CREATIVE YOUTH PROGRAMME FAQs WHAT IS A WORLD EXPO? A World Expo is a celebration for all; a global destination where everyone can learn, innovate, create progress, and have fun by sharing ideas and working together. The first Expo was The Great Exhibition held in London in 1851. It crowned 20 years of rapid technological and social change in an event that defined the spirit of the age. Millions of people who travelled to the exhibition witnessed what the world could look like in the future, thanks to science and technology. Today, World Expos are one of the largest international events, taking place every five years and lasting six months. Participants include governments, international organisations and companies, which gather in the host country to promote their achievements, ideas, innovations, products and national identities, as well as promote tourism, business and investment. WHAT IS EXPO 2020 DUBAI? Between 20 October 2020 and 10 April 2021, Dubai will host the next World Expo. It is the first World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA) region and will be an Expo for all. Expo 2020 will bring together more than 200 participants, including at least 180 nations, businesses, non-government organisations and educational institutions. More than 25 million visits are expected to be recorded, with about 70 percent of visitors to originate from outside the UAE. It will be an exceptional experience. WHAT IS EXPO 2020 DUBAI S THEME AND ITS SUBTHEMES? Each Expo revolves around its own theme to leave a lasting impact on the path of human progress. s theme, Connecting Minds, Creating the Future, was chosen because we believe that as the 21st century unfolds and our challenges become increasingly complex and interrelated, innovation and progress is dependent on collaboration and the sharing of ideas in novel ways. Our theme also captures the spirit of the UAE a federation born of partnerships and collaboration. Through our theme, Expo 2020 provides a platform to encourage creativity, innovation and collaboration in the areas of our three subthemes: Opportunity, Mobility and Sustainability. 1
We will work towards opening new opportunities to individuals and communities to help them achieve their needs today and inspire them to pursue their future aspirations. We will focus on providing easier access to knowledge, markets and innovation by working on solutions and technologies that will facilitate the movement (mobility) of people, goods and ideas. We will strive to protect and preserve our environment for future generations by doing more with less (sustainability). WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF EXPO 2020? will be the first World Expo hosted in MEASA, and we want to trigger a long-term effect in this region and the wider world, inspiring the next generation. Visitors will experience new innovations, participate in forums for sharing great ideas and cultural exchange, witness performances, concerts, dance and music, and taste food from around the globe. Expo 2020 will also host summits, seminars, new product launches, networking opportunities and meetings, to name but a few. It will also bring investment that will stimulate new job opportunities, including for youth, and reinforce the UAE s image as a place where the world can meet safely and work together. Expo 2020 will use the global media spotlight and the experience of millions of visitors to show a different, modern, progressive side to the UAE s cultures and people. Beyond April 2021, Expo 2020 will leave a lasting legacy across four areas: physical, economic, social and reputational. More than 80 percent of Expo-built buildings and structures will find new life in District 2020 to educate and inspire future visitors and residents. Expo will also leave a lasting impact as an economic driver and by showing that the UAE is on a path towards an economy based on human potential and a welcoming dynamic hub for innovation, collaboration and aspiration. WHO IS EXPECTED TO VISIT EXPO 2020? Everyone is welcome: children, youth, men and women, and families, as well as countries, global companies, SMEs, NGOs and centres of learning. We plan for Expo 2020 to be the most international World Expo in history, with 70 percent of visitors arriving from outside the UAE. Dubai s strategic geographical location in the Middle East, between Africa and South Asia, and within eight hours flight of most countries, makes it a natural point of convergence for international visitors. 2
WHAT WILL VISITORS EXPERIENCE AT EXPO 2020? will offer a truly unforgettable experience for both visitors and participants alike. Across a 4.38 square kilometre site, including a 2 square kilometre gated area, the Expo experience will touch all five senses through a fun and meaningful events programme, food and art from all over the world and deliberately designed elements of the site. Visitors will learn, create, share ideas and have fun. Designed as a meeting place for participants, innovators and policymakers from around the world, the Expo 2020 site will embody our theme, Connecting Minds, Creating the Future. The heart of the Expo site will be Al Wasl Plaza (which means connection in Arabic. The vast space is designed to invite people to connect, converse and form new partnerships. WHO WILL PARTICIPATE IN EXPO 2020? will have more than 200 participants, including more than 180 nations, plus businesses, nongovernment organisations, and academic and civil society partners. In addition, we are searching for more than 30,000 volunteers in the UAE, from all nationalities and backgrounds. They will be the face of Expo 2020. Businesses from all over the world, especially SMEs, also are contributing to put on an exceptional Expo through our various initiatives to engage businesses and give them the chance to take advantage of a range of opportunities before, during and after Expo. WHO BENEFITS FROM PARTICIPATING IN EXPO 2020? World Expos are for everyone; the benefits are broader and deeper than first meets the eye. Expo 2020 aims to connect minds from all over the world to find solutions for global problems that affect communities anywhere in the world. As the first World Expo to take place in the MEASA region, it offers participants a unique opportunity to connect with some of the world s most dynamic markets, forging new partnerships and strengthening existing relationships. It is also the first World Expo to implement a one nation, one pavilion policy, which will allow each participating country to tell its unique story like it has never been told before. their achievements, their creativity, innovation, culture and aspirations, as well as promote trade foreign investment opportunities and to attract tourism. recognises that SMEs are key drivers of any economy and thus supports the full involvement of SMEs around the world in the delivery of an exceptional World Expo. SME integration helps to stimulate employment, strengthen industries, improve competitiveness and ultimately contribute to sustainable economic growth. We also aim to inspire and empower young people to participate in the journey to Expo 2020 and beyond, creating together the lasting legacy they will carry forward. Youth will make up many of the 30,000-plus volunteers who will be the face of Expo 2020. All volunteers will gain unparalleled benefits, such as new skills and the experience of a lifetime welcoming millions of people from all walks of life. Schools and universities are also benefitting from participating in Expo 2020 s various youth initiatives, including Youth Connect s school roadshows, Expo site visits, Expo Live s University Innovation Programme and a sustainability competition. University Innovation Programme and a sustainability competition. WHAT IS THE PROCESS OF PARTICIPATING IN AN EXPO? will extend invitations to participate to every nation. Expo 2020 organisers then work with participants to develop their individual pavilion design, theme selection, concept, content and events programme, guiding them throughout their journey to and during Expo 2020. Expo 2020 organisers issue all necessary guidelines relating to participation. WHAT IS SHOWCASED IN NATIONAL PAVILIONS? National pavilions are a core part of a World Expo. They offer nations the opportunity to tell their unique story and to engage with millions of people from around the world. They are a platform to exhibit a nation s achievements and progress towards their development goals, as well as its rich heritage, culture and other noteworthy characteristics. Each nation will work with Expo 2020 to choose the size and location of their pavilion, including in which Thematic District it will be located. 4
At Expo 2020, national pavilions will contain exhibition space, where participants can present a mix of both indoor and outdoor exhibits that create an inspiring and immersive experience for visitors, as well as space to host meetings and networking opportunities within their pavilion, with further options, of various sizes, around the Expo site. WHAT IS THE CREATIVE YOUTH PROGRAMME? The Creative Youth Programme is a competition for university students within selected countries to design the interior of their nation s pavilion for. The competition aims to foster youth ingenuity, reveal their true innovativeness and exhibit contemporary design. Each winning design will come to life as the respective country s pavilion during the six months of Expo 2020, alongside the pavilions of 180 other nations, and will be visited by millions of people from around the world. WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? The competition is open to all students studying at universities in selected participating countries in Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. Proposals can be submitted by an individual or a team. There is no limit on the number of submissions per university. WHO IS ORGANISING THE CREATIVE YOUTH PROGRAMME? The competition is coordinated by in partnership with participating countries national authorities. HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO ENTER? The competition is free to enter. WHAT IS THE COMPETITION PROCESS? The Creative Youth Programme"ill be launched in February 2018. Expo 2020 will consult with the national authorities of each country participating in the competition, and other relevant stakeholders, to facilitate conditions for success. National authorities, universities and participants will receive a toolkit detailing the design competition objectives, information about Expo 2020 s theme and subthemes, link to the Creative Youth Programme webpage, guidance on exhibition concept development, and additional supporting visual aids. The competition process will go as follows: 1. Student teams will have the opportunity to work with an appointed National Steering Committee, composed of experts from creative industries in their country. 5
2. On June 20 th, 2018 student teams will be prompted to submit the Thematic Statement that will be accompanied by their designs. a. The format for upload are outlined on page 9 of the Curatorial Brief Pack. 3. On October 20 th, 2018 student teams will send their complete proposals, including the Thematic Statement, the Design Solutions, and the Creative Expression, to their Commissioner General. 4. The Commissioner General will then select top three finalists, and send over their materials to the Expo 2020 organisers through our Participant Portal. 5. Expo 2020 will then allocate first, second, and third prizes to the top three finalists. Then watch the winning designs come to life before millions of people visit the pavilions during Expo 2020 WHAT ARE THE RULES? The competition is open to all university students in participating nations. Each participant can submit only one proposal. There is no limit on the number of submissions per university. Each team must appoint a leader who will coordinate the proposal, act as the contact person, and submit the proposal on behalf of the team. All submissions, including any additional information or materials, must be written in English. WHO ARE THE JUDGES? Proposals will be evaluated by a jury of professionals, supported by representatives from multiple relevant national stakeholders, technical and creative experts and Expo 2020 consultants. The judges will be selected by the organisers. 6
HOW WILL THE PROPOSALS BE EVALUATED? Submissions will be assessed according to the factors set out in the curatorial brief pack. This includes the relevance to the Expo 2020 theme; how well the proposal represents the respective country; creativity; and feasibility of the design. WHAT WOULD WARRANT DISQUALIFICATION? There are no disqualification parameters for the competition. WHAT IS THE AWARD FOR THE WINNING DESIGN(S)? The winning design will serve as the foundation of the respective country s Theme Statement, including the exhibition content, design and strategy. In addition, three finalists will receive prizes of USD 4,000 (first), USD 2,000 (second) and USD 1,000 (third). WHAT ARE THE OTHER BENEFITS OF PARTICIPATING IN THE COMPETITION? Students will gain national and international exposure, the opportunity to showcase their talents, learn new skills and add value to their CVs, as well as represent their country. Winners also will have access to regional and local entities in the fields of design, education, innovation and connectivity, helping to create lasting connections and opportunities.
