BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE Theodule Leonard was a planter of Arright Plantation, West Feliciana Parish and of Cat Island, near Morganza in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. He was a tax collector and sheriff in West Feliciana Parish. His son, John Baptist Theophile Leonard, attended St. Joseph's College in Bardstown, Kentucky, and Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE Financial papers include items pertaining to the succession of Alexandre Brasseux; promissory notes; items related to the collection of taxes; statements from New Orleans factors; an agreement with freedmen for plantation labor; bills and receipts for goods purchased; and land documents. Two certificates appoint Theodule Leonard as constable for West Feliciana Parish (1846) and as captain of Company O, West Feliciana Regiment, Louisiana Militia (1861). Correspondence includes letters from John B. Theophile Leonard concerning education and news from St. Joseph's College and Louisiana State Seminary and Military Academy. Some letters relate to a student prank and include a letter from William T. Sherman concerning John B. Theophile Leonard's conduct (1860). Civil War letters relate news concerning Confederate States Army maneuvers in the area of Columbus, Kentucky. The collection includes an 1867 Constitutional Convention broadside (1868) pertaining to the redemption of warrants by tax collectors. Page 4 of 7

See the Container List for description reflecting physical arrangement] Series I, Correspondence, 1855-1874 Correspondence includes letters from John B. Theophile Leonard concerning education and news from St. Joseph's College and Louisiana State Seminary and Military Academy. Letters to Theophile come from his brother, E. Carmouche (1855), and his father (1860), some of which relate to a student prank and include a letter from William T. Sherman concerning John B. Theophile Leonard's conduct (1860). Civil War letters are written from Theophile to his father and relate news concerning Confederate States Army maneuvers in the area of Columbus, Kentucky (1861-1869). Later correspondence is written to Ovide Leonard of family news (1884). Series II, Financial and Legal Documents, 1842-1874 A number of financial papers include promissory notes, items related to the collection of taxes, and bills and receipts for goods purchased. These bills include cotton sales to Madame Fifi Leonard (1854), a bill from St. Joseph College to Mr. Theodule Leonard (1858), bills of Madame Brasseux (1858), and invoices from W.A. Gordon & Castillo (1859-1860). Some legal documents pertain to the succession of Alexandre Brasseux, such as the power of attorney of Geneviève Carmouche, his widow (1842). Also included are land grants (1859), the sale of a slave to Theodule Leonard (1853), an agreement with freedmen for plantation labor (1867), and Leonard s certificate of voting registration in West Feliciana Parish (1874). Series III, Military and Tax Collection Documents, 1861-1868 Military papers include a certificate appointing Theodule Leonard captain of Company O, West Feliciana Regiment, Louisiana Militia (1861) and a broadside from the 1867 Constitutional Convention pertaining to the redemption of warrants by tax collectors, as well as receipts for taxes collected by Leonard and letters and other documents from the Auditor s Office regarding the collection of taxes.
