MASTHEAD Steve Terrel Scholarship Awardees

A SCHOLARSHIP ETHIC is that which aims to pass on to future generations the best part of the cultured world. To know this world is to gain a proprietary attachment to it. To know it well is to take responsibility for it. Thank you to all our donors who have taken responsibility and made this day possible.

Honored Guests FCA1 (SW) Ryan Woodbury and CTR2 (SW) Chelsea Stone receive Certification of Appreciation certificates from council president John Price. Both Sailors are stationed aboard USS MOBILE BAY CV 53, a council adopted ship. Chelsea Stone, Steve Terrel, Ryan Woodbury, Tom Ackland, Bill Hughes posed for this picture not knowing it would be published. Bill Hughes represents the Palm Springs Air Museum and was guest speaker at our luncheon.

The Navy League Youth Medal The principles for which we stand are the principles of fair play and a square deal for every man and every women in the United States. These words were spoken by Theodore Teddy Roosevelt, 26th President of the United States. A man of tremendous energy and high spirits. A born competitor, he was considered the pacesetter in his endeavors. Roosevelt believed that a strong military presence insured peace. In 1905 he brought about a peace between Japan and Russia. For this he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize-a portion of which is donated to further the development of the Navy League of the United States. Chief John Easton (Ret) presents The Navy League Youth Medal to Cadet 1st Sergeant Luis F. Lopez, Jr. of the Desert Hot Springs High School Marine Corp JROTC. The Navy League Youth Medal was established to honor those who best exemplify Roosevelt s values of energy, spirit, competition and fair play. Who would have thought back in 2007 when I drove that first Marine to the Base, and the Desert Sun ran the article Local Girl Helps Marines, that we would be where we are today? A full decade has passed since I founded S.O.S. and we began our mission of helping America s Heroes by providing them with free airport transportation. Who could believe that after that newspaper article ran, we would have signed up 65 volunteers within days of its publication? It is absolutely astounding that we could go from moving 500 Marines in our first year, to over 135,612in 10 years, made 45,204 trips, carried 542,448 bags, drove 180,816 hours, and logged 6,780,600 miles (the equivalent of 272.3 times around the World)! We have improved the lives of those 135,612 Marines and their family members in these past ten years, and saved them $20,341,800 in transportation costs, and it s all because of you! The volunteers who have selflessly given your gift of time and made sure a young Marine could get home to see his newborn child, or attend his sister s wedding.. the stories go on and on! And you, our generous donors and patrons who give until it feels good, knowing you ve helped ease the financial burden on a young warrior by saving he or she the cost of airport transportation. To all of you, I owe an enormous debt of gratitude, and I continue to be in awe of your dedication to our mission. To help celebrate this major milestone for S.O.S, we are hosting an Open House on our 10th Anniversary to honor your dedication to our men and women in uniform. On Tuesday, May 9, come by our headquarters at 77851 Las Montanas Road, Ste A, Palm Desert, CA between 10am and 4pm to enjoy refreshments and a brief ceremony at 11am, to commemorate this momentous occasion!
