The Holy Cross Institute AT ST. EDWARD S UNIVERSITY SPRING 2014 in FORMATION Convocation 2014 A Meeting of the Family...a Holy Cross education is about relationships...being a family... Brother Stephen Walsh, CSC, 2009 On March 30 31, 2014, more than 175 Holy Cross educators from around the world gathered at St. Edward s University in Austin, Texas, for the ninth annual Convocation of the Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward s University. The theme of the gathering was Trends in Catholic Private Education to 2020 and Beyond. On Sunday morning, three longer sessions were held with a focus on marketing and recruitment of students, on funding Holy Cross education into the future, and on technology and one-to-one computer use. That afternoon the opening liturgy was celebrated with Father Richard Warner, CSC, Superior General of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Outstanding music was provided by the St. Edward s University Liturgical Choir. Following the liturgy was a welcome dinner. The dinner began with a video welcome from Dr. George Martin, president of St. Edward s University. Annually, a St. Edward s University student who graduated from a Holy Cross high school is asked to speak to the gathered educators. This year, Jezreel Asare, an alumnus of Notre Dame High School in West Haven, Connecticut, spoke with great passion of the impact Holy Cross had on him at Notre Dame West Haven and St. Edward s University and also during an immersion experience with Holy Cross in Brazil. (Continued on page 3)

Letter from the Executive Director Convocation 2014 continued It is difficult to realize that we have just completed our ninth convocation of the member schools of the Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward s University. We have already begun work to organize our 10th convocation. I thought I would take this opportunity to reflect a bit on the history of the Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward s University and its convocations. I recall very clearly that Brother Stephen Walsh called the first convocation together as a meeting of the family of Holy Cross educators in the United States. He did not envision an annual convocation at that time, but it became clear at this family meeting that an annual gathering was a desire. We have heard from a number of speakers and viewpoints over the past nine years: Brother Stephen Walsh, CSC; Sister Amata Miller, IHM; Brother George Schmitz, CSC; Father Thomas Looney, CSC; Brother Joel Giallanza, CSC; Dr. George Martin; Father Walter Jenkins, CSC; Dr. Richard Gaillardetz and Father Joseph Keefe, SJ. Each speaker has been provocative and has moved forward our understanding of ourselves as Catholic and Holy Cross educators. The Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward s University began first as an idea in the mind of Dr. George Martin, President of St. Edward s. He had recently joined St. Edward s after a number of years at St. Peter s University in Jersey City, New Jersey, operated by the Jesuits. He became fascinated early on by the Holy Cross approach to students and worked hard to try to figure out how it developed. He had a concern that the number of Brothers was diminishing at St. Edward s University and wanted to find a way to sustain the Holy Cross philosophy and approach to education with fewer religious of Holy Cross. He spoke first to Brother Richard Critz, Provincial of the South-West Province at the time, who suggested he speak with Brother Stephen Walsh and me. We suggested he broaden the approach to include the secondary and middle schools and other Holy Cross colleges, all of which faced the same issue. Brother Thomas Dziekan, the executive director of Holy Cross Educational Ministries, was brought into the discussion and the Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward s University was born with the financial support of the university and the three brothers provinces. The Holy Cross Institute has been able to accomplish what it has only because of this financial support and the financial support of several generous benefactors and the assistance of many of the Holy Cross schools around the country who recognize the benefits of maintaining their Holy Cross identity and who want to help the Holy Cross Institute assist them. This support has benefitted all of us. We look forward to our 10th convocation as a celebration of the international character of Holy Cross education. We hope to have Holy Cross educators join us from Africa, Asia, South America and Europe next year. We have been very grateful for active participation of the Brazilian and Chilean schools over the years. This has strengthened our Holy Cross identity greatly. I want to thank each of you who have played a role in making the Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward s University successful in its mission. We are gathering a planning group to build a vision of the Institute s work for the next five years. The work of this group will also be an important part of the tenth convocation in 2015. Brother Donald Blauvelt, CSC Executive Director Jezreel Asare, St. Edward s University senior and alumnus of Notre Dame High School, West Haven, Connecticut, speaking on Sunday night. On behalf of all Holy Cross students, I would like to express my deepest gratitude and thanks to all the teachers, brothers, coaches, staff and mentors that saw something in us that we might never have seen. I can now say that I am a Notre Dame Man, but more importantly that I am a Man of Holy Cross. Thank you. Jezreel Asare 14 2 The Holy Cross Institute AT ST. Convocation 2014 Participant The concurrent session on Instructional Rounds was AMAZING. I left the session hoping to bring this practice to my school. Convocation 2014 Participant making the vision real The Program Development Committee g Brother Donald Blauvelt, CSC The annual convocation and other programs under the supervision of the Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward s University don t just happen. They are built upon the hard work of some individuals and groups and they are overseen and developed by a representative group of Holy Cross educators from around the country, known as the Program Development Committee (better known on the inside as the PDC). The Program Development Committee meets at least twice a year. The fall meeting has usually been held by telephone conference call. The spring meeting has usually been held just before the convocation. The spring meeting also includes an appreciation dinner for the work of the committee. Brother Donald Blauvelt, Brother Joel Giallanza and Ms. Laura Sanders also participate in the meetings. The PDC develops the theme and flow of the annual convocation and seeks out and recruits breakout leaders. They also make recommendations regarding the major speaker or speakers at a convocation. In general, they have worked out of an understanding and belief that the long sessions at a convocation should provide a service to the member schools and that the breakouts should have a Holy Cross twist on the topic being covered. The committee also looks at possible new programs for the Holy Cross Institute. A number of possibilities are on the table for such programs, especially in the areas of developing online programs for faculty and board in-service. The Holy Cross Institute is currently seeking new sources of funds to bring these to fruition. PDC Membership 2013 2014 Membership on the PDC is continually changing. This year, the PDC is made up of the following individuals: Ms. Teresa Billings (Holy Cross New Orleans), Chair Mr. Michael Abbott (Notre Dame West Haven) Dr. Mary Ann Beiting (Archbishop Hoban) Mr. Marco Clark (Bishop McNamara) Mr. Henry Galindo (Holy Cross San Antonio) Ms. Martie Giammatteo (Notre Dame West Haven) Ms. Katie Lewis (Cathedral) Ms. Yvonne Saunders (Gilmour) Mr. Michael Speckman (St. Francis) The growth and deepening of the mission of the Institute is nothing less than remarkable, as is the success of its many programs and the increasing number of schools who participate... This phenomenon seems to me to create great confidence...on the part of all participants and an opportunity to share ever more deeply the different roles that our wonderful lay people play... STRENGTHENING THE FAMILY Mission Assessment Visit to New Orleans g Brother Donald Blauvelt, CSC University, the Province which sponsors the school and the school itself. It is actually best described as a self-assessment facilitated by the visiting team. A team of Holy Cross educators gathered by the Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward s University spent three days with the school community of Holy Cross School in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 9 11, 2014. The team was made up of Brother Donald Blauvelt (executive director of the Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward s University), Sal Chavez (director of Mission Integration at St. Francis High School, Mountain View, CA), Patrick Clifford (principal of Notre Dame High School, West Haven, CT), Dr. Tricia Scott (principal of St. Edmond s Academy, Wilmington, DE) and Brother Michael Winslow (director of Service Programs at Holy Cross School, San Antonio, TX). The team began its work on Sunday evening with a tour of the school and a meeting with representatives of the Board of Directors. The entire school day on Monday was spent with the faculty, staff and administration reviewing best practices and areas for improvement in the four pillars of Holy Cross and Catholic education: Message, Community, Prayer and Service. On Monday afternoon the team met with some parent leaders and with the administrative team. On Tuesday, the team held sessions with members of the Religious Education Department and Campus Ministry team, with student leaders, and with randomly selected students in two groups, one from the middle school and one from the high school. The visiting team then met to put their report together and at the end of the school day reported to the faculty, administration and staff on their findings. It seemed to have been a positive experience both for Holy Cross New Orleans and the visitors. Dr. Joseph Murry, high school principal at Holy Cross, expressed it well when he said it is a time for us to stop and reflect on what our most important work is all about. The mission assessment program is implemented jointly by the Holy Cross Institute at St. Edward s Left to right: Charles DiGange, Patrick Clifford, Dr. Tricia Scott, Brother Michael Winslow, CSC; Brother Donald Blauvelt, CSC; Dr. Joseph Murry, Patricia Hrapman, Teresa Billings, Sal Chavez. While we prepare useful citizens for society, we shall likewise do our utmost to prepare citizens for eternal life. Blessed Father Basil Moreau 8 The Holy Cross Institute AT ST.
