RSVP: bcsbanquet@gmail.com Include name, number of guests and entrees. Non-members welcomed. Guest Speaker: Dr. Mazin Yousif Topic: Grid and Autonomic Computing Future Data Center Perspective Current datacenters deployments are commonly static, provisioned for peak and rely on somewhat simple centralized management infrastructure. This often increases the datacenter's Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Cloud architectures and autonomic computing, relying on technologies such as virtualization, automation, manageability and dynamic provisioning, are transforming datacenters from their current static deployments to SOA (Service-Oriented Architectures) resulting in more efficient use of resources, space and electrical power, consequently reducing the TCO of datacenters. This talk will run through several approaches to alleviate datacenter pain points and set forth the vision for future dynamic datacenters. Dr. Yousif is currently the Chief Executive Officer of Avirtec, Inc., a startup technology company with focus on cyber-security and autonomic computing. Before that he spent 16+ years at Numonyx, Intel and IBM corporations. He also served as an adjunct Professor at several universities including Duke, NCSU, OGI and Arizona. His research focus is on Server architectures, cloud computing and datacenter optimizations. Dr. Yousif received his Master and PhD from Penn State. He also chaired several conferences and served in committees of many other conferences and in the editorial boards of journals. Letter from the Boise Section Chair Dear IEEE Boise Section Member, Thank you for your support of the IEEE Boise Section and Chapters. The IEEE in Boise has been, and will continue to be, a successful professional organization. As the end of the year approaches, we have seen increased member activity and are anticipating continued growth within the section and local chapters. The IEEE Boise Section is committed to the advancement of technology and support of the Boise community. I would like to take this opportunity to share with you a change in mailing the section newsletter, and to invite you to consider volunteering to be a section officer next year. To preserve the limited funds available, the Boise section recently stopped mailing out quarterly newsletters by traditional mail. As a result, members without email addresses did not receive newsletters at all. I would like to apologize to those members, and inform them that we will continue mailing the newsletter, via traditional mail, to those members who do not have registered email addresses on their IEEE member s profiles. Members with registered email addresses will continue to receive the newsletter via email and can find section and chapter updates on the IEEE Boise Section webpage. If you have a valid email address, and received this newsletter by traditional mail, please update your IEEE email profile. As January approaches, the time for annual elections is grows near. IEEE officer positions offer section members unique and exciting opportunities to network, grow professionally, and get involved with the IEEE on a community, national, and international level. The unique opportunities offered by the IEEE, the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology, are unparalleled by any technical organization! I encourage all Boise Section IEEE members, who may be interested, to run for an officer position. The IEEE Boise Section elections will be held, during the IEEE meeting on December 4th, and we are now accepting nominations. Please email me or any Boise Section IEEE officer to submit your nomination. Elections will be held for all Boise Section officer positions. If you would like to get more involved with the IEEE Boise Section, please stop by at one of the local meetings or contact any of the IEEE Boise Section officers to get information on how you can get more involved with the IEEE Boise Section. The IEEE Boise section is continuously looking for new people and ideas to benefit the IEEE and local community and looks forward to your involvement. To learn more about an officer position, contact one of the current officers noted on the section web site, http://ieeeboise.org/ or listed at the end of this newsletter. Cheers, Mark Bussert IEEE Boise Section Chair 2

Section News: Career Builder Workshop with Resume Review The section held its first Career Builders Workshop with Resume Review. The workshop was held at the Hillcrest Branch of the Boise Public Library the evening of August 5 th. There was a good turnout with twelve participants which filled the library meeting room. While the participants were waiting to have their resumes reviewed, they spent their time hearing the story of an engineer who was laid off during the dot com bust and what he went through until he found a job. The workshop also covered the career building resources available to members from the ieee.org web site and a short presentation was given on the benefits of joining the computer society. A fair amount of time during the workshop was spent networking with other engineers. Based on the feedback from the surveys, the workshop was well received and beneficial. Participants received their reviewed resumes at the end of the workshop. Boise Section Picnic The Boise Section held its annual picnic this September at Municipal Park. The picnic this year had great weather, great food, a large member turnout and a chance to watch the BSU football game on a big screen. The picnic has been an annual event where members can take time to socialize and network. The student branch did a great job cooking the food adding to a great day. 3

Notes: IEEE Official LinkedIn Group IEEE has its own official LinkedIn group. The following is excerpted from the main page of the IEEE LinkedIn group. This group contains Members of the IEEE, a non-profit organization and the world's leading professional association for the advancement of technology. Managed by IEEE staff, this is the only global IEEE group on LinkedIn that is verified against the official IEEE membership database. Active IEEE membership is required. For immediate approval, an IEEE email alias should be selected and confirmed as the contact email during the group application process. If you do not have an IEEE.org email alias please visit http://eleccomm.ieee.org/ to obtain it. Be sure to add it to your LinkedIn profile prior to applying for the group to assure an instant approval; note that Linked In will first send a verification message that must be opened to confirm the address. FYI - If an IEEE.org email domain is not provided during the group application process you could face a significant delay as they manually review all submissions sent with a different email domain. Approval in this case is based on matching Name and Email provided during the LinkedIn groups application process to the IEEE membership database. http://www.linkedin.com/groups?home=&gid=23804&trk=anet_ug_hm Company Liaisons Do you work at a company that employs engineers within our section? We invite each company to have one 'Company Liaison' to join our section's operational committee. The main responsibility of these people is to provide a point of contact to send information from the section Operations Committee to members working at these companies and to return information as to how the needs of their engineers can be met by the section. Company Liaisons are included in email discussions from the OPCOM, and are encouraged to help advertise section events to members and non-members at their place of employment beyond the section newsletters. They are invited along with all the section members to attend OPCOM meetings and give us input. If you are interested in being a company liaison, please contact Mark Bussert (mbussert@ieee.org). Do We Have Your Correct E-mail? If you haven t been receiving the newsletter or event notices electronically, check what we have for your email address on your mailing label. Please notify both the IEEE (address-changes@ieee.org or http://services1.ieee.org/membersvc/coa/intro.htm and the Boise Section Chair (mbussert@ieee.org) so we can add you to our electronic mailing list (we get address corrections only once a month from the IEEE). Plans often come about for events between newsletters. To assure that you get timely information about IEEE Boise events, please make sure we have your correct email address in our address database. How can the Boise Section better meet your needs? The Boise Section officers would like to make the best use of our dues to meet the needs of the engineers in the Boise section. The section currently provides for or partly subsidizes speakers, banquets and picnics through the use of your annual dues. If you have ideas on how to best meet the needs of the sections engineers, contact one of the officers.
