TANNER ELLISON FEATURED IN FEBRUARY REGIONAL REPORT An eleven year member of the County Liners 4-H Club in Knox County, eighteen year old, Tanner Ellison has dedicated his youth to a successful 4-H program. Tanner is actively involved in his club and community from serving as his 4-H Club President and 4-H/FFA Fair Board representative, as well as participating in FFA, National Honor Society, Student Council, Missouri Boys State and FBLA. He has shown livestock at the county, district, state and national levels in Beef, Swine and Poultry projects. Tanner is a role model for the younger 4-H members, recently sharing his knowledge of livestock projects during his county s National 4-H Week Project Night. This fall, he went on the air during a morning radio show to share his 4-H experience with the public. He is no stranger to community service and always willing to volunteer in different areas! Tanner is a great example of what an active 4-H membership can do for you! *If you are interested in submitting a nominee for the Regional Featured 4-H er, please contact the Extension office. REGIONAL 4-H ENERGIZER The Northeast 4-H Regional Energizer will be held February 18th from 10 am until 2 pm at the First Christian Church in Macon. The energizer is a day of games, good times, fun, workshops and food open to youth ages 11-18 and adults. Those attending will have the opportunity to meet new people and have a good time while participating in workshops related to livestock, improvisation, parliamentary procedure and crafts. There will also be chances to learn about state and national opportunities and other ways to become involved in the region and state. Adults attending will also have the opportunity to learn more through sessions that will assist you in increasing engagement and quality of your club or project meetings. There will be an opportunity to share ideas and ask questions. Registration is $10 per person (lunch is included) and is due to the Extension Office by February 10th. 2017 Knox County 4-H/FFA Fair Book Cover Contest Winner A big congratulations goes out to Tanner Ellison, of the County Liners 4-H Club, for his design being chosen to represent Knox County as cover of the 2017 4-H/ FFA Fair Book. Tanner will receive a check for $30 from the Fair Board. There were a total of nine impressive entries for the Fair Board to choose from, which is up from previous years. They were voted upon during the January Fair Board meeting on the evening of January 24, 2017. Thank you to all members who submitted entries for this year s fair book cover contest. Show-Me Quality Assurance (SMQA) SMQA training is required by all 4-H and FFA members in order to be eligible to exhibit food animals at the county fair. Members under the age of 13 must complete two consecutive years of training to be conditionally SMQA certified. An additional year of training is required when members reach 14 to be fully SMQA certified. March 2nd 7:00pm Monticello Lewis County Courthouse March 8th 6:00pm Memphis Scotland County Courthouse March 13th 3:20pm Edina Knox County High School March 14th 7:00pm Kahoka Clark County Courthouse New Missouri 4-H Community Service Learning Materials The new Missouri 4-H Service-Learning Website, http://4h.missouri.edu/service/main, offers many resources for clubs, junior councils, and other 4-H groups to lead and involve others in community servicelearning this year! A new series of Adult Leader Guide sheets on service-learning include: What is it?, Five Steps, Core Elements, Teambuilding, Action Planning, Goal Setting, Building Partnerships, Local Governing Officials, Reflection, and Continuing Support. Leaders will also find success stories and resources for service project funding, recognition, and evaluation on the site. Some older project resources for 4-H groups (with a new look) include: Service Learning Ideas from A to Z, Camo Coolers, Carry on Suitcases, Feeding Communities (Hunger & Food Security), Letter Writing Kits, Make -A-Wish Scrapbooks, and Weighted Blankets. Love is in the Air This fun Valentine s Day craft will be a hit at your next 4-H Club meeting. Multicolored Heart Crayons Materials Needed: Old crayons, a heart shaped heat resistant candy mold, cookie sheet, oven, adult supervision. Step 1: Remove the paper covering from your crayons. Step 2: Cut them up into little pieces, about half an inch in size. Step 3: Place different colors into the candy mold until molds are full. Step 4: Bake at 230 degrees (Fahrenheit) for 15 minutes. Step 5: Wait to cool then pop them out of the mold for a unique gift for your Valentine.

Photography Project Members to Serve Dinner at Annual Rotary Valentine s Banquet The Knox County Photography Project members are lined up to help with the Rotary Club s Annual Valentine s Day Dinner. Photography Project members have the opportunity to raise funds to pay for professional printing, mounting and display supplies to show Photography Projects at this year s Knox County 4-H/FFA Fair! Photography Project members are asked to be at the Knox County Community Center on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. wearing black pants and white shirts. Dinner will be provided by the Knox County Rotary Club to each member who helps. Photography Project members will be serving food and drinks during the meal. The tips given by attendees at the end of the night will be donated to the Photography Project effort. This will be a fun and easy way to raise money for this year s projects! Hunting and Outdoor Skills Leader Certification Workshop Are you or someone you know interested in becoming a project leader in this field? This workshop will be held on March 31st - April 2nd, 2017 at Windermere Conference Center in the Lake of the Ozarks, Roach, MO. The workshop will cover topics such as: Wildlife Identification hides, skulls, scat, tracks, wings; Firearm selection matched to game hunted, Map and compass skills, Plaster casts of animal tracks, Contest event information and tips, Dutch-oven cooking, Hunting Skills State Team insights, Simulated hunting and shooting activities, Carmelita Hunt and Ballistics. The registration will be through 4HOnline. Please contact the Extension office for more information. Online registration opens February 1st. Registration is limited so do not delay. Registration closes: March 15th (or when the workshop fills.) Knox County Extension to Donate Basket for PTO Silent Auction The Knox County Extension office has agreed to donate a MIZZOU basket for the PTO Carnival Silent Auction this year. Each club has been asked to donate an item with the MU Logo on it. The Extension office will fill the basket with additional items. Please drop off your item to the Extension office by February 24, 2017. The PTO Carnival will be held on March 11, 2017 from 5 to 8 p.m. Upcoming Events

Missouri 4-H Foundation Scholarships The Missouri 4-H Foundation offers more than sixty scholarships every year, each ranging from $500 to $2,500. One scholarship application permits the applicant to be considered for any available scholarship, subject to conditions specified by the donor. Spring Shooting Sports Leader Certification Workshop Are you interested in becoming a certified Shooting Sports leader? The spring shooting sports certification workshop is scheduled for March 24-26, 2017 at Camp LifeChange in Clinton, Missouri. Registration will open in 4HOnline on February 1st and run through March 15th, or until full. All registrations are on a firstcome, first-served basis when accompanied by the $80 registration fee. Workshops usually fill quickly, so don t procrastinate! To register you will need to be an enrolled volunteer with an active status (screening and orientation completed.) Beef Genetics Education Team Announces National Essay Contest: What does it mean to be a beef breeder in the 21st century? Youth participating in 4-H, FFA, or junior beef breed organizations are encouraged to compete in a national essay contest. Essay should repond to the prompt What does it mean to be a beef breeder in the 21st century? The winning essay will be published in one of the BEEF magazines online newsletters (e.g. BEEF Daily or BEEF Cow-Calf Weekly). The 2nd through 5th place essays will be published on A Steak in genomics blog. We will award $500 for first, $300 for second and $200 for third place in the contest. The first place winner will also receive 50 GeneMax Focus or PredicGEN tests. Essays will be judged by beef genetics extension specialists, breed association staff, and trade publication staff. Essays will be judged on their ability to encourage best practices and technology adoption by describing: Trust and effectiveness of beef breeding best practices and technologies Simplicity of using technology The profit and sustainability outcomes of using best practices and technology Essays are required to be at least 600 words long but not longer than 3,000 words. Missouri Pork Expo The 2017 Missouri Pork Expo and In the Show Ring will be held February 7th and 8th in Columbia. Youth participating in In the Show Ring will also receive Show-Me Quality Assurance certification/recertification. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. 4-H Day with the Cardinals Missouri and Illinois 4-H members, parents, volunteers and alumni will gather at Busch Stadium on Saturday, May 20, 2017 for the 16th annual 4-H Day with the Cardinals. The Cardinals will be playing the San Francisco Giants in a 6:15pm game. Tickets for the game will be $25 each and include a specially designed t-shirt featuring the 4-H Clover on the back and the Cardinals emblem on the front. 4-H members, leaders, alumni and their families that purchase 4-H Day with the Cardinals tickets will have the opportunity to participate in a parade around the Busch Stadium outfield. Pre-game ceremonies will include a recitation of the 4-h pledge and ceremonial first pitches by an Illinois and Missouri 4-H member. As an added bonus the Cardinals give-away for the game is a Cardinals pet bowl. The first 30,000 fans age 16 and older will receive this one-of-a-kind item. Tickets for the event must be ordered on the 4-H Day with the Cardinals order form. Forms are available at the University of Missouri Extension Office or on the web at www.mo4h.missouri.edu. Ticket orders must be postmarked by April 10, 2017. Tickets usually sell out before the order deadline, so families are encouraged to order early. 4-H Clubs, counties, or groups of families who would like to be seated together must send their orders in the same envelope. Families can also participate in the 4-H Day with the Cardinals raffle to win prizes such as throwing out the first pitch, autographed baseballs, and tickets to other Cardinals baseball games. Funds raised through the raffle support Missouri and Illinois 4-H programs. 4-H Day with the Cardinals has raised almost $75,000 to support Missouri and Illinois 4-H programs in the first 15 years. Complete information about the 4-H Day with the Cardinals raffle is on the ticket order form. Missouri Youth Grading and Judging Contest and Clinic The 29th annual Missouri Livestock judging and Grading Clinic will be held Saturday March 4th at the Trowbridge Livestock Center on the MU Campus in Columbia. This year s events are co-sponsored and coordinated by the University of Missouri, the Missouri Department of Agriculture, and the Advisory Team. This is a great opportunity to support and develop Missouri s youth involved in animal agriculture. The contest is designed for members in 8th grade and older and the clinic track focused on hands on learning, working in small groups to learn more about the basics of livestock evaluation, understanding the importance of USDA grading to cattle and a field trip to Mizzou s USDA inspected meat plant to learn about the end product is geared towards those members 8th grade and younger. Contact your local Extension Office to register and pay the $10 registration fee (make checks payable to Clay Ewell Educational Services). Registration for the Contest and Clinic is due by February 20th and registration is limited. Northeast 4-H Field Day- April 8 th, 2017 If you enjoy playing outdoor games such as volleyball, relay races, and tug-of-war, as well as team building activities with your group, sign-up with your county today! The Northeast region will be having their first ever field day where counties will face each other with some friendly competition. This is going to be a fun event for 4-H ers, parents, and volunteers, and an opportunity for us as a region to meet one another and have fun while doing it. Camp Ca-Pow! March 27 March 31, 7:30 a.m. 3:00 p.m. You can do anything! Take the first step and expand your college knowledge this spring. If you are in middle school or Jr. High (grades 6-8), you are invited to a free camp in March to visit campuses, explore career paths, and hear college students share their stories! Become a Student Leader in the Global Fight Against Hunger Don t miss the Missouri Youth Institute at the University of Missouri on April 14, 2017! To participate in the Missouri Youth Institute, students research a global issue and write a three to four page paper under the supervision of a teacher/mentor (using the downloadable guidelines). Students must register online and submit their research paper by February 15, 2017. Ninth through twelfth grade students in the 2016/17 school year are eligible to participate. Papers will be evaluated by The World Food Prize Board of Reviewers. There is no registration cost to participate in the Institute and lunch will be provided the day of the event. However, both student and teacher/mentor participants must organize their own transportation to and from the event in Columbia, MO. The Missouri Youth Institute is hosted by the University of Missouri with the generous support of the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR), Missouri 4-H, Missouri FFA, and The Brady and Anne Deaton Institute for Leadership in International development. National 4-H Day of Service April 29, 2017 Stay tuned for more details from USDA, NIFA and National 4-H Council on how Missouri 4-H clubs and groups can participate in this new national day of service! Food security is the 2017 theme. 2017 State Shoot The Missouri 4-H State Shoot Dates have been decided--mark it on your calendars! Archery 300 State Shoot: August 26 & 27 at Prairie Grove Shotgun Sports in Columbia, MO State Trap Shoot: August 26 at Missouri Trapshooters Association in Linn Creek, MO State Skeet Shoot: August 27 at Gateway Gun Club in Bridgeton, MO State Shoot in September: September 16 & 17 at Prairie Grove Shotgun Sports in Columbia, MO. State 4-H Congress Scholarship Nominations State 4-H Congress will be May 31 June 2, 2017 at the University of Missouri in Columbia. There are opportunity scholarships available to help with the cost of this trip. If you are interested in a scholarship, please contact the Extension office by February 15. Congress is designed for Missouri 4-Her s ages 14-19. The Missouri State 4-H Council plans and implements the event that is held on the University of Missouri campus. You will learn the life skills of a leader, connecting with experts in quality workshops and learning opportunities, experience campus living residence halls, cafeterias, classrooms, you name it, elect your representatives on the State 4-H Council, and get to know other 4-H youth from across Missouri...and HAVE FUN! Clover Kids Corner: Bouncy Balls Pour 1 tablespoon of glue into one cup add a drop of food coloring and stir with a craft stick. In a second cup, combine 2 tablespoons of water and ½ teaspoon of borax together and mix with another craft stick. Add 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and ½ teaspoon of the borax solution to the glue and let stand a minute. Stir with the craft stick until fully mixed together and the mixture becomes very difficult to stir. Mold the ball in your hands. It will be sticky at first but will become more solid as you mold it. Store your ball in a baggie so it doesn t dry out and crumble.

State Council Update Applications for State Council Executive Committee (President, Vice President, etc.) have been turned any Regional Representative currently on Missouri State Council who wanted to apply December 30th. The State Council will vote on two candidates to run for each position and officers will be selected by delegates the 2017 Missouri 4-H State Congress. Teen Conference Committees have also been gathering items for workshops at Teen Conference and are finalizing plans for each workshop.
