He hired an attorney to bring a discrimination case against Christians and Jews and observances of their holy days. The argument was that it was unfair that atheists had no such recognized days. The case was brought before a judge. After listening to the passionate presentation by the lawyer, the judge banged his gavel declaring, Case dismissed! The lawyer immediately stood and objecting to the ruling saying, Your honor, how can you possibly dismiss this case? The Christians have Christmas, Easter and others. The Jews have Passover, Yom Kippur and Hanukkah, yet my client and all other atheists have no such holidays. The judge leaned forward in his chair saying, But you do. Your client, counselor, is woefully ignorant. The lawyer said, Your Honor, we are unaware of any special observance or holiday for atheists. I know God is giggling! A Florida Court Sets Atheist Holy Day! Gotta love this Judge! A proper decision by the courts...for a change. The judge said, The calendar says April 1st is April Fool s Day. Psalm 14:1 states, The fool says in his heart, there is no God. Thus, it is the opinion of this court, that, if your client says there is no God, then he is a fool. Therefore, April 1st is his day. Court is adjourned... You gotta love a Judge that knows his scripture! Jim Beischel, Detachment Chaplain 480-299-1007 jrbeischel@yahoo.com

This is a reminder that the applications for the Detachment Son of the Year Award, the Richard Kepler Award, and the James Ashley Memorial Award are due to Bob Hath at this years Detachment campout. If you are not able to attend the campout you can still email those applications to bobhath2017@gmail. com. These applications must arrive to me by May 1, 2018. No Exceptions. You can find the applications and other information by going to the detachment website www.azsal. org. Click on PUBLICATIONS, then scroll down the page until you see AWARDS and you will find the details. If you have any questions you can reach me @ 480 650 1445. Also don t forget about 2 other awards that are given on a national level, the Ken Wyman Memorial Award and the C.G. Lorton Memorial Award. The Wyman Memorial Award is presented to the Squadron who shows the most progress on the Ten Ideal and Five Star programs. Squadrons are encouraged that had members achieve certificates in the Ten Ideal or Five Star programs to put in for this award. In past years, this award was given with as little as two Ten Ideal achieved. The award is given on a per-capita basis to level the playing field for the smaller squadrons. The C.G. Lorton Memorial Award is given to the member who contributes the best idea of the betterment of the Post home, Squadron, or the Community. Any idea big or small should be submitted for this award. An idea that has a small effect locally may bloom into a statewide or even a National movement. Our next goal is for April 11th at 90% so please help get you membership in on time. See you in Cottonwood at 2018 Camp Out For God and Country, Thomas W. Volume 9, Issue 2 Sons of The American Legion Detachment of Arizona Page 3 Detachment Education & Awards... In order to submit for a squadron or individual award from the Detachment, a letter of recommendation will be needed on Squadron. Your submittal letter should contain all pertinent information about the award being applied for, signed by the Squadron Advisor, Squadron Commander and/or Squadron Adjutant. Submitting may be made to Awards Committee Chairman, Bob Hath. The Detachment has five major awards each year. They are as follows: Squadron Awards The Ken Wyman Memorial Award Is awarded to the Squadron who shows the most progress on the Ten Ideal and Five Star Programs. Squadrons are encouraged that had members achieve certificates in the Ten Ideal or Five Star programs to put in for this award. In past years, this award was given with as little as two Ten Ideal achieved. The awards are given on a per-capita basis to level the playing field for smaller Squadrons. The Richard Kepler Memorial Award For the Squadron with the most percapita charitable contributions in the fiscal year. Add up all your Squadrons charitable contributions and divide that number by your membership total from the previous year. Individual Awards Detachment Son of the Year Awarded to the Member who best exemplifies what a Son of the American Legion should be. An outline should include all information about the member s involvement in volunteerism, fund raising, participation in patriotic observances, and any other participation pertinent to the award. The C. G. Lorton Memorial Award This award is given to the member who contributes the best idea for the betterment of the Post home, Squadron, or the Community. Any idea big or small should be submitted for this award. An idea that has a small effect locally, may blossom into a Statewide or even a National movement. The James Ashley Memorial Award This award is given to one Detachment Member with outstanding achievements in fundraising resulting in the highest donations amount for the year. About the Ten Ideals and Five Star Achievement programs If you start at the beginning of the fiscal year, you should be able to complete these programs in one year s time. While these Awards should not be given lightly or earned easily, they are a valuable tool in the education and training of young citizens. Note on the Five Star program, the test in the handbook is the final step in earning this award, and should only be given to those members who have earned the right to take the test through their work in all aspects of Squadron participation. As we pass the halfway point in the fiscal year, it will soon be time to honor those members who have done the work for your Squadrons. I would hope that you all have taken our suggestion, and have kept Do you know who should win one of these awards? 4 Kepler Award Squadron with the highest per-capita in charitable contributions. 4 Wyman Award Squadron with the most progress on Five Star and Ten Ideals programs. 4 Son of the Year - Detachment Member who best exemplifies what a Son of the American Legion should be. 4 Lorton Award Detachment Member with the best idea for the betterment of the Squadron, Post, or Community. 4 Ashley Award - Detachment Member with outstanding achievements in fundraising resulting in the highest donations. a good record of your member s contributions to the successes of your Squadron. As we have asked in the past, we recommend that you honor your workers on or around the American Legion Birthday in March. As we have said in the past, hard work deserves recognition. We look forward to receiving many submissions this year. Please do not assume that if you are a small Squadron that you don t have a chance at one or more of these awards. The Awards that the Detachment gives are on a percapita basis to even the playing field. For God and Country, Bob Hath, Trophy and Awards Committee 480 650 1445 or HathR@earthlink.net

Volume 9, Issue 2 Sons of The American Legion Detachment of Arizona Page 5 So, what is the adjutants job...? Adapted from the forward & introduction from The Post Adjutant s Manual published by The American Legion, 2017 The adjutant has the same position in the post (state) level as the secretary of any other organized body, and a bit more. The adjutant is like the first sergeant of the company, around whom all post activities revolve. Many posts (states) find it wise to retain a good adjutant in office over a period of years. Likewise, a good post (state) will recognize when it is time to change adjutants. The adjutant may provide continuity in the post. While the commander s duties are largely inspirational and executive, an adjutant s duties are administrative. The commander navigates the ship, but the adjutant is the engineer who runs the ship s machinery and keeps the vessel on an even keel. He or she is the personnel officer and personal point of contact for individual members of the post. The adjutant keeps membership records and minutes of meetings, checks up on and assists the work of other officers and committees, and publishes official orders, announcements and instructions. The adjutant s office should be a clearinghouse for all post (state) activities. The adjutant assists new officers and committees in getting started with their work and provides direction to their endeavors. Help is not the same as interference. Suggestions for the adjutant The only indispensable qualifications are honesty and willingness. The adjutant should obtain a set of post (state) account books (consult the current Emblem Sales catalog for description and prices). These require no special knowledge of bookkeeping. The new adjutant should go through all post (state) records at the earliest opportunity. The constitution and by-laws, minutes of meetings, and reports of officers and committees will give insight into the post s (state) policies and traditions. Communication from Department (Detachment, National) headquarters will provide additional information and instructions. Department (Detachment, National) headquarters and staff can be your most useful tools as an adjutant. The Display was impressive and heart rendering - Many of the 58,000 soldiers listed were of Joe`s generation. It was a great History lesson for Cameron who took pictures which he displayed and talked about at his school. The brand new and largest (almost 400 ft) traveling scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC along with a new Mobile Education Center, came to Oro Valley, AZ. Sponsored by American Legion Post #132, The site was open 24 hours a day and free to the public. The Wall That Heals bears the names of the more than 58,000 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. Opening ceremony occurred Thursday March 15 at 9am. Closing ceremony with fly-over by F-16 jets, was on Sunday, March 18 at 9am. TAPS was played each day at 6:30pm.
