Is mili Harmon Sharpe and Director Har tary pay safe? The government in old Atwood. Auxiliary member at Inside Story 2 Washington has agreed, at least large attending are Luz Arana, for now, not to make changes to our retiree pay. However, the deal is still facing opposition in the House because it calls for $350 billion in Pentagon spending cuts. Another area dear to future retirees is the current military retirement system, which some legislators want to be the same as the civilian retirement system. In other words, you pay into the system. I m glad we do not fall into that category. But how much do you know about Tricare benefits? Did you know that Tricare confuses most service members, retirees and their families? Or did you know that Tricare covers nursing home facility cases? However, you have to qualify for this service if you need it. Contact the nearest Tricare office to get more information. Once again, it s TREA National Convention time. This year the event will be in Reno, Nevada, from Sept. 28 to Oct 1, 2011. Chap Emilia Atwood and Reiko Sharpe. To our chapter members: If you have any suggestion you want us to take to the convention, let us know. We are looking for new faces to serve on the chapter board of director in 2012. Serving will help the chapter and will give you something worthwhile to do. Let us know if you re interested. Something new, during our last board meeting, the board approved publishing the biographies of our current chapter members in our newsletter, the Trooper. So send us a short bio, it will be nice to meet other chapter members. If you are not already receiving our newsletter, the Trooper, you can always read about chapter activities on our Internet website. Veteran s Appreciation Day at MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., will be on Sept. 24, 2011. The event takes place at the base exchange, like Louis Arana, President of TREA Tampa Bay Chapter 58. every year. Chapter members are invited to participate in this event. On that day, we let other retirees know about our organization. Remember, your chapter dues pay for chapter expenses and the donations we make to needy organization and high school ROTC cadets. As always, we need you support. All chapter members are welcome to attend meeting, held the third Tuesday of each month. The exception is our general membership, which we hold on Saturdays to accommodate those members that work and cannot attend meetings during the week. UNITED WE STAND Louis A. The Trooper Page 5 VETERAN S CORNER New Law Permits Veterans Designation on Florida Driver Licenses Florida Governor Rick Scott signed House Bill 1165 to recognize and honor Florida veterans who honorably served their nation. Veterans who live in the Sunshine State now can add a veteran designation to their driver license or identification card. The blue "V" on the driver license indicates the license holder is a military veteran. To add the "V" to a license or ID card, veterans can visit any Florida driver's license office, to include those operated by county tax collectors. They should plan to: 1)Present their DD-214, which shows their honorable discharge from active duty 2)Pay a one-time $1 fee, in addition to the replacement or renewal fee Visit www.gathergoget.com to ensure they have all the other documents required. Veterans who need to obtain a copy of their DD-214, may request it through the National Archives, which provides information on how to make the request online at www.archives.gov/ veterans/military-service-records/.. H.R. 1826 Would amend title 38, United States Code (USC), to reinstate penalties for charging veterans unauthorized fees. This bill would make it a crime for individuals or companies to charge veterans fees for providing assistance in applying for disability benefits. Federal law prohibits this already, but the VA is unable to enforce the law since it currently provides for no penalties or fines. H.R. 1826 would make it a misdemeanor, with up to a year in prison and monetary penalties as well, for defrauding veterans who apply for disability benefits. RETIREES APPRECIATION DAY The MacDill Retiree Activities Office will host a Retiree Appreciation Day on Saturday, September 24, 2011. AAFES, together with some sponsors, will present a display of the traveling Vietnam Memorial Wall. (They are hoping there will be no last minute change on this display). TREA Chapter 58 will have a booth at the Retiree Appreciation Day located in the food court. Come by and say hello.
