Fall 2018 Issue 1 AORN Richmond Area 4702 www.richmondaorn.org Officers President Janet Shortt, MHSA, BSN, RN, CNOR President-Elect Cathy Sweeney, BSN, RN, CNOR Vice President Sherry Zauner, BSN, RN, CNOR Past President Carla Beattie, RN, CNOR Secretary Janet Wingfield, RN, CNOR Treasurer Jean Watling, BSN, RN, CNOR Board of Directors Sheila Flores, RN, BSN, CNOR, RNFA Zelika Hargrove, RN, CNOR Jan Heizer, RN, CNOR Gloria Taylor, MA, BA, RN Donna Winderweedle, BSPA, RN, CNOR Nominating Committee Debbie Bartol, RN, CNOR Nicole Meredith, RN, CNOR Jessica Guido Ooms, RN, CNOR Newsletter Editor Gloria Taylor, MA, BA, RN Webmasters Sue Cheatham, RN, CNOR Janet Wingfield, RN, CNOR President s Message Our National AORN theme is Harmonized Care: The Key to Safety, chosen by our 2018-2019 AORN National President Stephanie Davis. Like a world-class symphony orchestra, with various musicians playing in harmony to create a beautiful piece of music, the perioperative team, too, play the roles of circulator, scrub, and first assistant to give safe patient care to our patients. The Harmony created among the team delivers a plan of care each day in every hospital in America. This Harmony begins with education and knowledge of all things in perioperative nursing. Joining and participating in your local AORN chapter introduces the members to new surgical techniques and technology that enhances patient safety through education and collaboration with colleagues. AORN Richmond Chapter 4702 already has an exciting schedule for educational opportunities, including the AORN/VCORN workshop Heart, Mind, and Soul November 3, 2018 at St. Mary s Hospital. Our annual Golf Tournament will be held September 20 at Hunting Hawk Golf Club. Our volunteer committee continues to offer exciting volunteer opportunities to give back to our community as well as get together to have some fun! Speaking of committees, I would like to encourage each of you to join a committee that would interest you for our upcoming year. We will introduce the committee chairs at our September 17 th monthly business meeting. This is an excellent way to network with others in the nursing profession and contribute to the wellbeing of our local chapter. Help plan our golf tournaments and education workshops and meetings! Get involved in nursing Legislation and Research to learn important national topics that affect your nursing practice! So much to learn! Have a topic you would like to learn more about? See a member of the education committee: they love suggestions for education topics. Know of a worthy cause we can volunteer for? See our Marketing chair with the suggestion. Your involvement in our Chapter is so important to all of us! The AORN National Member Pulse and OR Nurse Link are available to you as a member to remain in tune with national topics, including Guideline Essentials and how to promote better self-care for yourself. Voting for National officers will be held in April 2019 and open to all members. This will coincide with the 2019 National AORN Expo and Conference to be held in Nashville, Tennessee April 6 10 2019. I look forward to serving as your President for the upcoming year. Please reach out to me or any of our officers to help you grow in your nursing career. See you September 17 to begin an exciting new year in AORN Richmond. Janet Shortt

We're looking forward to helping out some organizations that we've developed relationships with in the past, such as the Reinhart guest house, BARK (Bandit's Adoption & Rescue of K-9s) & Caritas. We received a 5 Star Rating (the highest possible) for 2017! Research Committee Report If anyone is interested in being a part of this committee, please let Debbie Bartol or Janet Shortt know.
