Recruiting Future Mustangs (part 1) April 2017 about one hundred students from Fortune Schools of Sacramento and San Bernardino Counties visited Cal Poly and were greeted by several members of Cal Poly s CPBAC, BFSA, BSU and NSBE members. Cal Poly and the Black Alumni Chapter has teamed up with Margaret Fortune to construct a pipeline of Cal Poly ready students of color. Our role is to serve as visible examples of what is possible and to serve as mentors. Recruiting Future Mustangs (part 2) Yes you can! is what students at the Transfer College Fair heard from Rhonda Y. Hayes, Cal Poly Alumni Ambassador. It is important that students understand they have options. With hard work and a competitive GPA, they have as much of a chance as anyone else to attend the #1 top ranked public school in the western region. 8
Through its participation in the Cal Poly Alumni Ambassador program, the Cal Poly Black Alumni Chapter is committed to improving the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Come to the Being An Ambassador training during Black Legacy Weekend or sign up to be an ambassador in your area via email contact us at: cpblackalumnichapter@gmail.com Recruiting Future Mustangs (part 3) Lacy Billingsly (5th from the left) forming a high school NSBE group with Da Vinci students. Cal Poly alumnus, Lacy Billingsly (EE 12), is leading a mentoring group of underrepresented students at Da Vinci Schools in Hawthorne, CA. The same goal is being applied there also, getting students of color Cal Poly ready. 9
Cal Poly Black Commencement 2017 We are so very proud to have been able to sponsor the the 2017 Black Commencement with a GoFundMe campaign donation of $1,000. That annual celebration is something we are proud to support. Black Commencement is an annual celebration recognizing the culture and accomplishments of the Cal Poly African diaspora. This commencement is also a time when students are able to thank their families and friends for their support along the way. Distinguished speakers, special student awards, live performances, and the tradition of wearing Kente cloth stoles hand-woven from Africa, all add to the vibrancy of this celebration. 10
We want to thank our raffle donors for their tremendous support! Thank you Myraline Whitaker and Sea Crest Hotel for the 2 night stay! Thank you CP Alumni Association for the Mustang Family Weekend tickets! Thank you CP Athletics Department for the Football game tickets! 11
