Escambia County 4 H Guide to Recognition The 4-H Awards Program can help young people learn to set goals, plan activities to reach those goals, learn the value of service and develop leadership skills. When the focus is what can be learned from competition, rather than competition itself, youth develop an understanding that competition is a part of life whether in a youth organization, the classroom or the job market. Record Book, Achievement, and Recognition Awards are important in encouraging youth, and volunteers, that their work is valued, immeasurably appreciated, and the cornerstone of what makes 4-H the largest and most impactful youth development program in the country. Record Book Awards For Junior, Intermediate, and Senior 4 H Members To receive a year pin: turn in a completed record book according to outlined standards for grading. (Those standards may be found on the following page.) To receive a project pin: have completed an entire record book or project guide and submit for grading. For Cloverbud Members To receive a year pin (required): turn in a completed record book according to outlined standards for grading. Cloverbud record book rubrics are a checklist of sorts, so be sure to complete it! These may be found at escambia.ifas.ufl.edu/4h/awards-recognition-record-books/. To receive performance standards recognition (optional): turn in a Cloverbud Performance Standard Application. There are no necessary supporting documents. Do not use folders for these awards, they can be turned in as single pages. These may be found at escambia.ifas.ufl.edu/4h/awards-recognition-recordbooks/.

Graded Record Book Award Guidelines For All Cloverbud, Junior, Intermediate, and Senior 4 H Members 1. Submit one record book per folder. Do not put multiple projects in one book, or not all books will be graded. 2. Use a three pronged folder. 3. You may choose to decorate the cover of your book, or leave it plain, but it must have the following information on the outside of the folder, in this order: Your first and last name, club name, age group (Cloverbud, Junior, Intermediate, or Senior), number of years in 4 H, and project area (choose the most appropriate one from the project categories listed below), and a statement indicating awards, if any, being applied for (see awards list in this document). 4. Complete a Project Report appropriate for your age; this must be the first object on the inside of your record book unless your record book includes a Standards of Excellence Application. If your record book has pictures, a story, or something else required by the Project Report, you may write See page [#] where the Project Report prompts you for the repetitive information. For Junior, Intermediate, and Senior 4 H Members 5. If your record book does not have a spot for it, include a Financial Summary immediately following your 4-H Story. (Most 4 H Curriculum books will require this summary.) Even if your supplies were donated, estimate their value on the sheet, including the value of your curriculum book. For Intermediate and Senior 4 H Members Only *Please note that Intermediate and Senior Project Reports require Photos and a Narrative/Story to be attached to the report. Intermediates must have at least three pictures, Seniors must have at least five; three pages, maximum. Your Financial Summary (if necessary) must follow your story, and precede your Record or Curriculum Book Record Book Grading Standards All participants will receive a certificate noting their level of achievement (blue, red, or white merit). Books scoring between 100 90 points will receive a blue merit, 89 80 points will receive red merit, and 79 0 points will receive white merit. These categories should be broad enough to cover your project book. If you are unsure of what category to place your project in, seek consultation from your 4 H Leader, the 4 H Program Assistant, or the 4 H Agent. Application and Nomination Based Awards Beyond record book submissions, youth, volunteers, and clubs are able to apply or be nominated for awards recognizing achievement in and commitment to 4-H. Other awards will be presented that do not require application or nomination. However, we encourage you to examine the efforts you have put into 4-H this year, at any level, and let us recognize all that you do by supporting you and your program more heavily with these awards. We are proud of all our 4-H volunteers and youth and cannot possibly measure or appropriately convey our appreciation for you, however, we will certainly try. Youth Awards Each year, youth can submit their record books, or Senior Portfolios where applicable, for consideration for various prestigious awards in Escambia County 4-H. Youth may also be nominated for various awards. Below is a description of each award and the requirements necessary to be considered for the award. Unless the award requires a nomination, please encourage youth to apply for these recognitions by indicating their desire to be considered on their record book cover sheet. All Age Categories are eligible for the following: Standards of Excellence: If you wish to receive a performance standard, you must enter the required number of record books in the graded Record Book Contest (each performance standard has a required number of record books). Complete a Project Plan. Also, turn in the proper application form, following instructions for the desired level of achievement (Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Emerald). Include the requested documentation (i.e. Leadership Reports, Scholarship Portfolio, 4 H essay, Mentor Report, Wild Card documentation, etc.) in your record book. Awards will not be given to applications missing any necessary information, including member signature, in the member s hand. 4-H er of the Year: Each month, clubs may submit one youth as 4-H er of the month. This youth can be a junior, intermediate, or senior. At the end of the 4-H year, two 4-H ers will be chosen from among those 4-H ers of the month. The chosen youth will be those that have demonstrated commitment to the county 4-H program through club and project participation, volunteerism, leadership, and community service. These awards are sponsored by Farm Bureau and are accompanied by a $100 gift. Margie Gindl Public Speaking and Public Awareness Award: Youth submitting a record book and/or portfolio with a public speaking, citizenship, or leadership project are eligible for this award. The Margie Gindl Award honors youth that have been active in leadership and citizenship projects and who demonstrate growth in these areas. Past winners may not receive it twice. The Margie Gindl Award includes a 4-H Foundation Margie Gindl Memorial endowment award of $25 to be used for a 4-H event or project support. Cecil Guidy Animal Science Award: 4-H ers entering a record book in the Animal Sciences category are eligible to compete for this award. Award recipients will demonstrate active participation and outstanding achievement in an animal science project for the 4-H year. Projects entered in competitive events or demonstrations are highly encouraged. The Cecil Gindl Award includes a 4-H Foundation Cecil Gindl Memorial endowment award of $25 to be used for a 4-H event or project support.

Food and Nutrition Award: 4-H ers entering a record book for food and nutrition related projects may submit for consideration for this award. The awarded youth should demonstrate active participation and outstanding achievement in a food and nutrition related project during the award year. Projects entered in competitive events or demonstrations are highly encouraged. This award is honored by a $25 gift to be used for a 4-H event or project support. One recipient per year. Senior Awards Langley Bell Award: The Langley Bell should go to a member who constantly models the values of 4 H as did its namesake, Langley Bell, whom this award honors. This youth should embody all of 4 H s slogans, mottos, pledge, and ideology at all times. They believe in the organization, mentor peers, serve as a resource and helper to volunteers and staff, see the value in learning by doing, and live the pledge daily. The Langley Bell award is awarded to two youth who submit a Senior Portfolio, a 4-H Record Book for the present year, and exemplify outstanding community service contributions. 4 H members must apply to receive this award as well as participate in the interview process of candidates. Past winners may not receive it twice. Recipients will receive the time honored Langley Bell 4-H crest ring. (please note, these rings will not be available for the Awards and Recognition ceremony due to time needed to process orders) Sponsored by the Escambia County 4-H Foundation Helping Hand Award: This award, designated for Senior 4-H ers who have been nominated, recognizing the outstanding efforts of a youth who gone above and beyond in assisting another 4-H er, 4-H team, club or group in a way that maximizes the capacity of the team, club, group, or a project. The awardee will have demonstrated the ability to apply skills they have learned in 4-H in ways that better the 4-H program. This award may be received only once. The recipient will be awarded a $100 savings bond or financial voucher to be used for a 4-H event or project support. Extension Director Leadership Award: Senior 4-H ers age 14-18 may apply for this award. One recipient each year will be awarded $25 to be used for a 4-H event or project support. The awarded 4-H er must exemplify leadership and service in their club and their community that is documented in their record book and/or Senior Portfolio to be considered. This award may be received only once. Youth wishing to submit for this award should complete an application with their record book and/or portfolio. Senior Overall Record Book: Senior 4-H ers submitting a record book for judging will be considered for 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place overall record book. Record books should exceed minimum standards of documentation and reporting and should demonstrate mastery of knowledge in a project area, independence through active participation and self-determination in a project, belonging and contribution to a 4-H community club, team, or group, and generosity in applying skills acquired through 4-H to community service projects. Winners will be granted 4-H Foundation monetary awards to be used for a 4-H event or project support. (1 st - $40, 2nd - $30, 3 rd - $20). Intermediate Awards Intermediate Leadership Award: The Escambia County 4-H Foundation sponsors this award for an Intermediate (age 11-13) 4-H er that has demonstrated exemplary leadership skills in the 4-H year. 4-H ers applying are required to turn in a record book outlining their leadership skill development throughout the year. One award is given per year. Intermediate Overall Record Book: Intermediate 4-H ers submitting a record book for judging will be considered for 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place overall record book. Record books should exceed minimum standards of documentation and reporting and should demonstrate mastery of knowledge in a project area, independence through active participation and selfdetermination in a project, belonging and contribution to a 4-H community club, team, or group, and generosity in applying skills acquired through 4-H to community service projects. Winners will be granted 4-H Foundation monetary awards to be used for a 4-H event or project support. (1 st - $40, 2nd - $30, 3 rd - $20).

Junior Awards Beasley Junior Achievement Award: Junior 4-H ers (age 8-10) may apply for the outstanding Junior achievement award. Achievement as a Junior 4-H er is marked by a youth who has set goals in their 4-H year that emphasize learning new things, improving work they have tried before, and leadership and community service. Candidates will attend an interview prior to selection of recipients. Two junior 4-H ers will be selected each year and will receive a silver engraved bracelet. This award is given from donations by John Beasley Jewelry. Junior Overall Record Book: Juniors submitting a record book for judging will be considered for 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd place overall record book. Record books should exceed minimum standards of documentation and reporting and should demonstrate mastery of knowledge in a project area, independence through active participation and self-determination in a project, belonging and contribution to a 4-H community club, team, or group, and generosity in applying skills acquired through 4-H to community service projects. Winners will be granted 4-H Foundation monetary awards to be used for a 4-H event or project support. (1 st - $40, 2nd - $30, 3 rd - $20).

Volunteer Awards Margie Gindl Volunteer Leader Award: In memorial of Margie Gindl s volunteer work, each year one volunteer is selected for their service to the Escambia County 4-H program. Volunteers may apply for this award, documenting their service to committees, 4-H activity participation, community service, completing training, 4-H representation in community groups, reporting, teaching, and district, state, or national events attended. The awardee will be honored with a $25 gift to be used for 4-H volunteer leader training and youth events or 4-H club program or project support. This award may be received only once. This award is sponsored by the Gindl family. Jean Guidy Volunteer Award: Jean Guidy s support of the Escambia County Animal Science program was unbridled. In honor of her contribution, each year a volunteer in the Animal Science project area is recognized for their passion and pursuit of animal science education for youth as well as leadership in their club, group, and in the overall 4-H community. This award may be received only once. The award is accompanied by a $50 gift to be used for 4-H volunteer leader training and youth events or 4-H club program or project support. The award is sponsored by the Guidy family. Volunteer Standards of Excellence: Volunteer Standards of Excellence Awards are marked by four award levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Emerald Clover. Each level represents increased commitment to 4-H through participation in volunteer training, volunteer hours recorded, participation in Escambia County 4-H activities, participation in program support of Escambia County 4-H, recruitment of other volunteers, and volunteer evaluation. To be an Emerald Clover Volunteer is to achieve the highest honor of recognition as a 4-H volunteer and embodies selflessness and caring pursuit of youth development and leadership in one s community. Please apply or nominate a volunteer for this award by documenting the required standards of excellence.

Club Awards 4-H Club Achievement Award: The more active and engaged club members are, the more impactful the work of 4-H can be. We will recognize those clubs whose members have outstanding achievements among them that represent the mastery of skills and exemplary leadership in the 4-H program and in their chosen project areas. Club Standards of Excellence: Clubs can apply for Standards of Excellence in four award levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Emerald Clover. Levels are achieved by completion of the following: emphasis on group goals, active member involvement in club planning and annual program activities, maintaining an active and accurate calendar of events, minimum of 75% club member participation, fulfilled leadership roles, completed community service projects, 4-H promotional activities, activities beyond the club level, volunteer recruitment, active communication with club member families, parent participation, 75% achievement of project goals, recognition events, participation in competitive and non-competitive events, adhered to standards of safety, and maintaining a diverse member composition. Club Recognition: Each club may turn in one Treasurer s Book, one Secretary s Book, and one Scrapbook for the Club Competition. Any Club Performance Standards must be included in the Secretary s Book. Club books are due on the same day as individual record books. Clubs will be awarded one certificate noting all these achievements, and a trophy will go to the top Treasurer s Book, top Secretary s Book, and top Scrapbook. It is the club s discretion as to whether the club member who turned the book in or the club keeps the top award..

Use your handwriting for as much of the application as possible! Always sign your own name, regardless of your age, even if it isn t very pretty. The effort is what counts. When writing photo captions, try to teach the reader something about your project. Poor Example: This is me and my tree. Strong Example: This year, I grew a Valencia citrus tree for my project. Look how tall it is already almost as tall as I am! I have had it for almost 3 months. Use action pictures for the majority of your pictures. Buddy up with another person, and tell them you can take some pictures of them if they take some of you. At the beginning of your project, sit down and map out some goals. (That s section one of your project report.) You can use this time to think of good times and places to get pictures. Use SMART Goals. (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time bound) Look over the requirements at the beginning of the year. Make a timeline to accomplish different things so you can spread your work out. Remember your record book or application is the only impression you can make on your judges. Don t leave room for assumptions! Use pencil, and take your time. Make sure your handwriting is as legible (easy to read) as possible. Do not include rules, guidelines, or blank applications. If you don t have time to log them immediately, use sticky notes or a calendar to help you remember club or county activities and workshops. Be sure you write the date! Have a parent or teacher proof read your book or application. Check for spelling and grammar, and content. You can never have too much help with this! Keep all your receipts. You might even want to mount them in your record book for safe keeping. Just make sure you can see all the information you need! Read all the rules before you start. Start with this document, then the instructions on the Project Report or application. Attend as many Record Book Workshops as you can. If you still have questions, you can ask someone in person for help. Make sure you fill out the whole application or book. Double check that you have filled every writing space to the fullest, and have all the signatures you need. Attach only the necessary documents, in the order specified, or that they occur on the application. iphones have the 4 H Livestock Record App. Check it out to keep track of your project all year, and get a print out summary at the end! Tie in everything you can to your project in your report. (i.e. In your Fishing Record Book, note that you entered a home made lure in the exhibit booth at the fair, and gave a demonstration at County Events on how to bait a hook and common fishing techniques.) Make a Facebook page with your parent s permission to keep track of your photos and dates. Use it like a digital diary of your events! Keep your pages neat, unstained, and wrinkle free. This will help with how neat your book or application looks, and improve the graders impression of you since they can t meet you.
