing s Adult Psychiatric Mental Health NP program and began his practice on the receiving units at MS State Hospital. In that role he worked with substance abuse, serious and chronic mental illness, and the emotionally distraught. He is currently employed with Precise Clinical Neuroscience Specialists and was previously with UMMC at the Center for Telehealth as a telemedicine psychiatric NP and served a population of patients ages 13 and up. His nursing experience includes Medical-Surgical, OR, ICU, Bone Marrow Transplant, Nursing Management, Med psych and Ortho-Neuro Rehab nursing care at the UMMC in Jackson. Prior to becoming a nurse, Mr. Green served five years as a corpsman in the US Navy. WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 24 WEDNESDAY LUNCHEON SPEAKER 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. Leadership Pam Confer, PhD(c), MPPA Pam Confer is an international, award-winning, bilingual professional speaker, author, editor of publications, singer, songwriter, and public relations consultant. She is the founder of Speak BIG!, a communications and public speaking program inspiring all to Speak Up! Speak Out! And Speak Often! Ms. Confer holds a Master of Public Policy and Administration degree, and is currently completing her PhD in Public Policy and Administration from Jackson State University. Ms. Confer is the recipient of numerous awards and is an accomplished entertainer. She recently recorded the song Mississippi Beautiful as a tribute to Mississippi s bicentennial and the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum and Museum of Mississippi History.

Racing to Meet Nursing Challenges THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25 THURSDAY LUNCHEON SPEAKER 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. Mississippi s Health Needs Paul Byers, MD, State Epidemiologist, Mississippi State Department of Health Dr. Paul Byers received his Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi College and attended Medical School at The University of Mississippi School of Medicine, where he also completed an internship in Internal Medicine. He has participated in many public health responses, including Hurricane Katrina and subsequent hurricanes, and has been involved in the investigations of multiple diseases and conditions of public health significance including Legionnaires disease and foodborne outbreaks, among others. He serves on the Continuing Medical Education Committee for the Mississippi Association of Public Health Physicians, and on the Pharmacy & Therapeutics Committee as well as the Institutional Review Board for the Department of Health. He is a respected author of numerous publications and distinguished presenter on the subjects of Epidemiology and Public Health. Dr. Byers is renowned for his commitment to the citizens of Mississippi and his outstanding work in public health. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25 SIGMA THETA TAU LUNCHEON SPEAKER 12:00 noon - 1:00 p.m. Nursing Challenges of Today and Tomorrow Donna Lewis Pritchard, MSN, RN, CFNP Donna Pritchard has over 27 years of nursing experience, currently serving as the Chief Nurse Executive for North Mississippi Health Services/North Mississippi Medical Center. In this role, Ms. Pritchard represents and is responsible for all facets of nursing within a healthcare system that employs over 900 nurses in its flagship hospital in Tupelo, its five affiliated community hospitals, and its 32 clinics in northeast Mississippi and northwest Alabama. Ms. Pritchard has an astute understanding of both the legal and ethical aspects of the scope of nursing practice. Ms. Pritchard completed the FNP program at the University of Alabama Birmingham, received a Master of Science Degree in Nursing Administration from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the University of North Alabama.

Racing to Meet Nursing Challenges THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25 & FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26 BOARD OF NURSING UPDATES Melissa King, DNP President, Mississippi Board of Nursing Dr. Melissa H. King is the Chief Clinical Officer with emd Telehealth Solutions with service areas including the states of Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Tennessee. She is a family and emergency nurse practitioner with specialized training in emergency medicine with over 19 years experience in emergency care across the nation. Dr. King is focused on enhancing access and quality care for patients in both rural and urban settings. Education and utilization of nurse practitioners in emergency medicine through the development of a robust interdisciplinary didactic and clinical training program is another primary focus and passion. Dr. King is involved in continued research in areas of patient quality, outcomes, and satisfaction. In addition to her participation with numerous organizations at the state and national level associated with Telehealth and advanced practice provider practices, Dr. King also serves as the President of the Mississippi Board of Nursing. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25 & FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26 BOARD OF NURSING UPDATES Phyllis Johnson, MSN, FNP-BC Executive Director, Mississippi Board of Nursing Phyllis Johnson is the Executive Director of the Mississippi Board of Nursing. Prior to assuming the role as Executive Director, she served as the Director of Advanced Practice at the Mississippi Board of Nursing. She attended Mississippi University for Women where she received both her BSN and MSN. Prior to joining the Board of Nursing, she was employed as a Family Nurse Practitioner at the Department of Veterans Affairs Sonny Montgomery Medical Center (VA) in Jackson, serving in numerous administrative and clinical roles. In addition to her nursing degrees, she obtained a Master of Science degree in Biology with emphasis in Genetics and Molecular Biology. Ms. Johnson retired from the US Navy Reserves at the rank of Commander. She served as the Senior Medical Provider for the Navy Operations Support Center and was responsible for the medical readiness of approximately 200 members.

Racing to Meet Nursing Challenges FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26 JOINT SESSION SPEAKER 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Child Abuse Paula Broome, Bureau Chief, Bureau of Victim Assistance, Mississippi Attorney General s Office Paula Broome is the Bureau Chief with the Mississippi Attorney General s Office, Bureau of Victim Assistance. She develops and conducts statewide training for law enforcement, prosecutors, and community groups on the topics of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking. She was instrumental in developing a 20- hour domestic violence course for law enforcement cadets that has been implemented in all Mississippi Law Enforcement Academies. She also developed and teaches a multi-day course on domestic violence, sex crimes and human trafficking that has been added to the curriculum for the Certified Investigators Courses offered at two state law enforcement academies. Ms. Broome has played a key role in the development and passage of state legislation dealing with domestic violence crimes, stalking, human trafficking, and civil and criminal domestic abuse protection orders. Ms. Broome has received numerous honors for her work, including being presented with the Harvard University s High Honor Award for outstanding contributions in the governance of American Indian Nations for her work in developing the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians Family Violence & Victim s Services Program, selected by the American Bar Association, Commission on Domestic and Sexual Violence, as the recipient of the 2016 Sharon Corbitt Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions by an attorney in the field of domestic violence. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in sociology from Millsaps College, a Master of Science degree in criminal justice from Northeastern University, and a Juris Doctorate from Mississippi College School of Law. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26 JOINT SESSION SPEAKER 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 a.m. Abused Not Broken-A Child s Story Riley Herrin Riley Herrin has been working with survivors of sexual violence since 2010 as a victim advocate. She currently works for Kids Hub Child Advocacy Center as a Forensic Interviewer. She has been trained in ChildFirst Protocol, Family and Victim Advocacy, Darkness to Light, Green Dot Bystander Intervention, and has given over 250 presentations focusing on primary prevention of sexual violence and education. Ms. Herrin found her passion in helping others, specifically survivors of sexual violence, early in life. She started her career as a victim advocate and prevention educator in 2010 working at the Shafer Center for Crisis. During her time at Shafer, Ms. Herrin worked closely with survivors of all ages and provided over 250 presentations. Ms. Herrin is a Master s Degree Social Work student at the University of Southern Mississippi where she acts as Co-President of the Student Association of Social Workers.

Racing to Meet Nursing Challenges FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26 FRIDAY LUNCHEON SPEAKER 12:20 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. Health Literacy Joy P. Deupree, PhD, CRNP, WHNP-BC Dr. Joy Deupree is Director of Community Engagement and an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing where she serves as a consultant for research and doctoral studies with a focus on promotion of health and healthcare for underserved and vulnerable populations. For 18 years she has taught an interprofessional campus-wide course and conducts workshops for educational sessions on the topic of health literacy. Dr. Deupree established the Alliance of International Nurses for Improved Health Literacy in 2012 (an online forum); the mission of the organization is to advance the health literacy research agenda by nursing to create successful nursing interventions; improve quality of patient care for low literate populations; and to promote educational standards for nurses who care for low literate populations. Because of her work in health policy and health literacy, Dr. Deupree was one of 20 nurses nationwide chosen for the highly competitive Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Executive Fellowship (2014-2017). In 2015, as a gubernatorial appointee to the Alabama Health Care Improvement Task Force, Dr. Deupree garnered support for the establishment of the Alabama Health Literacy Initiative and serves as the Chair of the Initiative. Previously, Dr. Deupree earned a master s degree in women s health nursing, and a BSN from UAB School of Nursing. She earned her PhD for Health Promotion/Health Behavior in 2011 via a joint program from the Schools of Public Health and Health Education at UAB and the School of Human Studies at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
