South Heidelberg Police Department How to Guard Against Utility Imposters You hear about it all too often in the news: An unsuspecting homeowner victimized by thieves posing as utility company workers to gain entry and rob the house. You can prevent utility imposters from targeting you by taking precautions to protect yourself. Individuals claiming to represent the water, gas or electric company will approach the resident and use a variety of excuses to enter the home. For example, they are supposedly investigating a complaint by a neighbor or checking water pressure, etc. Once inside the home, the imposters typically divert the resident s attention by sending him/her to a different room while they or an accomplice robs another area of the home. If a utility worker comes to your door and you are not expecting them, DO NOT let them inside without proper identification. Utility personnel wear uniforms, drive company -branded vehicles and wear photo ID badges with the company s logo. Don t be afraid to ask for photo ID, and take the time to examine the ID badge whenever someone from a utility company arrives at your home. If you are still unsure and have any suspicions about the individual s identity, contact the Police Department by calling 9-1-1 immediately. Please share this advice with family and friends, particularly seniors who often fall prey to these thieves. Be vigilant, and don't get fooled by utility imposters! Our thanks to PA American Water Company for much of this information. Thank you Sergeant Brennan, continued One of Sergeant Brennan s legacies is his work with youth, whether it was through his church and their youth organizations or with Camp Conrad Weiser, who annually hosts the Camp Cadet Program. Sergeant Brennan now serves on the Board of Trustees of that program. In the interim, Roy will continue on a Part-time basis in transitioning his duties to his successor. I am certain that our residents will join me in wishing Sergeant Brennan a long, prosperous and healthy retirement and say, Thank You, for a job well done! Replacing Sergeant Brennan will be Sergeant David E. McQuate. Sergeant McQuate comes to the South Heidelberg Department with a wealth of knowledge and experience, having been certified as a Police Officer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for over 25 years. He has held positions ranging from a Patrolman, a Sergeant for Robesonia Borough and to his most recent position as a Detective in the Berks County District Attorney s Office. He has had extensive specialized training in many areas including, but not limited to, accident reconstruction, child abuse, identification and screening of illegal narcotics and Certification in Class A Wiretapping and Electronic Surveillance pursuant to Chapter 57, Title 18. We welcome Sergeant McQuate to service here in Western Berks County where he was born, raised and currently resides. We are certain he will be a positive addition to our force.
